Jay— I had the same problem, and found that there was a piece of paper under the disc in the caddy. After I removed the small offending piece of paper, the Toshiba accepted the cadddy.
Scott– I'm in the PC world, and at this time the fastest single player CD-ROM drive is the Toshiba. However, that may change at this week's COMDEX. Eric

Walnut Creek was excellent to deal with. I asked them to FedEx the caddies to me, but due to a mess-up they didn't send my order out until a day later. So they adjusted their bill downward by $10, which is more then fair!

Dave— I have a 3401 that I am currently using with an Ultrastor 24F EISA SCSI controller. The two work well together. I also just purchased 10 caddies from Walnut Creek, and they were nice to deal with.

MSCDEX is generic and can be used with any drive. To use a CD-ROM drive with an Ultrastor or another SCSI controller, you need a device driver for the CD-ROM drive that must be loaded in CONFIG.SYS. This is no different from purchasing a CD-ROM drive with a proprietary controller.

I'd recommend an Ultrastor SCSI HA. I've been using one for a year, and its performance(and the company's support) is much better then Adaptec! They are also compatible with Adaptec's ASPI standard. Eric
I just saw a blurb on the new Toshiba's with some pricing. The internal version will list for $695 while the external version will list for $895. Ouch!!! Eric

Bob– You are correct: you do need a specific driver for the ASPI-to-MSCDEX to work, which Ultrastor has(along with the correct version of MSCDEX).
