Mike, I'm interested too… – Steve Ormonde
Gary, >> …things crash if too many rooms are loaded.
Tim, Do you have any power management TSR's? They have sometimes caused probelms. Has your system ever rendered this type of file w/o problems? If not,you may have some hardware conflicts. What type of mem mgr are you using? Have you tried reseating your memory SIMM'S? Just some ideas… -…
Hi David, PMFJI, but in a recent article in InfoWorld, MS FINALLY revealed their future plans for the Win95/NT connection. You're right in saying that 95 is simply a "bridge" to get us all to NT, but I was surprised to learn that they intend to keep developing 95 (96,…
#draped cloth suggestions
Message #194069
Any suggestions on how to make a realistic looking "draped cloth" over a table _without_ affecting the mapping coordinates? IOW, create a grid, map it then drape it… Thanks, – Steve Ormonde
#MLI printout
Message #193196
Any suggestions on how to print a given .MLI's contents? I've tried the "rdmli" program with no luck… – Steve Ormonde
#255 material limit
Message #191874
Are there any work arounds for the 255 material limit in 3DS, settings or otherwise??? – Steve Ormonde
Don, 720dpi is basically 720 pixels (or dots) per inch. If you want an image that is 3" square, render it at 3×720 by 3×720, or 2160×2160. – Steve Ormonde
#How's Exabyte system?
Message #190268
Alan, >> but since NT supports the Exabyte 8505 (and other SCSI backup devices) natively, you can easily restore all apps, configurations, and data.
>> copycat….
Daniel, type GO COMANIM and check the MPEG video section. There, you will find "CMPEG" for converting .TGA's into an .MPG and "VMPEG" that is a software .MPG playback program. – Steve Ormonde
>> The real truth is that there wasn't much sense in staying in high school after 1973 — the miniskirts went away…:-(
#F/T 3DS modeler/animator
Message #187895
It's growing time again! Ormonde Presentations is actively seeking a 3D Studio modeler/animator to add to our talented staff. The candidate should have architectural background and be proficient in the use of 3DS and IPAS routines. Compensation will be based on skills and experience. This is a full time position…
>> I just bought World Builder and will be trying it out in the coming days. I'll let everybody know what I think.
The CMPEG utility is located in the multimedia/video forum. In addition, there is a VMPEG utility for viewing MPEG files through software decoding. – Steve Ormonde
Daniel, It's actually a hardware/software combo called MARS. It's about $1500 and uses an RCPADI driver (I think) to save out to an .MPG file. Only catch is that each machine requires a complete MARS system, hardware and software. Alternately, you can render to .TGA's and use the DOS utilities…
>> Geez…. are you still flying through Model Homes???!!
Dennis, From what I heard at Siggraph, the DEC alpha is somewhere between 4 and 6 times faster than a P5-90 and costs about $16K. So, if this is true and assuming that Max will take advantage of it, it will become our standard workstation. (ie, one vote for DEC…
James, How much does it pay??? Long time, no type… looks like biz is good, tell Darren I said hello! – Steve Ormonde
Looking forward to it, Alex! Just let me know when to DL the flics… – Steve Ormonde
John, >> Most of the companies we provide 3DS for have a constantly needy job opening list. I really think some kind of roundtable concerning educational/training resources needs to be set up;
Alex, >> I just resolved spherical mapping case (most complicated one) for applying correct (STICKY, as Danny Mercurio suggeted to call it) texture mapping on the animated metaballs
>> I did not see any mention about compatibility with existing .3DS and.PRJ files.
>> Are you bringing your Guset to the party?
>> -Alan (almost retired hippie)
Kathy, Rumor has it that one license is good for the owner and a guset. True? – Steve Ormonde
Hey Paul! I haven't received mine either… do you know the specifics, like day, time and place? – Steve Ormonde
>> It will be Siggraph Monday afternoon (August 7th) in our office.
OK, OK, i'll go buy it! >> I really should stop by and say hi soon.
Thanks Martin! – Steve Ormonde
>> some idiot wrote a chapter on doing a similar thing in the NRP book "3d Studio Special Effects". Borrow (or even buy) a copy and all will be revealed .
You and Susan are hosting a party, ehh? What day, and should I bring a swim suit? Jet skis? Notebook w/ 3DS? – Steve Ormonde
#overlay shadows

Any suggestions on how to create an rendering with shadows that can be overlayed onto a scanned image accurately? – Steve Ormonde
Rob, We also have a Netware 3.12 network and use the server to store our mpas. We have never had a problem with file sharing… – Steve Ormonde
>> No, the NT for the SGI will not run 3DS R5 unfortunately….
Danny, Check the COMANIM forum and browse by MPEG. I believe there are a few shareware programs available. – Steve Ormonde
John, In addition to what you said about software taking advantage of multi-processors, I beleive that NT Workstation will only take advantage of 2 processors max, but NT Server will take advantage of as many as are on the system. – Steve Ormonde
Michael, Try setting the NET-TIMEOUT-CHECK in the 3DSNET.SET file to NO. Since your machines are taking a long time to render, it may be too long between "squawks". Also, type SYSTIME before putting your machines into slave mode. This will synchronize your newtare machines to the server. – Steve Ormonde
internal error
Message #177440
Hi Brian, What causes an "internal error" when loadint a series of TGA files int ani studio? I have 75mb of memory with 73% free system resources on a P5-90. – Steve Ormonde
Try 2 seperate scenes, one with just the violin lit and the other with the full room lit and do a slow cross fade between them. – Steve Ormonde
Tim, What chip set does the card have? (S3, CL, ET4000, …) The Vibrant driver has a native version of most chip sets. – Steve Ormonde
Jim, I use CMPEG to convert 3DS created TGA's (uncompressed at 352x240x.89) with good results. However, I haven't had any luck converting TGA's from Animator Studio. Call CeQuadrat at 415/715-5610. They have a Windows product called Pixelshrink that's supposed to convert FLC/FLI files to MPEG. Good luck. – Steve Ormonde
Jonas, >> As an aside, this alt-esc is documented in pg 29 of the User's Guide as the last sentence in the Netword Menu Functions/Slave section.
Just an update on the alt-esc vs. esc issue: After several days of in and out of slave mode on 6 systems, using alt-esc when launched from the command line to exit slave mode, our "machine x running" problem has gone away. In addition, if a system was accidentaly exited…
Hi Brian, >> Are their any IPAS routines or other External processes (i.e. .BAT files) in the project file? And are you Rendering from the Viewport or from Video Post?
James, See the reply from David. I'm gonna try using alt-esc and see if the problem goes away. – Steve Ormonde
>> but if you ran 3DS SLAVE from the command line, you need to press to return to the command line
Along the same line, I just noticed this morning that a machine with 128mb of RAM required 47mb of memory to render. Another machine (both P5-90's) with 32mb RAM used all 32mb (duh) plus a 37mb swap file wich totals 69mb!! Why would the machine swapping to disk use an…

Dean, From what I've heard, you can't edit an MPEG file like you can an AVI file. Perhaps the best method would be to create your video as an AVI, use Premier for wipes, etc. then use one of the shareware programs that convert AVI to MPEG… – Steve Ormonde
