If anyone needs a good edit controller for a cuts only system, the latest rev of the Nucleus Personal Editor just came out, and I highly recommend it. The newest version arrived Friday. My son's freshman football game started at 10 yesterday, and by 4PM I had dubbed the tape to SVHS, made an EDL complete with effects, CG, gaphics and A/X roll, and watched it run both decks and the Toaster to make the Coach's Cut video (just plays, no cheerleaders, etc.) that I donate. The thing works very well. If anyone is considering purchasing it, please e-mail me with any questions and I'll try to help. Please note that I don't work for Nucleus, I'm just impressed enough with the product to post this. Regards, Nate Wahl

GE, The number for Nucleus is 905-859-5218, and the FAX is 905-859-5206. Remember it's a two-deck only system at this time, but it probably integrates the Amiga/Toaster into your system better than most else out there, and you can't beat the price. A/X roll, CG support, SFR, etc. Regards, Nate.

I'll second that review of the Nucleus Personal Editor. I've been using it since it was just a single frame controller, and they've really done a great job. For the price I don't think you can beat it. BTW, I haven't received an update since I got 1.03A at the end of July. Is that the version you received, Nate ?

Keep a look out in the mail, I hear there is a major upgrade notice being sent out for both the Nucleus Personal Editor and the Single Frame Controller. Joe Maulucci >>> Accadia Electronic Arts AMIGA DTV & DTP BBS 1-716-882-1774

Joe- Do you have any info as to whether Nucleus is going to do a Flyer version of the Personal Editor? Sounds like that would be a natural! (and reasonable, I'm sure) Mike

Joe, Yes, Terry said the new 1.04 version will be out very soon. Quite nice work, many new features. Grabbing four full frames at a pass will save a lot of wear and tear on many decks out there. Regards, Nate.

James, I just had the pleasure of putting together most of a rapid-paced six minute sales tape this weekend with a test version 1.03j, and 1.04 will be shipping probably this week. It's pretty robust, too; 35 hours of editing, painting, rendering, taping, matching video clips to the audio master in a three day period, and only locked up once. You will be pleasantly suprised! Full CG support (keys, pages, scroll and crawl now), two clicks of the RMB toggles you between the Editor and the Toaster, full CMX lists, and a lot more. How about grabbing a full FOUR FRAMES AT A PASS? New deck controls where supported, like one frame advance and psuedo-24fps playrate (I have no idea how they do it on my AG7750, but it would be great for people going to film), full use of DV3, many new Multi commands (change certain parameters for all hilited clips). Pull downs on the Editor screens for typical functions plus global deselection. There's the ability to set individual times for a series of stills shift-selected in the file requester, or set a total time for them to take. Quite an upgrade! Hope this helps, it'll be worth the wait. Regards, Nate.

Thanks for the info on the new version of Personal Editor. I just got it the other day. Very nice. However, I've been having some troubles grabbing frames off my AG-7750 using anything other than 1-field, non-multigrab. I get either some flickering frames or totally black frames interspersed with the good frames. I've been talking to Terry, and he hadn't heard of it, but they're working on it. Have you tried the framegrabbing yet ? All previous versions worked for me, but not this one.

James, The problem you'r having seems a bit familiar, but it was fixed in 1.04. First, make sure that you don't have 1.03j from the about screen. Did you make sure and delete (or rename) your old config files in the S: directory? You have to do this every time you reinstall a new version. There are four of them, and are something like pe.7750.config, all ending in the .config extension. The config files may have held old data that isn't correct for the newer revision. Also run the test to check timing. I invariably have to use 8 rather than the default 6 for the EP Delay value. Also, I see you're grabbing from the 7750. The new version allows you to grab from the source. Is this your source deck? I use a 7650 as the source, and have absolutely fabulous grabs with this version. If you're using your editor to grab, it may be a timing thing. If you have it timed to the system as an editor, you need to be feeding it 400ns delayed external sync to match the delay through the Toaster, or just use normal sync which ties it to the deck input from the Toaster. The problem is it'll be timed to the Toaster output, and what it sends back to the Toaster will be delayed 400ns. You can feed it the same external sync as your Toaster gets to input 1, and disconnect it's input. That should make the timing work as an input. Does this make sense? If none of this helps, get all of the info from the pull-down menu on the Edit screen, and call Terry back. Let me know how it works out. Regards, Nate.

Thanks, Nate. As it turns out there seems to be a problem with the 1.04 code which seems to be related to the PPS '040 accelerator I'm using. Terry is revising the code this week. I've got a temporary fix (changing the SyncField parameter for the source deck). I figured it was related to 1.04 since I've been able to grab successfully with all previous versions. Now it works fine, and the new multi-frame grabs are fantastic. Terry says they now recommend the Toaster as the framegrabber of choice since their new grabbing code works so well. I'm thrilled because I can now grab sequences from my AG-7750 which, when laid back to tape, don't exhibit the random jitter which used to occur. And the quality is superb. I can also grab clean frames from my UVW-1800 with frame accuracy, which I couldn't do before. I had been eyeing a PAR just to be able to grab frame sequences, but I don't think so now. Phew, that was close !

James, Glad that worked out so well. Yup, the grabbing is great! I too considered a PAR, but with what I can do here using the grabbing and SFR capabilities makes beating up the decks worthwhile. Besides, I had a technician in to look at the 7750 the other day, and he didn't even need to clean the heads (after >20K frames laid, to boot). Adding a little sparkle effect to previously laid video when the framestores are gone is a very simple process indeed. Running on twos, threes and even fours for tests is great. Have you tried out the 24fps playback rate yet? I'll never do film with this, (I know, never say never) but just the concept of running the deck at that rate is pretty cool. Does the 1800 respond to the advance one frame command (< and >, I think)? I'm thinking of upgrading to BetaSP when this current project is complete, and I'm just wondering how the newer decks compare to the older ones. The cost is sure better. Anyway, really glad you got the bug fixed. Regards, Nate.
