I have to make a choice between a Yam 4x or a Kodak522 2x. All things being equal ( disregarding the price difference ) would you go for the Yam or the Kodak. I am particularly interested in support / reliability issues. thanks, Gav

In big issue is system configuration. With the Yamaha you will need a system that can feed the data at 4X in to a 640K buffer. With the Kodak you start with a 2MB buffer can expand to 32MB. So price is not just recorder price. The Kodak 225 is an update of a 3.5 year ago design, the kink have been worked out. The Yamaha has been shipping about a year now. We were seeing a higher failure rate with the Yamaha, but the newer one are doing much better. The biggest factor is the usage you want from it. The Yamaha writes discs faster. If that's what you need the Yamaha is the answer.

I agree that the price includes everything you might get stuck buying with the recorder. ie you have just bought a nice new p90 system with a 1gig IDE drive and with the PCD 225, CDD 522 or Plasmon RF 4102 you don't need to add a new HD but with the CDR 100 you will be stuck buying a new HD that you may or may not need. In other words, will one be able to write a 650 meg image from the 1 gig to the CD100 if they are on the same Adaptec controller? Kevin C

Kevin, We have used only one card on most of our machines for some time now but they are all AV drives connected to our CDR 100's. Also the slowest machine connected to a CDR 100 is a P75 and we still don't have an easy time with burning on the fly. I have yet to find a good program that takes advantage of system memory. You would think on a system just burning a disc (with 32MB of memory) would be able to augment to the lame 512k buffer in the 100. Cheers, georges

The only reason to buy a Yamaha 4X recorder over the Kodak or Philips (or Pinnacle Micro, etc.) 2X is if writing a disc in 15 minutes is worthwhile. The Kodak (an OEM Philips) writes just fine in 30 minutes (plus or minus three minutes) a complpetely full disc.
