Darrin – I've moved your library text file called HELP-UP.TXT over to the message section as it isn't really a long term library file. More members will probably help you here than from a library file. Hope you get what you need. *Technical Support Needed* I am a registered 3DS R3 user. Recently, I have had an opportunity to experiment with the Video Post function. I have followed the "Galactic Ripple" tutorial line by line, and have gone through it 3 times from scratch with the same results: When rendering, it goes as far as frame 0 where it goes to encode the 256-color image and then generates the message: "Cannot create temporary file: C:\3ds3\temp\$FLIW1$.TMP" I have made sure that I have ample disk space and that the c:\3ds3\temp directory exists. I have completely erased and reloaded the 3DS software and have achieved the same results. I am running 3DS R3.0a on a Toshiba 4800CT laptop computer with DOS 6.21 and 16Mb of RAM. I can render flics without video post and they render fine. In fact, I even reset the system, created a 20 frame file with only a camera. I then went to video post, put "stars.ixp" in the first entry, used the "KF Scene" in the second entry and got the same results. If I take out "stars.ixp" it seems to render without this error, making me think the problem might be with the "stars.ixp" entry. PLEASE- What am I doing wrong?

Darrin (via Anne), >> "Cannot create temporary file: C:\3ds3\temp\$FLIW1$.TMP" << I believe this is a disk space problem. If you choose high or medium pallette the disk space required will be far more than the size of the final flic. The best choice is "custom" pallette. If you have animator pro render maybe 3 sample frames, or even 1 and get a suitable pallette from these that will cover all the colours you need. Use the pallette or a single image (a gif or flic) as the "custom" pallette in 3ds. Other things that can make flics huge are dither-256 and having colourful environments that you fly around. Use subtle or no camera moves and cut to other POV's instead of flythroughs to keep flics small.

Martin, Thanks for your suggestion. I too thought it might be a disk problem but have noticed that, first of all, I am using the Galactic Ripple tutorial which uses a 320×200 flic on low pallette. In addition, it fails while encoding the 256-color image after rendering the first frame. If I reduce the number of frames from 300 to 10 and render, I get the same result. I've never had this problem before (without using Video Post), so I'm at a loss to explain it. FYI- I have 150mb of free disk space left- surely, enough space for a 320×200, 256-color, 10 frame flic. I'm really frustrated because my local A-desk dealer knows less about 3DS than I do (not very much). I had hoped A-desk would see this message and take ownership of this situation and help me, especially in light of the price I originally paid for the product. Any more advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Darrin, >> I have 150mb of free disk space left- surely, enough space for a 320×200, 256-color, 10 frame flic. << sounds like it should be enough. It's probably a config problem, it's definetly not 3ds "source code". Can you render .gif's or .tga's? You'll need to tell people a lot more about your system and configuration. Where is 3ds installed (drive and directory)? Tell us what happens when you type "cfig386 3ds.exe" in the 3ds directory. You should get a bunch of parameters. Give us a complete breakdown of your hardware and config.sys and autoexec.bat.

Martin- Thanks for helping me with this! >> It's probably a config problem, it's definetly not 3ds "source code".<< I hope so. I REALLY hope it's something stupidly simple. . . >>Can you render .gif's or .tga's? Yes. If you see nothing obvious with what I've provided, I can upload the complete files of both. Thanks again! -D

Darrin, thanks for posting your config. Unfortunately, everything looks kosha so I've no idea what else could be the problem. Maybe the Adesk sysops or forum asisstants have an idea. Martin

I got it! FINALLY! I stuck FILES=40 in my config .sys on a lark and it worked! Didn't mess with how small I could make it though (FILES=20 or whatever). Since DOS defaults FILES to 8 unless you specify otherwise, we must need more than 8! Perhaps Video Post is opening more files?!? Even if there is only ONE entry in the Queue?!? Thanks for your interest in trying to help me. I *DO* appreciate it! -D

Darrin, >> FILES=40 in my config .sys << great! I never thought of that – I'll have to remember it.

I too can see nothing wrong. Two shots in the dark – try remming out the share line, and are you sure that there is a subdirectory under 3ds called temp <g>? LAM

Thanks for your input. I found the problem (look in a reply to Martin). Thanks again for your input. -D

Anne, Is there any way I can get an A-desk rep who is profficient with the product to help me with this? My local rep knows less about the product than I. I suspect the nature of this problem will require someone with more intimate knowledge of the source code. Thanks! -D

Darrin – Please post specifics of your 3DS problem here to the forum and someone will help you. As the administrative sysop I dont' have the technical expertise to help you but someone will. Just give full details. Anne
