Light on wall ??
Message #195046
Dear Tom, I've had similar problems before, and although I find this kind of sun effect can be tricky depending on the area you need to illuminate, I think I know where the areas to explore are. You should look at the spotlight's bias and map size. Also, notice if…
#CHEAP STACK DUMP
Message #188294
Well, With a 1 Gig drive I doubt this could be the problem, but I had the exact same error message a week or so ago. The problem turned out to be that the hard disk was completely full and the machine was trying to page. Maybe that's it. I…
I usually do this by creating a special opacity map in a paint program. I just select the background (usually this is easy if it is pure black or blue or something.) Then I make all these areas black (transparent in 3ds). I invert the selection set and make the…
Dear Jonas; Thank you for you help. Can you tell me how to order the IPAS4 DSK (and perhaps what it is)? I was also hoping to find out some other things like if I would need a C compiler or what. Anyway I apologize for my ignorance, and thank…
3DS on a laptop?
Message #178149
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experienced running 3DS on a laptop computer. Does the hardware lock just sort of hang out while you carry it around. I don't want to get one if it doesn't work, but it would be nice to grab and go from time…
#Writing IPAS
Message #178148
My company is interested in exploring the possibility of writing a few simple in-house IPAS routines. Could someone please point me to the starting place for following up on how to do this? I would greatly appreciate it. Matt Harrison
Truecolor Flics?
Message #176680
I was doing the video configuration for 3ds R4 again and I suddenly started wondering why there is the option to load multiple flic drivers for more than 256 colors in the vibcfg setup. I thought that flics were limited to 256 colors, so why the truecolor drivers? Thans in…
#Viewing animations
Message #175413
This may very well be a foolish question, but it here it goes. I would like to be able to view animations from 3ds at 30 frames per second. It seems like I would be able to do this if I could convert the animation to a mpeg file or…
I'd be interested in how you have connected all your rendering slaves up to a single keyboard and monitor. We've been trying to do something like that and all the switches we've seen so far seem pretty expensive.
Well, I guess I can't really explain your problem then. I still think it would be better to use a subdirectory instead of the root directory of your f: drive, but that really shouldn't be causing your problem. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know
I may have an idea on this. You say that You "redirected all [your] swap files to [your] g:\ drive which has 2+ gigs free." Well, I think that dos (I assume you are using dos) has a limitation that the root directory can have only a fixed number of…
Dear Brendan, What is the deal with this updated chip? We bought our par board in January or so. Do I need to get this upgrade? Also, could you remind me where you got this RP software for incorporating sound, please? Sincerely, Matt
Dear Martin, I'm sorry I missed most of this conversation, but it appears that you produce a very interesting product. I would be interested in more information; prices, ordering info, etc. Thanks, Matt
I'm not sure this is the same problem, but it sounds similar to a problem I had once. It sounds like you are making your flic with the high pallate button on in which case 3DS tries to make a targa file for each frame. It appears that this is…
I just checked, and yes it is mapped to C: But, why should that do it? -Matt
No, I don't use any network on this particular computer. I do use it in slave mode to render a batch of things from time to time, though. Would Lantastic do that? -Matt
#Garbage Files
Message #170796
I have been noticing that something is creating lots of garbage files on my computer. When I say "garbage files" I mean files in the root directory with names like alcfaddo or bbcmnnop with no extension and of zero size. I can only guess that somehow 3ds is creating them…
I'd be interested in subscribing to your magazine if you wouldn't mind taking a moment to give me an address or phone number at which I could contact distribution. Thank you, Matt Harrison
Viewing Numbered Targas
Message #169409
Our very small graphics company has one machine with a PAR card for outputting our renderings to video. However, other employees would like to be able to view their animations (numbered targa files) even without a par card. Is there any way of doing this? Maybe it won't be 30…
I'm new here, and I don't mean to be rude, but after reading the number of operating systems you use why don't you try loading up Linux and maybe even a mac emulator or two? insincerely, Matt
Well, if you're an experienced TS user and you are getting 3DS, then I expect you are the perfect person to give us your impressions of the pros and cons of the two programs. When your done evaluating 3DS I would appreciate your comparison of the two programs. -Matt

#trueSpace 2.0
Message #11753
I am new to this forum (and to Compuserve) but I would like to ask a question. You appear to be very familiar with 3DS, which is what I use for architectural modeling. Could you or anyone else give a reasonable comparison of 3DS verses TrueSpace? I would greatly appreciate…
