I have an Amiga 3000 with a SuperKickStart ROM, and would like to get a hold of a SuperKickstart 1.3 disk if possible. I read in the readme file that game with SoftBoot3.31 that there is such a disk, but it's hidden away on the dev conf on BIX. is there a way for a lowly user, such as myself, to get a hold of this disk? 🙂 i have not been able to get Relokick or any other util floating around various networks to successfully boot my 3000 with a 1.3 ROM file. 🙁 i suppose my machine will only be happy with a specific superkickstart 1.3 file. i do not know why commodore would want to prevent me from getting my hands on it, it's not like it is hot new trade secret…. 🙂

Bob, There is no 1.3 SuperKickstart that will work on a 3000. One of the reasons for the development of the 2.0x Kickstart was to _add_ the needed hardware support for the 3000, which is not in 1.3. The implication of this is that 1.3 will not work on a 3000 — it doesn't know about the 3000's hardware system. Hope this helps…. – BobR (Motorola Inside!)

hmmm…. in the readme file for softboot331.lha, it mentions a 1.3 superkickstart disk and how to use that to write a kickstart file so that softboot can kick under 1.3. maybe i misunderstood something in the docs, so i'll send it to you via email. is it at all possible to get 3000 to run 1.3?? if so, how? 🙂 bob

Bob, I have run 1.3 on my 3000. It's one of the older machines that Kickstart from the harddrive. The way it's set up, there's a separate partition for 1.3 and 2.x. At cold boot time, you hold down both mouse buttons to get a menu which lets you pick where you boot from. It's been a long time since I messed with it, but I remember having some trouble setting up the 1.3 side with later versions of 2.x. But there is a 3000 SuperKickstart disk, they just stopped shipping it around 2.04…

I've tried using that kickstart menu, but since i do not have a 1.3 kickstart disks i can only kick with my 2.04 disk (which i had to do once when my hd went belly up). according to the documents for SoftBoot, a util which let's you by-pass the menu in a way, the 1.3 kickstart disk is locked away on BIX in the developers section for registered developers only (like it's a trade secret ) problem is, i doubt i'm a registered developer. 🙂 i have the 2.04 includes, and autodocs disks that i ordered from C= while i was taking classes in C programming. i dunno if this qualifies me, though even if it does not i'd still like to get a hold of that disk some how…. bob

I got some time ago from CU Amiga (one of the several british mags) a disk with Relokick1.3 in it. When the .DMS file is expanded to a floppy, you can boot from it and get the famous WB 1.3 screen in an A3000 like mine. Its intended use is for non-friendly 2.04 games and works pretty well. Nevertheless, Populous doesn't work. 8-( I've been trying to find some understandable docs in it concerning description and distribution rights, but the only text file is written in an unknown and ununderstandable language for me. I am spanish, I speak english and french and I am living in Germany for almost a year and I will have to speak german as well in the near future, but that language must be hungarian or romanian or… who knows!!

Sorry Bob, I cannot answer to that. I do not know what revision my motherboard is, but I have 37,175 roms and a factory installed HiD drive. Purchased in Spain, July '92. Maybe I can help next time.

Bob, Hmmmmm, I don't think you are right. If I hold down both mouse buttons on my 3000 I get a kickstart menu that allows me to choose either kickstart 1.3 or 2.x and to load from either floppy or HD. I also have a superkickstart disk that has both 1.3 and 2.x. Maybe you were thinking of the 4000? Nahhhh. My 3000 does not have the kickstart rom. Maybe 1.3 will not take advantage of all of the 3000's hdwe. features but it does work. I got rid of the useless 1.3 partition soon after I got the 3000 but can still boot 1.3 if I really need it. Mark, Yes – I had a brain lapse there. The version of 1.3 that shipped with the _early_ 3000's was a special version made just for the 3000 ('cause the "release" 1.3 didn't know about the 3000's hardware requirements). As far as I know, this "special" 1.3 image was only available on the early 3000's. As soon as 2.04 was finalized, 3000's started shipping with 2.04 in ROM, and the 1.3 compatibility was felt by C= to be a moot issue, as the 1.3 capability was there only because earlier revs of 2.0x were slightly buggy. Thanks for the correction. – BobR

I always seem to have the early (read "unfinished") version of whatever machine I buy. The 3000 has been very stable although the superkickstart setup probably boots slower than one with a 2.04 rom. I did like the flexibility of booting from disk. What I don't understand is how that other guy did not have the superkick disk when he had the superkick 3000!? Maybe he bought it used and incomplete.

The trick to avoiding that syndrome is to buy *behind* the leading edge. RIght now is a great time to buy 4000 040s, or 486s, for that matter. 🙂

There is REALLY no way to win. If you buy early it will be too expensive and not yet finished. If you buy later it will be much cheaper but will soon be obsolete. I have made both of these mistakes. Goin' AP …..Mark Sterling

Did someone ever tell you that computers were a good investment? :-=)
#39893From: Mark SterlingMar 4, 1994 8:01 PM
Nope, nobody really has tried to convince me that computers are good investments. I'd like to have them try. Hasn't ever stopped me from buying them. Counting at home and at my business I currently have 13 computers. Only one of those is not in use. Anybody want a Texas Instruments 990 series BS674 with 2 44meg HDs, 1meg of ram, nine serial ports, two printer ports, 1 dual 8" floppy and one 1/4" tape drive. Was $25,000, $450 or best offer. P^) P^) I ran my business with it for almost eight years. Goin' AP …..Mark Sterling

The 3000 has been very stable although the superkickstart well, that's what you get when you buy the first one off the assembly line. 🙂 > What I don't understand is how that other guy did not have the >superkick disk when he had the superkick 3000!? i do not know if your refer to me or not, but i *have* a 2.04 superkickstart disk. i would also like to have a 1.3 superkickstart disk. i got my 3000 in spring 92, and it only came with a 2.04 disk since 2.04 was pretty much the standard by that time (or so it seemed). bob

I hadn't booted 1.3 in so long I had to test it to be sure that both 1.3 and 2.04 were on the superkick disk. Yep, I have it. Man, 1.3 looks ugly!!! Sure, send me your address and I'll send a disk. It can't really be any harm to C= as I see it. If I played old games or something I would probably use it more often. Goin' AP …..Mark Sterling

after i read your message, i decided to try seeing if 1.3 kickstart was on my disk labeled "A3000 Kickstart Version 2.04". i shut the system off, turned it on, held both mouse buttons on, when the kickstart menu appeared, i clicked 1.3 floppy and put the disk in. dang, it worked! 🙂 the wb1.3 picture appeared and i put in my AmigaVision boot disk in and my 3000 was happily running amigados 1.3! i tried running Harpoon (the only 1.3 game i could think of that i had and never could get to work under 2.x) from the ram drive, but my amiga guru'd after it popped up the error saying something about waiting for all disk activity to stop. i'll try running it from floppies in the morning. the only other problem i had was that i couldn't get softboot to load the kickstart1.3 i created on the hd from the kickstart disk. i'll try reading over softboot's readme again tomorrow. so you can scratch the mail i sent you. 🙂 bob

Bob, I was gone most of the week and haven't sent that disk yet although I did get your E-mail. OK, I'll forget it. I guess your kickstart disk was mis-labelled. I haven't used softboot so I can't help you on that one. Good luck with Harpoon. Goin' AP …..Mark Sterling

Ummmm……no SuperKickstart for 3000's? Then why did my 3000 come set up with 2 seperate boot partitions, one for 1.3 and the other for 2.04? And why if you press down both mouse buttons at boot up it gives you the option of booting into 1.3 or 2.x? You must be thinking about the 4000 Bob.

Yep – I had a "brain fault". I've since retracted/clarified. Mea culpa….
