#IPAS/REL.3

Which, if any, of the original ipas routines will work with 3ds rel.3? are
there any known problems?
Thanks… -Rob
All of the Yost Group IPAS routines for r2 work with r3, but there are a couple
of gotchas. Here they are:
1) Silicon Garden requires a patch (available on the Schreiber
Instruments BBS).
2) The ixp's in Disk#1 (glow, hilite, etc.) only work in 24-bit
color space, and you won't get the color resolution that r3's
64-bit color provides. I'll have updates for that disk early
next year.
Other developers who wrote IPAS routines with the Watcom compiler could
possibly run into problems with routines that worked in r2 due to Phar Lap
changes and the Watcom maxmem function. Our ipasfix.exe program (that ships
with r3) should fix most of them, but you'd theoretically be able to create
problems that would require more than ipasfix.exe to fix.

Thanks alot. How can I find the the number for the BBS? Can you help? -R
It's 303/759/3598. Once you're on, look for the Yost section and the SG11.ZIP
file.

Thanks again. Happy Holidays!

The Scriebner BBS is:
Happy Canyon BBS 303-759-3598
14400 or lower.

Question for Yost Group RE: IPAS #1 and 3DS R3. I have a client who wants to
"Blur" an image/object w/Alpha channel that will be composited over another
image in Video Post part of 3DSR3.
Is it possible to blur the foreground image without blurring the background
image, and if so, how?
Hi Mike,
The Blur Filter is used like any other IXP in Video Post; it is added to the
image queue. Blur only affects queue items above it, so placement in the queue
can be very important for alpha-channel control.
On page 11 of the #1 Image Processing IPAS manual you will find a description
of how to contrain the filter by the alpha channel.

Pardon for jumping in, but… Is there a new IPAS to work with rel 3?, without
fixes, etc..?
Thanks
Fernando
I'm not sure what you mean, Fernando. All of our IPAS routines that worked
with R2 also work with R3. The only issues are that ixp's built for R2 won't
be network-aware or gamma/64-bit capable. But they'll work with R3 exactly as
they worked with R2.

Gary I beg to differ with you on this.
With Hilite and Lens Flare IXP's a gradient background will be 24 bit true
color gradient in release 2. When the same IXP's are used with the same
gradient in Release 3 the gradient becomes banded and the graphics become
pixelated like a poor 256 color dithering. Remove the IPX and release 3 yields
its normal superb quality color. I just finished a sizeable job and I
definitly had to go back to release 2 to get the IXP's to work in true color
even though I had to give up the release 3 antialiasing superior performance.
In addition, I tried to use a gradient background rendered to a TGA and then
turn on 24 bit dither in release 3. It removed the banding but still had that
pixelated look. So it was a nostalgic return to Release 2.01a for me. BTW:
The client was ecstatic over the results. I did a thing like that Render Club
animation where the company's logo upwells out of the ocean, complete with
sunrise and animated clouds and ocean fog. Release 2 is still a very good and
capable product!
Oops. I forgot about that. You're absolutely correct. An IXP written for R2
will quantize the colors in R3 because it's doing color calculations in a
completely different color space than R3's 16-bit-per-channel image buffers.
If you're doing hilite, flare or glow operations, it's probably best to stick
with R2 until we can get the R3-compatible IXP's written. (Tom Hudson moved
in October and November, and has been making his new house livable (major
remodelling job), so he hasn't had a chance to get the new ixp's done yet. I'm
hoping that after this week he can get them done in January.)

G,
"it's probably best to stick with R2 until we can get the R3-
compatible IXP's written."
I have version 3 and just purchased the IPAS Disk Set #1. It seems I did not
purchase the R3 version. Will I get a free upgrade when it is ready?
Thanks in advance.
Malcolm
The R3-enhanced IXP's for Disk#1 will be ready within a month or so and I'll be
posting a msg here when they are. For people who bought the package directly
from the Schreiber folks (ie, they're on the database), a free electronic
upgrade will be available by CIS. For folks who bought the packages retail
(ie, no record/database to check), they'll have to send their original disk
back to Schreiber for the update, along with a minor handling fee.
– G
Gary:
That sounds like a major disadvantage to all those who bought through your
authorized dealers! Can't buyers have the option of going through their dealer
to get the upgrade? The serial numbers are recorded by Schreiber when the
dealers purchased them, so it should be easy to track.
I realize that some dealers may not want to hassle with a free upgrade, but for
those of us who do provide full service, we would like to make our client's
lives easier!

Uh… Greg….I'll do their free upgrades for Em'..<BG>
Murph'
You're right. Given how busy I already am with R4, I should just ask everyone
to upgrade via mail through Schreiber, and dispense with the electronic free
upgrade completely.

_OR_ send the disk to their dealer, who can upgrade a bunch at once…
Greg Pyros
Gary,
Ditto! .. what Greg just said. Please do not setup systems which make it a
disadvantage for customers to buy from us who are doing a good job with the
products!
How about this. Allow the dealers to verify that the customers actually bought
the products from them and we can forward these names to Schrieber as needed.
Then the customer will have access to the BBS just as any other.
Happy New Year!
