Steve, You must set the PostScript driver (from Window's Control Panel) paper source to MIXED BINS to be able to have more than one bin selected in a single print job. (Don't tell anyone, this is one of the best-kept secrets in a long time.) – Dick Minnick [Ford],74417,51 @ 11-May-1995, 00:05:30 EST [Troy, MI]

Dick You kindly replied to a similar question of mine in adifferent trhead regarding a similar problem I was haveing with a LJ4M+ at a clients site. I tried the mixed bin but so far no luck and then spoke to HP ESC who pointed out the bug in the 2.1.1 driver. They are tearing out their hair because they have a LJ4M wich works fine using the drivers supplied with that. I am going today to try and see if those (possibly older) drivers would work with the 4M+ or whether using non-postscript would keep them going. They are a new Radio station going live 10th June so they are mailing like mad 🙂 Is there any way I can get the beta test driver from adobe to try out as if it works it would be great, if it doesn't it wouldn't hurt and as the site manages to break everything I put in there 🙂 it would be a good test. Perhaps you could point me at someone who I could contact about this. Regards Nigel

Nigel, I really can't understand why so many folks are having trouble with the bin selection. It really does work with the 2.1.1 drivers. Some people have found that they have the 500-sheet accessory for the original 4/4M which will not work with the Plus models–this has nothing at all to do with the drivers. You should be able to use the PSCRIPT.DRV based driver originally released for the LJ 4M with the 4M Plus. But you should apply the Microsoft v. 3.58 update to work with Word (the 4M shipped with v. 3.53, I believe). This driver does not use the Level 2 features in either printer, nor will it support unique 4M+ features (such as duplex). I have found some minor difficulties with some applications when using the "old" driver with the new printer, but they are generally not show-stoppers. – Dick Minnick [Ford],74417,51 @ 12-May-1995, 22:26:15 EST [Troy, MI]

Dick, I've been eavesdropping on some of these threads about the bin problems because I also appear to be experiencing problems with bin selection. When I switch the driver (2.1.2) in Windows to mixed bins then attempt to print a Word document that is set to Lower on first page and Lower on other pages, I get the first page printed from the upper bin and subsequent pages printed from the lower bin. If I change the driver to Lower only, it works fine. Shouldn't the application override the driver setting? I upgraded away from the MS drivers because I have had a problem with users that has different versions of the MS PostScript driver (mixture of 3.53, 3.57, 3.58) not being able to share Excel spreadsheets. The user that created the sheet worked fine, the user trying to read the E-Mail sheet would get "Cannot Open Printer Driver" when they tried to Print or Print Preview the spreadsheet. I had to keep some of these people at differetn levels because we also have a QMS magicolor that didn't like the 3.58 driver. Any insights would be appreciated.

Robin, >> Shouldn't the application override the driver setting? << I think we all would agree that this does not happen with Word and the 2.1.x driver. I would also agree that it should, but I don't know enough about the internal PostScript coding to be able to place the "bug blame" on the offending piece of the puzzle. My suspicion is that the PostScript language is weak in the bin selection area (for many years PS printers only had one bin and the first dual-mode dual-bin printers could not use the second bin at all in PS mode). I haven't found the 2.1.2 driver too restricting. If, for example, one has different sized paper in the various bins, then "auto select" is the proper setting. And, if there are different types of paper of the same size, then "mixed bins" seems to work OK. At least until I read your note <g>. What happens if you specify only a single bin (for *all* pages) in Word while the driver is set to mixed bins? I had thought that this works correctly and I shall test it tomorrow……….. – Dick Minnick [Ford],74417,51 @ 15-May-1995, 22:43:45 EST [Troy, MI]

< What happens if you specify only a single bin (for *all* pages) in Word while the driver is set to mixed bins? I had thought that this works correctly and I shall test it > I tried that with 2.1.2 and 2.1.1. I get the first page from the upper bin and the rest from the lower bin. If I specify lower only in the driver and mixed in Word, I get all upper. BTW, I use the lower bin for white and the upper bin for letterhead. I LOCK the UC from selection via the printer CONFIG menu. < I think we all would agree that this does not happen with Word and the 2.1.x driver.> I didn't have any problems with Word using the 3.53 or 3.57 or 3.58 MS PS drivers as far as bin selection. I think I had the problem with the 3.5 version, but I have difficulty remembering that far back. The Word Page setup overrode the Windows driver setup. I'd stay with the MS drivers, but I'm having that damn problem with Excel and the QMS magicolor, which the 2.1.x drivers seem to fix for me. I can probably live for now with users being forced into changing the settings in the printer driver as well as page setup in Word, but it seems like instructions from the Department of Redundancy Department.
