Where was this thread when I went for broke and bought IPAS package N0.#1 a month back! Sheesh!

What do you mean? (none of those IPAS routines are included with R3) – G

I haven't the foggiest idea what you are talking about. This message either was not intended for me or something got majorly screwed up in the database as I never said such a thing, for one I do not know anything about R3 to be able to make such a statement. Merlin

Yes, Gamma radiation, it has happened a few times, I even get E-Mail addressed to me that makes absoloutly no sense to me whatsover, obviously intended for someone else. Merlin G. Farmer

Just a thought Merlin, But how close to Green Bay Wisconsin are you and are you interested in the Sanyo GVR-S950? James M. Murphy
#61013From: merlin farmerOct 9, 1993 11:12 PM
Not too far from Wisconsin actually, and the Sanyo was on my list of VTRs to check out for purchase, however, I ended up with a SVO9600, due to more circumstance than anything. I got cought in the middle of the SONY (none in stock) syndrome as I was trying to buy during the last two weeks of September and Sony as well as a few independents were claiming to be out of stock so they could hold out for an extra 10% on Oct 1. Rat-ta-tat-ta-tat. I tried to close the deal several times only to find out at the last miniute none was in stock. Two of the dealers are here on the forum. I ended up closing the deal with a non forum dealer. I think I may have made a mistake as It still took TWO almost THREE weeks for my stuff to get here and all of it STILL isn't here, EEEERrrrrrrrrr! Can you beleive it, they sent the bloody deck but not the blasted RS-422. KABOOM! Well, it looks pretty, and I think it blackstrips tape okay, but I'll be damned if I know if it works or not, I will be on the phone Monday raising hell. Not real happy right now. I should have waited and purchased from one of the forum dealers. If things end up real screwed up and I have to send this beasty back I may talk with you about a Sanyo, but I doubt the situation gets must worse, Unsless I blow it up trying to install the RS-422……….. Merlin, >>> I should have waited and purchased from one of the forum dealers.<<< Can we emblazen that on your forehead next SIGGRAPH gettogether? <BG> The one thing I know for sure as a dealer on this forum…50 AD-DA-Boys still don't wipe out 1 Oh-Sh__! and that's for sure! <G> Therefore Dealer Forum Buys tend to be the safest. I also don't want you or anyone else on the forum to misunderstand what I am about to say next….as it certainly will be seen as "self serving" and I guess I can live with that. However…..I have followed the threads on the Hi8 verses the SVHS decks for over a year and my impression was that those that used the Hi8 decks used them primarily for VIDEO aquisition NOT Animation! I seem to recall several threads where those using the Hi8 units for animation ended up with a LOT of Drop-outs Etc…. Call me crazy but SVHS still seems like a better way to go than Hi8 FOR ANIMATION. I know I'm gonna hear about this, Soooo.. if you look back during the course of the past year on this forum I'm sure that the truth will bear me out. AnyONE care to comment on this, please do. This is all about everyone getting the best possible entry level setup not is BetaSP better than SVHS. So before you tell me you just stepped out of your Porsche and now discovered that your Lexus is "unresponsive" consider this is "Best Entry Level" were talking about. Thank You. James M. Murphy

>>Call me crazy but SVHS still seems like a better way to go than Hi8 FOR ANIMATION.<< Couldn't agree more. I've seen several animation tapes made on Hi-8, and the dropout is really bad in spots. I believe the deck that Merlin purchased is an SVO-9600. This is S-VHS (I've got one, too. Quite an excellent deck). Regards, John Tissavary (La Luna cie)

Tony, >>> I am not a HI8 user but have heard from those who use HI8 that once they changed to HI-quality tape all their drop-out were eliminated.<<< Uh….I don't think a higher grade of tape is gonna help all that much…you better check you facts on this one Tony…I'd hate to see somebody be dissapointed because the took this as gospel. >I'd hate to see somebody be dissapointed because the took this as >gospel. I didn't intend to be stating `The Ultimate Truth' :^), just making a suggestion from what I have heard from HI8 users.

Hello James, as a Hi-8 user I gotta agree. Drop-out is a problem even with the most expensive tape I can buy. If there is anyone out there who would like to disagree I'd be glad to hear from them, but my experience has been at best there is more than I would like to see. I do use it for Animation but primarily as a test device. Once my work has tested out O.K. I go to laser. Most of my work is broadcast or broadcast quality and it is a fairly inexpensive way to test, but now that the Sanyo is out and the DPS system, I don't see a good reason to go Hi-8. There are other applications where my Hi-8 works fine, but if your serious about even final industrial application output, I would go with the Sanyo or better. The DPS is really slick too. -JE

>Drop-out is a problem even with the most expensive tape I can buy. I have heard people with HI8 either gets great results after getting High-quality tape and others that continue to have drop-outs as yourself. I wish I knew the answer. <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>

Hi Anthony, my experience is that if you're doing acquisition (not frame by frame) there is very little if any drop-out. Its the grueling demands of frame by frame that produce the problem. I may be pickier than some as I am accustom to results like 1" and Beta SP and Laser Disk, but from a professional standpoint the level of drop-out is unacceptable. I can't put one 10 second animation to tape without a least one hit. And don't even think of re-recording over the same spot. I can usually get away with dropping a frame in. I think it is safe to say it is a great test medium and very attratively priced, or was until the DPS system came out and the Sanyo for that matter. I hoped for more but at $3500 it was a good bargain. And all the low end recorders have some drawbacks, even the AG-7750. If you want professional results ya gotta buy a professional deck. With one caveat, and that is to get an Exabyte and the ASDG Abacus driver. Then you can get professional results because your final output is recorded to a professional deck. -JE P.S. If you know of someone who is particulary happy with a certain tape, I'd be glad to hear from you and give it a try.

The DPS PAR has been out for a while only for the Amiga. The PC version should be out by christmas.

Anthony – I'm not sure whether the DPS has been officially released or not. And we all can use more toys 🙂 -JE

I am not a HI8 user but have heard from those who use HI8 that once they changed to HI-quality tape all their drop-out were eliminated. I agree. I've used Hi-8 (EVO-9650) for quite a bit of animation, all on Pro-level 60-minute Hi-8 tapes, and I've experienced NO dropouts. I think it makes a difference if you don't re-record over the same area of the tape, and that you use the right tape. I've read plenty of comments over the last year about Hi-8 and many opinions and observations by several people who didn't appear to be using/have used the format for animation work. Most seems to be word of mouth, non-published specs, etc. (watch this, now I'll have 15 drop-outs on my next animation! that'd be my luck! <g>)

James, I was in the market for HI-8 until I followed threads here for a few months. I have a HI-8Camcorder and aquisition is tremedous. But even just recording to tape with the camcorder I have experienced problems. I went with SVHS (SVO9600) thanks to the good info available here, However, I STILL haven't got to use it yet because I'm dealing with an airhead, or con artist or idiot or something, The jerk didnt send the right cables and he sent me the SVO9600 without the RS-422 and Time Code Generator. After he said it was all in stock, PLUS he sent me a used TARGA+ with antique drivers. Now I consider myself a peaceful man, BUT I COULD'VE BOUGHT A HOG WITH THAT $5800 BUCKS! And I am afraid that the guy is very close to borderlining as a thief in my book. He has 72 hours to cough it up. Not only has he jacked with my $5800 bucks (that I am paying interest on) but he is real close to burning me on a $2000 animation project, which ain't nothin compared to what that project will lead to, IF I EVER GET IT ON TAPE. rrroooOOOOAAAAARRRrrrrrrr Merlin G. Oral, Problem is solved. Whew, I thought the bloody nightmare was never gonna get over. I am getting a good discount on the used Targa board, or I can send it back and get a new one. I think I am gonna gofer the discount after I test the digitizing capability of the board. As for the joker who sold me this stuff, well it wasn't all him, UPS screwed up too as well as his home office in another city. It was just a big goof all the way around. And then of course there was Sony. Anyway, It's all here and working like a Swiss Watch. As for giving the guy 72 hours, I did not need to, he had the rest of the order at my doorstep the next morning at 9:30 a.m. Now that's service! I just had to pull my hair out to get it thats all.
