DXF importing

>> I was wondering why it takes so long to load dxf files. A 10000 vertex model took about eight hours to load. Is there anyway I can speed this up, and will a faster computer help.

Lighting with 3DS
Message #134701
>> I would like some advice on light settings used by all of you, With 3DS3 I seem to regulary have the problem my lighting turns my images dark, difficult for printing and bad for video. So I wonder mostly which combinations seem to work best for most of you,…
>>I would like to find out additional info regarding Release 4 and EPS Support. Specifically, what is meant by "Outputs an EPS file as a raster result"? I am currently using Release 3, and have a potential client who needs output as EPS files, that would be compatible with tools…
If this is used as a texture map, don't forget that the Materials Editor default to a texture blur setting of 10. You probably would want to set that to 0 in this case. Terry Gilbert Forcade & Associates
Thanks, Sanford. I'll have to give them a call. I am looking for a spline editor to use with 3DS. Terry Gilbert
: I haven't tried that yet. Do you have feel for what it is :actually doing? Sounds like it may be taking the 256 color limit of 3DS and 'spreading' the :range. Sounds like an interesting idea. When Photoshop adjusts the levels of an image it is shifting the lighter…

#Colour Printing From 3DS
Message #127475
Don, It looks like you have received several suggestions such as Gamma, dot size and Renderprint software. Any of these may do the trick. You might also try an image adjustment in Photoshop to increase the dynamic range of the image. We have found that a lot of images rendered…
Who makes the Animation Master Sculpture module. Is this part of Playmation? Terry Gilbert
Also, lost clusters can accumulate on a disk. These take up space and can build to consume multimegabytes of space without actually being assigned to a file. Especially if your system has been crashing lately. Use the DOS command "chkdsk /f" to delete these lost clusters. Terry Gilbert
Have you tried using a Boolean subtract to trim the edge?
Ohhh…I get it now! Yes, that should work. Thanks.
Gary, That's a good idea. I don't think it will work in this case because there are other things going on while the fog fades out. The story takes place around sunrise and is completed about the time the fog is burned off.
#Animate Fog?
Message #63284
Does anyone have an idea on how to animate fog. I would like the fog to fade out over time. It looks like 3DS's atmospherics cannot be animated. I've tried at series of translucent planes but they show a line where they intersect the ground plane.
Steve, Simply using a transparent material with no shininess works at less "cost" than an opacity map. I was concerned about highlights showing up the way they did sometimes in 3DSv1.0, even on transparent objects. I guess the 2.0 renderer does a better job at that.
Thanks Jack. I'll give it a try. I thought for sure that I had seen a setting specifically for this case. Must have been a flashback from the sixties.
Invisible & casts shadow
Message #48221
Is there a method in 3DS to have an object be invisible but to cast a shadow? I know that I could give the object a transparent material but transparent objects are not invisible. I had thought that that was what Matte objects were but that is not the case.
Albert, Thanks for the info. That helps alot to understand PhotoCD and XA. I was planning to wait until year's end to get a CDROM drive and want to make sure that it has the capabilities I need.

J, That IS quite a large hammer! I hadn't even thought about using 3DS but it makes sense.

Stacker
Message #10109
I does wonders for a disk caching program like Hyperdisk, too. effectivly doubles the cache size. That effect may depend on who gets loaded first.
You can use the drive without software but DOS treats it as a nonremovable drive. To enable cartridge swapping, you need a driver that you can get from Syquest's BBS. You need to call Syquest at 415.226.4000 and tell them you need to get the driver. They will give you…
I am using SCSI for both my Maxtor 200MB driver and for the 44MB Syquest drive. It works great. I think that any drive that looks like a normal drive to DOS should work. The Syquest requires a driver to implement removable drives. Without the driver it looks like a…
Greg, One side benefit of Stacker is that it can increase the effective throughput of a slow drive. I use Syquest cartridges for extended storage space. They are fine but the accress time is around 25ms. Before Stacker I rarely loaded files off the syquest directly. Once I Stacked the…
Jay, This is the world of marketting not engineering. The 486SX only "did" something worth money until you bought the 487SX. After that it has no use and cannot be wasted. It no longer has any real value. As to why Intel brought out the 486SX, This allows Intel to…

clock speed doubler chip
Message #9379
If it is only the package, it shouldn't be a big deal to market an SX doubler and a DX doubler. In the most recent PCWorld they talk about two different versions but they imply that DX's will need a processor upgrade socket. I hope that the info I got…
