I have a Gateway 486/66. I was running 3ds quite happily on this computer with 16 megs of ram. I decided I needed a little more ram, so I added another 8 megs. After I did this my machine continued to register only 16 megs at the boot up. I called Gateway and they directed me disable bios shadowing. I did and my machine obediently showed all my ram. However, with the shadowing disabled, I started having problems in 3ds. Whenever I changed screen resolutions (like going into the materials editor) the screen would flash and roll for about ten seconds before locking into the new resolution. I enabled shadowing and this problem goes away. I called Gateway support and asked for help. They had me try a few things, none of which helped, and then told me that it was a conflict between the bios and 3ds. At first they said 3ds must not allow you to use more than 16 megs of ram, and of course I explained to them how wrong they were. They said the conflict was happening in the F000 area, and said that I should ask you guys if you know any work around. Frankly, it seems like it's a bug with THEIR system, but if you could give me your thoughts on the matter, I'd appereciate it.

If you have QEMM, you can have it shadow the bios while allowing the machine to see the ram (I have the same system). If you don't have Qemm… get it! (Let me know if you do have it and I'll help you set it up, or someone else with the same setup can buzz in and help you out)

Ditto the other David's suggestion of using either QEMM or something like RAMBIOS.SYS that probably came with the drivers for your video card (ATI Graphics Ultra Pro?). I have a Gateway 4DX2-66V — but I will tell you that I have a considerable sync-up time when I switch video modes (esp to and from the mat-ed), and I'm using QEMM. I never really noticed if it exhibited this before I'd disabled the hardware shadow. Generally, this is just a function of the video card and monitor. I've learned to live with it, though I really miss my NEC 4D (I'm using a 17" Idek right now) — the 4D had digital memory and always seemed to sync up really fast. Dave

When I switch between the 3d editor and mat editor my monitor (nec) takes about 3 seconds to change modes, but since the mat-editor is running on an ATI and the rest of 3DS runs on a Herc Chrome, I figure it's pretty normal. I never considered it a problem, and with r3's rendering available from the mat-editor, there's alot less switching around compared to r2!
