#No Amiga Monitors

I don't mean to overstate this and further hurt the C= market, but the lack of a decent monitor for the Amiga 4000 is not a trivial matter. I'd been putting off buying the Amiga 4000 until the 1942 monitor became available again… after March 15 by all announcements. Prior to this time, alternate monitors were available, but at triple or more of the 1942's price. Yesterday, I made some phone calls to the mail- order Amiga dealers (since none are within driving range) and I was frankly alarmed by the responses: SafeHarbor: (one of the more reliable mail-order houses in my experience) "We have absolutely no Amiga 4000 compatible monitors in stock, but are hoping to have something soon." ComputAbility: ("One of Wisconsin's Top 10 Women owned Businesses"…I'd love to hear Rush Limbaugh comment on that one….) "Sure! Any old SVGA monitor will work with the Amiga 4000." (My understanding is that this is an incredibly huge falsehood.) Creative Computers: "Nope! No compatible monitors here." Let me get this straight… C= is trying to sell Amigas, except that you really can't buy a monitor for your new Amiga, so you'll just have to use it as a 2 and 1/2 grand door stop until one arrives. I sure hope CD32 is selling, because C= is certainly not generating any money with Amigas! I've seen the ads in AmigaWorld for a new 4000 compatible monitor, but no one seems to be stocking it yet. It sounds promising, but until it's on the shelves, its no more helpful than all of those wonderful, but non-existent Opalvision modules which have been advertised for a couple of years now. Excuse my negative tone, but I'm getting a tad worried. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Computability will say whatever it takes to sell you IBM compat products… if you haven't noticed, they are phasing support for the Amiga. I realize that many people balk at refurbished units, but several companies offer refurbished multisync/scan type monitors. (With a much better surface viewing area than the 1942) As I understand it… SVGA monitors will work quite well on the A4000, you just can't read your GURU messages! <g>

Steven, Here is the latest I have on the monitor situation. I talked to several of my distributors (I am an Amiga dealer too) and they have not gotten any word from Commodore as to the confirmation of their monitor orders. Normally about 3 days prior to shipment everyone who purchased monitors are contacted. This hasn't happened as of last Thursday. The distributors are quite furious. A letter from one distributor went to Medhi Ali saying that if Commodore did not provide the needed monitors that they will not pay for the A4000s that they had recently purchased. I have tried to contact John DiLullo over this last week on this issue as well as the 20 questions promise. No word yet. Hang in there.. I could have an update on the situation in the next day or so.

Perhaps the few people there are so busy that they haven't had time to return my call. I am not exactly high priority with them I am sure. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

TJ >>Some list Ron […] How did you do that?<< A local BBS, which has an Internet feed, collects some of the newsgroups for the Amiga. Lists for Amiga monitors, and other devices & software are posted periodically. I collect them, and as needed — I post them elsewhere. Ron. – ap'ing with AP. Hi Ron, RR >> Make sure you have a Commodore 23-to-15 pin adaptor for connecting the monitor to the Amiga's Video port. 🙂 Thanks Ron, I have the adapter… finding a VGA "multisync" that syncs on the horizontal down to 15 kHz isn't as easy, tho. All the newer models on display in two stores don't provide that. Also, I need the VGA display for my GoldenGate emulator. – Dave
#137555From: Ronald B. RomineMar 30, 1994 9:14 PM
DH >>finding a VGA "multisync" that syncs on the horizontal down to 15 kHz isn't as easy, tho.<< True. While I have a list of multisyncs that work, I haven't gotten a multisync yet. Currently, I'm making do with a VGA-only monitor & the PPREFS promotion program. The monitor is monochrome, but it syncs to Double-NTSC, Double-PAL, MultiScan, and Euro72 without problems, and has a nice flatscreen. I need a new TV, and I was think of spending the money on a cable ready color TV instead of the new monitor. I would hook the A1200 to VGA most of the time, then hook the TV upto the Composite jack when I wanted to play a 15-kHz only game. Ron. – ap'ing with AP. #137459From: David HammMar 29, 1994 11:31 PM
Hi Leslie, >>I called Creative Computers last night and they told me they have 1942 monitors in stock. NOrmally I wouldn't have a problem with this statement, but as it is, I have a problem with it at the moment… _I_ called Creative back in January for a 1942 monitor… When Creative didn't ship for a few weeks, I asked them about the CTX monitor. (This was back on 2/17/94…) At that time, <Jim> told me that the CTX was due in that day and (Creative) should be able to ship to me by the next day…. So I waited… Figured <Jim> didn't reserve a CTX for me, and called back again a few weeks later. At that time, Creative told me that they didn't know when they expected the CTX in… I called Creative again yesterday to check on my CTX order status, and now they tell me they expect the CTX in this week. I asked why they thought that, and the reply was "because it's written down here…" O.K., so I'm a patient type of guy and take that with a grain of salt. So, Im sticking with my CTX order. I've bought my A2000 & A4000 cpu's from them, and they _almost always_ provide the most excellent service. If I had another dependable source for a decent multisync monitor, I would have bought it weeks ago. Thanks, – Dave

I was looking at that CTX monitor too. A couple weeks ago Creative told me it was in stock too. I hope your monitor arrives soon. If you don't mind, could you leave a little review on the CTX? Thanks!
#137694From: Dale LarsonApr 1, 1994 10:00 AM
I bought a CTX 17" monitor for my PC. It cost less than half the Sony SE17 I had on trial ($, and it performs at least half as well, so I guess it is a good deal. 😉 My impression of CTX is that it is cheap stuff, but not horrible. Depends on what you are using it for and what your budget is. If I sat in front of the PC all day, I'd have spent twice as much money for a better monitor, but since I don't, I didn't. — Dale L. Used and refurbished — yes. New and affordable — no. There are some $1k+ "multimedia" monitors that should be great on an Amiga, but I really don't know any details other than that they exist. — Dale L. Larson, Intangible Assets Manufacturing — INTERNET:dale@iam.com

While looking for the ad in the April issue, on page 82 ("Help Key" by Tim Walsh) I also noticed that Andreas R. Sheriff was having a problem with the Mitsubishi Diamond Scan multisync off his A1200 (AGA)…. Along the lines of moving vertical lines… Tim suggested a work-around (for WB 3.0) with a program called "MONED". So, now I'm curious to see if it's online here. Also, (unfortunately), it also gives me second thoughts about the Diamond Scan monitor. I suppose it pays to read ALL of the magazine, especially if you're looking for a solution. Thanks, – Dave

HK >>Do i understand things right if say every monitor in the list is fully Amiga-compatible and will display every resolution of the Amiga.<< I personally haven't checked out the monitors on the list. They will need the 23-to-15 pin adaptor needed to connect the monitors to the Amiga's Video port. All of the monitors should display both the Hi-sync (~31-kHz) & the Lo-sync (~15-kHz) of the Amiga. A few like the IDEK MF-50xx, I know support the mid-sync (~24-kHz), although all might support the mid-sync. The only mode the monitors will not display is the A2024 mode, which requires a "multi-panel" monitor. Ron. – ap'ing with AP. (Eagles may fly, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines.)
#137061From: Dale LarsonMar 26, 1994 5:57 AM
There is no such thing as a "multi-panel" monitor. Well, maybe the A2024 itself could be described as one since it has the video card internal to the monitor rather than in the video slot, but that's a little like calling my auto a "stereo-car" because it happens to contain a radio. — Dale L. DL >>There is no such thing as a "multi-panel" monitor. To my understanding, the A2024 is a "Viking MonoTerm" monitor, correct? Is there a classification that can be given to this type of monitor, with its built-in card and display system?
