#Hold frame on PAR
12 messages in this thread
Anyone know if it is possible to hold the first frame of an animation
when playing on the par. I want to hold the first and last frames of
my animation for a second or two. Any way to tell the PAR to do this?
Also, I rendered 2 animations, put them into the same project directory on the
PAR drive. Went to join them and it won't let me. What gives. The animations
were from the same XXX.prj file in 3DS. Does that make a difference? Come to
think of it I also tried to join 2 different animations (from 2 different
3DS/PRJ files)

<<Anyone know if it is possible to hold the first frame of an

drive the first frame and it becomes say: test000.ani … you then
make sure your blue line on the PAR software is on that file
line..click on duplicate, then to frames, choose loops 30 (for 1
second) you do the same for the last frame and there you have a one
second pause at beginning and end..

Come to think of it I also tried to join 2 different animations (from 2
different 3DS/PRJ files)>> My suggestion is to rename the second file and try
again, being in same project directory is fine, I've joined up to six different
3DS/PRj files and no problem.. Also make sure you do backups of individual .ANI
files before joining in case of problem ..
Paul,
As soon as you click on which animation you want to run, the first frame
appears. You can hold on that frame as long as you want, and the same for the
tail. Am I missing something here?
As for the projects files, I'm not sure what you mean. You can combine any two
animations once they've been rendered to the PAR. If you render seperate
sequences with different names then you'll have to join them in the PAR, but if
they are different sequences with the same name and are rendered concurrently,
that will work also.

Dumb question on the holding of frames, guess I should have played around a
little more. Only had to turn off the repeat button to get it to hold on the
last frame.
Joining animations still doesn't work. I have 3 animations in the project on
the PAR. I click on the first one then on join. The only one that shows up as a
choice to join is the file I have highlighted, nothing else.
Here's another one:
I have a logo which has both horizontal and vertical lines on it that are white
on a blue surrounding. When I render it the vertical lines are narrower than
the horizontal even though they are modeled at the same width. Is this a result
of the higher vertical line res. of the PAR?
Paul
Paul,
When you highlight the one you want to join and click on "join", a menu should
come up. Then click on the animation you want to join to the animation in the
menu. Its a little confusing until you do it once and then its clear. I trust
you have the latest upgrade of the software. There was a bug in the shipped
version but that should have been updated by now.
>> the vertical lines are narrower than the horizontal <<
I've encountered this with certain types of monitors. I haven't seen this
effect with my current monitor, but I've experienced this on SVGA monitors in
programs like AutoCAD doing "plines", and with the Targa on a long persistence
monitor. What type of monitor are you using?

It is not as dramatic on my Sony 1440. But on a 9" Sony trinitron portable is
really clses in. Don't know if that is because of size or not.
Paul
Paul,
I think it is part and parcel of the monitor design. I've put several
animations to Beta Sp and while I can't say I've specifically looked for the
problems you've noticed, I can say that the output does not look distorted with
regard to line widths. I'd see if you couldn't compare the output on another
monitor. FWIW

The effect was not as noticable on my Sony 1440 and also the diamond shape of
the logo doesn't look distorted. So maybe it is a lighting problem (side
lighting casting a shadow on the lines – which are not really lines but boolean
holes cut in the logo diamond.
Thanks for the input. I suspected the PAR first and it still may be
contributing to the problem, but now I will look to some other possible
culprits.

One little idea which you have probably already thought of….but I
make quick preview tapes for my clients with the PAR by using a PAR
ANI of my compnay logo. The tape begins with a 5-0 countdown, then
logo flies in…then their frames….then I simply return to the last
frame of my logo and leave it up for 15 seconds while my VTR is still
recording. One thing I always do at the beginning of the tape is flip
the EE (i think) switch to get the green screen. That clears my
recording and I never seen any fuzz.
John,
You're right about clicking the .ani file and it displaying the first frame for
as long as you like.
However, I would like to see some user variables allowed here. In the above
example, you will find it very difficult to have a specific "time" for the
head…..that is, can you have the first frame display for exactly 150 frames
before starting to play the .ani sequence, then hold a tail for exactly 150
frames?
What I would find *VERY* helpful is the ability to key in the number
of frames for heads and tails when preparing to playback the .ani
sequence. Top this off with the ability to automatically have the
whole playback sequence begin and end with "black" signal. This sure
would make it efficient to lay PAR animations to tape for
post-production…..every animation sequence with a specific "style"
for heads/tails, etc.
The exact "head" time on an animation sequence is especially important if there
is a corresponding matte animation that will be used in post production. Both
the color and the matte version must match each other regarding "head" frames
before the animation begins moving. Otherwise post production will have a
difficult time matching the corresponding color and matte frames.
Uh, who's taking wishlist items for PAR software version 2.0 <G>!!

>> What I would find *VERY* helpful is the ability to key in the number of

I agree there are several features in the interface that I would like
to see included, and that is one of them. As far as "black" frame go
I just add my own, but I agree it would be nice. Actually it would be
nice to be able to create a script file to do all these things.
>> Both the color and the matte versions must match each other regarding "head"

Well yes, but as an ex-editor I can tell you its not that hard to match them
up. Spin the dial and lock it in. (Yes you will get editors bitch about it but
that's there lot in life. <g>) I'm not sure what you mean by color though…
You set up your animation to bars, and the matte is white with a reverse key,
either way you have to do this and its not affected by head and tail length.
>> Uh, who's talking wishlist items for PAR software version 2.0 <G> <<
Well I for one hope you get your wish. 🙂
I'd really like to be able to create a script. FWIW

>>editors bitch about it<<
No, kidding!!
Yup, I'd go for some sort of playback scripting from PAR!
