NewTek's New Product
Message #4084
To All, I just returned from visiting NewTek where I learned that NewTek will be announcing and demonstrating their long-awaited desktop video product that works on a mainstream computer platform. Because of non-disclosure agreements, I cannot divulge details. The product will be shown to the public for the first time…

Bruce, One area where the Cessna-to-Amiga analogy breaks down is when you consider the fact that there are lots of potential new computer options, but very few new Cessna (or small aircraft) options. Hope that changes soon on both accounts. Future Cessna Owner (I hope) Jim Plant

John, Glad you found what you needed. I understand the boys at NewTek are adding all kinds of process functions to TPaint (like Slo-Mo for FLyer clips, etc.) I can't wait for 4.0! Jim

John, I think I saw somebody in th LightWave newsgroup on Usenet talking about just such a program. If I can get my hands on it, I will transfer it to the DTV forum. Jim Plant Avid Media Group, Inc.
Mark, This is an "on-site" position at our Sunnyvale office. JP

Arthur, Thanks for the note. This is shaping up to be a great forum. Steve and John should be proud to see it coming together so quickly. I know I will spend a considerable amount of online time in this forum. JP
John, Maybe there's something to "the wisdom of our elders" and all that stuff… 🙂 JP
Dan, Thanks Dan. I'll look forward to hearing more about your "Flyer Tricks". Thank You for all your effort in making the Devcon a success. Let's do it again. Jim Plant
Tom, There will definitely be a VT Expo next year. This year's was a great success for Avid Media Group and the vendors who exhibited. We're trying to decide where and when we'll hold the next one. Dick Van Dyke is one heckuva nice guy. We got some great interview…
Hi from VTU & LWPRO
Message #322
Greetings to all, My name is Jim Plant, and I'm the editor of Video Toaster User Magazine. My company, Avid Media Group, Inc., also publishes LightWave PRO, the newsletter for LightWave 3D animators. We just recently produced the Video Toaster Expo '94 in Southern California. Congratulations to Steve and John…
December Issue VTU
Message #97108
Fred, Thanks for the tip. It's been a while since I spoke with Brent. I'll catch up with him again soon. JP
Since the November VTU was published, we've received additional clar- ification from NewTek on the Toaster System 4.0 upgrade. The list price will be $595 and it will come on CD ROM AND about 60 floppy disks (2 separate options). The CD ROM disk will have additional content (objects, surfaces,…
Charles, Thanks for the tip. I'll pass it on. JP
Several Flyers actually did ship last Friday to some dealers who were putting on shows. I understand some more will ship this week (about 10 or so) and a lot more next week. The dealers who got the Flyers were Heifner in Missouri and Armatos in New York. Jim Plant
Gary, Ok, I missed that little detail. That sounds about right. JP
Sean, I know, I know. When I met John Gross several years ago, he carried an average weight of about 150 pounds. Since he started editing LW PRO (an doing all the other things you mentioned) he's lost a lot of weight. Last time I saw him he weighed about…
The fax that NewTek sent out to dealers yesterday said that the first dealer units would ship on October 24th, and that it would probably take a couple of weeks to ship all the demo units to all the dealers who had ordered them. Jim Plant
Michael, You need to call Claude St. Germain (NewTek Sales/Dealer Manager) at 1-800-843-8934. NewTek faxed a dealer update on the Flyer and other matters today. Jim Plant Editor-Video Toaster User
Mike, Thanks for the kind words. "how to's" and tutorials is definitely the direction VTU is heading. We just had a long editorial meeting today to finalize 1995 editorial plans. Our goal is to have "at least" one tutorial on LightWave, CG, AND ToasterPaint in every issue. Add those three…
All subscriber copies go out the same day regardless of whether they are International or domestic. It just takes longer (and jumps through many weird hoops) when it crosses the border. JP
Brad, We just got our U.S. mail office copy today in Sunnyvale. You might want to give it another day. Jim
Brad, John Gross said he'd be happy to take 1 or 5 large groups on a tour to Amblin…as him, you'll see… 🙂 I don't know where you heard Pasadena. I don't think Pasadena was ever on our list. Maybe you're thinking of World of Commodore? Hawaii is going to…
Erik, Was that last part about "journalistic responsibility of certain large Toaster publications" meant for me? What do you think VTU's policy or action should be in a case like this? Jim Plant Video Toaster User
Brian, The Video Toaster Expo '94 will be held December 14th & 15th at the Universal City Hilton & Towers. See our ad in the October issue of VTU for details or call our main office at 1-800-322-2843 Jim Plant
Dan, Thanks for the update. I did receive the fax this week, and I'll be looking for the CD ROM next week. I'd be interested in seeing this article that you send to John. Can you fax me a copy to the same number you sent the press release? Also,…
Fred, Fax your request to Peter Tjeerdsma at NewTek at 913-228-8001 Jim Plant
S.G. Bailey, The Hawaii training is October 25-28 at the Outrigger Reef Hotel on Waikiki Beach. The trainers are Lee Stranahan, John Gross, Grant Boucher and Tony Stutterheim. Also, Allen Hastings will make a special appearance for a Q&A and demo session on the evening of the 27th. You should…
John, We've given the matter some thought at various times since we started sponsoring training. It probably won't happen in Hawaii. Maybe at the training sessions at the VT EXPO in LA. Jim Plant
Sean, These seminars are fundamentally different than the ones that Lee has taught for us, in that these are shorter classes focusing on specific subjects. This allows for more in-depth exploration of those subjects. The Hawaii seminar will be similar to the training we held at Siggraph. With Grant, Tony,…
Tom, Thanks for the kind words. I was disappointed in the Flyer article. It was supposed to continue in the back of the magazine. Notice how it kind of ends abruptly? There wasn't too much cut off, except my acknowledgment of James Hebert and Peter Tjeerdsma for their contributions to…
Pat, I'd sure like to know how yur co-worker got his copy of VTU last Wednesday. They weren't even off the press until Thursday! Subscriber copies were mailed on Friday. JP
I think Allen is planning on bringing his PC laptop to show some LightWave stuff on the PC. He's pretty much open to discuss anything people bring up. JP
Bruce, The September LWPRO shipped the last week of September. Give it a few more days before you call our office (1-800-322-2843). We ARE finally beginning to catch up on LW PRO. The October issue went out to the printer today! Jim
Dan, Thanks for re-sending the CDROM and info. I will look for it later this week. Fax press releases to NEW PRODUCTS, ATTN: Joan Burke (408-774-6783) Maybe we can get the info in the next issue of VTU. I'll pass your advertising inquiry on to Mark Holland, the West Coast…
Brad, FYI: Looks like Allen Hastings will be a last minute addition to the line-up of LightWave experts in Hawaii. We are adding on a special session for him on Thursday right after the last scheduled class. He will also participate in the end-of-seminar Q&A with the other trainers. Jim…
Daniel, Thanks for the info. Having you been sitting on a few A4000's? I haven't seen the FractalPro CD ROM. DO we have a copy at Avid Pubications? Thanks for the kind words about LightWave PRO. You many want to read the thread in the NewTek section of the Amiga…
Mike, According to Pleasance, Eggebrecht will not be returning. Some semi- conductor company built him his own lab in Colorado (made him an offer he couldn't refuse.) Jim Plant
That zero gravity stuff was pretty neat wasn't? Most folks probably aren't aware that Tim Jenison and Jason Linhart were invited by NASA to test-fly the FLYER in zero G conditions. Apparently, NASA hopes to use the Flyer on for video acquisition for whatever reason on the space shuttle. We…
Unfortunately, there are no useable tapes of any of the Siggraph seminars. Jim Plant Video Toaster User P.S. You can catch Grant Boucher, Tony Stutterheim, John Gross and maybe even Lee Stranahan at our next seminar program in Hawaii in late October.
#Flyer Questions Answered
Message #88225
I will be traveling to Topeka this weekend to do an article about using the Flyer (it will be published in the October issue of VTU.) What questions do you have regarding the Flyer? I will compile a list of questions from this forum and ask them at NewTek.
Grant, I spoke with the trustees today and learned that there never was a bid deadline of July 15th. That date was given by the trustees as the date they would meet to update the creditors (which happened on the 15th, as scheduled.) The trustee I spoke with said they…
#Bid Deadline Extended?
Message #156487
To All, I heard a rumor that the trustees extended the deadline for bids for Commodore's assets. Possibly due to Commodore-UK's late entry into the race with a potential management buyout offer. Anybody else hear anything about this? Jim Plant Video Toaster User
John, Please read my reply to Gary Kleiner. You will get the materials you were promised. JP
Gary, I have been on Lee's back about this for quite some time. He swears that the materials are almost finished. I will keep hounding him about this until I get some action. On behalf of Avid Publications, I apologize for the delay. You will get the materials you were…
I spoke to an official from the group that is the frontrunner to purchase Commodore's assets (sorry, can't disclose the name) and asked about the probability of new machines in the near future. This person confirmed that the new machines was an immediate and high priority. He went on to…
