#Nautilus Problem!
10 messages in this thread
Have just got my first NAUTILUS disk. Having problems. Cannot get any audio
from music portions (or any other parts) of the disk. Get message about
"MCIWAVE" driver… and so on.
Am running a 386 with Windows 3.1. Notice in the SUSTEMS.INI file that the
MCIWAVE, MIDIMAP and MINSOUND drivers are listed there. Nothing happens
however. Where should the sound come from? The small speaker that gives me
the computer "beeps" etc.
As this first disk seems to contain so much sound – which I cannot get, I
feel somewhat fed up. Perhaps I made the wrong coice in a Nautilus
subscription?
Can anyone help?
HILARY.
Hilary,
Do you have a sound card? The only method I know of to get wave sound from
the pc speaker is by using the driver available from the Microsoft Download
library called speak.exe. This is a self expanding file so place it in its
own directory. Once its expanded you can install it by using the drivers
applet in Control Panel. It is limited to .wav file types and you can use
this until you get a sound card installed. To really enjoy Nautilus and
Multimedia Applications you need to get a sound card that uses external
speakers or headphones. It should be MPC compatible.
If you have a sound card, do you have it connected to headphones or
external speakers? Do you have the drivers set up for use with your card?
Don't get frustrated yet, the experts will get to you.

Thanks for the reply Paul. Up-to-date news…… As I was pulling our 386
apart to put in another 4 Meg. of SIMM's, also a new faster video card, I
broke down and bought a SoundBlaster Pro' card. Installing all the stuff
was easy. However, had problems with their software. Written no doubt by
Gen. Kadafi in revenge for us being nasty to him. Eventually, with the help
of a Norton program, seemed to get it going….. at least some sort of
Islamic music (Kadafi again!) came out of my speakers when i tried their
test procedure.
Am only up and running for about an hour…. so will be tackling the
Nautilus again, if indeed smoke does not appear before then.
Have put you on my EXPERT list. Regards, Hilary.
SECOND REPORT (Some troubles!)
Paul. Managed to play the Bach Tocata from current Nautilus disk – using
the "xxxxx.wav" type file. When I tried the other files it gave me: "Unable
to open the file CDAUDIO. Open MMfile: MCI error 266. Undetectable problem
in loading the specified device driver"……. What gives and how do I
correct?
In trying to load a video file I get "256 color VGA mode not available"
Does this mean not available in the Nautilus program, or not available in
my Windows 3.1. I have the latter set at VGA 640 X 480 256 colors. I need
this for other programs,
So far the only thing I can get going in the Nautilus is the Text, Still
PIX, and some of the audio.
Any advice ??? Thanks. Hilary.
Hilary,
Ok, you're getting wave files to play. Now, to get the .mid (midi file
types) to play through the Sound Blaster, you'll have to make sure the midi
device drivers are installed in Windows (Control Panel, Drivers applet).
Make sure the interrupts and IRQs are set to what you set your card at.
Once this is done, go to the Midi Mapper applet and select SBP All FM (this
is what I had to use to get the midi to work). Now try the midi file type
on the Nautilus disc using Media Player, if you don't get any error
messages and you get sound you should be set for midi. If this doesn't seem
to work, we'll have to make sure a file in the windows system directory,
midmap.cfg is the correct one for the SB Pro.
In the Nautilus Application, the very first page should have a pushbutton
for 256 color, make sure this is selected. I think 256 color is required to
use the video file types. You can also test the .avi file types using the
Media Player provided you have installed the Video for Windows extensions
from the Nautilus disc. You need to do this anyway to see the videos from
Nautilus. I'm sure if I've left out something, the real experts here will
pitch in. Let me know how it goes. I blush, because no one's ever called me
an expert. Thanks. Paul
Thanks so much Paul for your efforts. I will now try and do what you
advise. Since my last note have come to the conclusion that there is some
problem with the "interrupts". On my 386 setup, I note that IRQ7 is
allocated to "printer". Although I loaded the SoundBlaster card with IRQ7
(Default), it loaded OK. It aslo works to a limited extent. However, from
time to time I get that dratted "Memory Parity Error" message.
I will open computer, pull the SB. card and alter to IRQ5 – which is free
as far as I can see. Will then alter line in Autoexec.bat to read I5 (not
I7). Last will alter the line in the Windows system.ini file to read int=5
(presently int=7).
After all that…. will boot up and – looking to the Eastern sky…. pray
quite heavily!
PS. So far Paul, you are the EXPERT… me the NOVICE!
Regards…….. Hilary.
Hilary,
You can use a Microsoft program called MSD.exe to snoop around the IRQ's
and addresses just to make sure there are no conflicts.

Hilary:
In addition to all the other things to do. The reason you got a
CD-Audio error is the MCI driver is not set up. This is not part of the SB
drivers, it comes with windows.
Go into the Windows Control Panel, Drivers section. You should
have several MCI drivers listed. (If not select ADD and then choose each of
them from the list and add it. You may need your original disks)
Make sure there is a CD in the drive that contains Redbook audio
(the Nautilus disk is fine) Select the MCI CD-Audio driver, then choose the
Setup button. You should get a dialog that says the drive was detected and
everything is okey dokey.

Hilary,
If you have an audio card, you need to separately install the Windows
3.1 audio drivers that came with your installation software. If you don't
have any Windows 3.1 drivers, you'll have to get them.
For the SoundBlaster Pro, there are three necessary drivers: MIDI
Synthesizer, Auxiliary Sound, and Pro Wave and MIDI Audio. You install
these by going into the Windows Main Group, Control Panel, Drivers, and
selecting "Unlisted or Updated Driver," etc. You also have to make a Midi
Mapper selection. In my case, Nautilus .wav and .mid files wouldn't play
until I selected "SBPro All FM," rather than "SBPro Basic FM" from the MIDI
Mapper.

It's also important to note with the SoundBlaster that the drivers must
be installed in a certain ORDER. Install the AUX driver FIRST, then the
WAVE and MIDI, then the MIDI, in that order.
