Thanks for your reply. Sorry I wan't more clear, but I was asking if there was a way to switch off the dithering in Animator Pro when doing FLICS – COMPOSITE – CROSS-FADE. The result I'm getting looks jittery. Looks much smoother when using 3DS with dither turned off, but…

I tried doing a Fade In only of the second layer, and got the same result. The source flics absolutely do not have shifting brightness to begin with. The source flics have identical backgrounds. When fading it in over the top of the other, the background (and the rest) becomes…

Tried that. The change in brightness seems a little less doing it that way, but it's still there. The brightness change I'm talking about is very slight, but becomes quite apparent when viewing the animation in a loop.

Had a question about the transitions Fade In and Fade Out in Video Post. The Fade In and Fade Out transitions don't seem to be linear. I noticed this when trying to fade one FLC into another (which can create a looping animation when the fade lasts for the entire…

ok, one more question. When rendering from a batch file, is there a way to specify the viewport to use in the command line? Would be nice for those late evenings when I forget to have the camera viewport active when I save a PRJ file. Would be nice to…
#Keyframer Message #133461
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio November 4, 1994 1:41 PM
Okay I'll try that. In the past when I have tried to get someone started using 3DS, the biggest point of confusion has always been that the Camera view in the Keyframer and 3D Editor don't match (due to transforms, ratations, etc..). In my humble opinion there should be a…

Got your FAX a couple days ago. Two or three others are probably going to come along with me. I think I'll bring along a copy of the animation in question. See ya then, -Jeff B.

Got your FAX a couple days ago. 3 or 4 others have expressed interest as well. I think I'll bring along a copy of the animation in question and see if anyone has any bright ideas. See ya. -Jeff B.

The distance-from-camera test using a script sounds like the answer. I know very little about the scripting capability at this point. Can you deal with elements that closely? Can you find the distance of an element from the camera, and can you hide individual elements? I'll have to look into…
#Keyframer Message #132918
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio November 2, 1994 3:10 PM
Is there a way to delete elements in the Keyframer? Suppose you have a star-field object created with Scatter (one object–3000 elements) and you want to delete a few of the star elements that get too close to the camera's path as viewed from the Keyframer camera view (i.e. the…
#Network Rendering Message #132668
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio November 1, 1994 1:03 PM
The network rendering capability of 3DS is incredible, but I'm have a problem that I am having difficulty fixing. Here it is: Using four machines on the network. Two "bad" machines see the control files and try to get in on the rendering process as normal, and they always skip…
#131636 3DSR4 Fast Preview Message #132383
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio October 31, 1994 11:40 AM
Kevin, I really don't think that's the cause. I doubt the closest color to ALL my bright objects would be black! Anyway, I'll be awaiting your answer. FYI, all the objects in the scene are self-illuminated (galaxies and stuff)– there are no lights in the scene at all. Does the…

From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio October 26, 1994 12:17 PM
I had one other question as well. The supplemental manual includes "self illumination" as one of the material attributes which the color preview recognizes. The scene with the morphs also contains objects which are all self illuminated. When I go into the color previewer all I get is one beautiful…

Just installed R4 yesterday and tried out the color previewer in the Keyframer. Pretty neat thing, but I was wondering how do you get it to recognize morph keys? I use the morph track quite a bit and wanted to view a morphing shape in progress using the fast previewer.…
#3DS3 RENDERING Message #130409
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · IPAS Usage October 21, 1994 11:51 AM
Is there a way to render a Flic using the "Palette -> High" setting but have 3DS3 retain the temporary targa files ($FRAM000.TGA, etc..), in other words not-delete the targa files after converting them to an 8 bit flic? I realize you can render out targas instead of a flic,…
#128453 #Lens Flare IPAS Message #128569
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · IPAS Usage October 12, 1994 11:45 AM
Is there anything different about FLARE2 besides the banding fix? I'll pay my dealer a visit and have a peek at it. Anyway I hope someone's coming up with a better one. I don't mean to be such a winer–I'm along time dedicated user of 3DS but it's embarassing when…
#Lens Flare IPAS Message #128433
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Multimedia Forum · IPAS Usage October 11, 1994 7:55 PM
This is a bug-report/complaint/question about the Lens Flare IPAS from the Yost Group IPAS Boutique. I have found that by putting a Lens Flare in the VP list after a KFScene which contains very smooth opacity maps in the materials, it causes color banding in those materials in the rendered…
MIRROR REFLECTIONS Message #119281
Question about mirror reflections. I thought this might be related to the "MIRROR CLIP ANY" setting is 3DS.SET, but on or off makes no difference here. The scene: A compact disc stands on-edge on a reflective marble slab. The camera is at about 5 o'clock in relation to the disc…
#102367 3DS R3 with Windows Message #102562
I did the PHARLAP.386 thing. Got it working though. The new IPAS stuff is pretty neat. Have fun at the GRAPH. Won't make it till '95 myself being one of those right coasters…
#Animator Pro 1.3 Message #102303
I have a question about executing Animator Pro. Sometimes it takes a VERY long time load up. Seems to be related to how many network locations my machine is connected to, and maybe something to do with wheather or not I have an EMS manager loaded? I've seen it take…
#3DS R3 with Windows Message #102302
I hate using Windows (3.1, 3.11) but because programs like Quark and PhotoStyler work in Windows only, I am forced to use it. It would be nice to be able to pop into 3DS once in a while to do up a little logo or something without exiting Windows. I…
#92972 Compressing flics Message #92987
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk Animator March 23, 1994 12:01 PM
Yah, would be nice if it were an INK so you could apply it to selected areas only. You can sort-of do it full-frame by importing the flic into Video for Windows doing RLE or Video-1 compression on it. But that's painfully inconvenient and slow, esspecially to convert it back…
Compressing flics Message #92815
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk Animator March 22, 1994 12:49 PM
I was wondering, is there any way to "quantize" a flic? You know, compare each pixel in frame B with the coresponding pixel in frame A. If the color-difference is within a certain threshold, make the pixel in frame B a non-delta pixel–reducing the number deltas where the colors from…

#91119 #creating galaxies Message #91675
By the way, I have one more question. Is there a way to include VIDEO POSTing when doing BATCH command line rendering? I can't seem to figure out how. Would come in handy when a scene includes Lens Flare, etc… Thanks for the help, and thanks for providing remarkable software.…
#90652 #creating galaxies Message #91045
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio March 14, 1994 11:46 AM
Scaling the whole cloud wasnt' the answer, but I'm now pretty close to the effect I want using a detailed bitmap for close view, galaxy bit map for distant view, the RAIN IPAS for a volume of stars, pre-rendering each part, and putting it all together using Video Post about…
#90528 creating galaxies Message #90578
I considered scaling the particles up as the camera moves away, but how do you animate particle size over time using DISINTIGRATE or RAIN without scaling the whole object, just the paricles? Or is there a better way to make a big mass of particles? I'm trying to acheive an…
creating galaxies Message #90472
From: Jim Maxey Autodesk Software Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio March 10, 1994 11:28 PM
Using 3D Studio 3.0. Wondering if there's a way to create a volumous star field that can be viewed from near or far. I want to create a galaxy where the observer moves through it's heavy star field then moves upward and far away from the galaxy. Problem is that…
