JRCOMM settings

David,
BTW, what are good settings to use in JRcomm 1.01 for CIS?
It was interesting to use Skypix with a full screen editor (FSE) on
a local BBS.

Gayle,
I usually recommend using 8N1 settings, but I don't use JRComm. It's
possible that Jack would recommend different settings for his program.

David,
Well, switching TERM types sometimes seems to produce a change to
another keymay so I am experimenting carefully (well, somewhat carefully!).
BTW, what is guru meditation number 00000004.00046270? I got it when
trying to load Pen Pal into the WorkBench when I had other stuff going. I
suspect it is due to lack of memory since Pen Pal requires 1 Meg if I
remember correctly. (I have only 1 Meg in the Amiga 2000HD.) Oh well, we
were able to get my wife's paper typed in with little grief whatsoever!
And my wife is strictly a user! Pen Pal does well with a novice yet is
powerful enough for other stuff, too, apparently.
Yep! I'm definitely having fun!
Sincerely,

PS. I get funny [m[H[m[J[37;44m[K stuff around the menu titles. (Maybe if
I tried an IBM emulation next time.) (Maybe I should read the manual.
Nah! It's too much fun to do at least some experimenting!)
Gayle,
The "garbage" you are seeing around the menu titles are terminal codes,
most likely from a VT100 or ANSI/IBM-PC mode. I just love all of the modes
that people use that cannot be read on all montiors or systems (those codes
are real interesting on a Model 100 (or even a Mac or Amiga sometimes).
Hoof a moose excellent day!
RAD Moose [via Navigator]
"'o.o'"
RAD,
I figured that they were some kind of Infernal Blue Machine
conspiracy. Eventually, I'll find something to filter them out.
With moos regards!

If your terminal program is in VT100 emulation mode then you have the
benefit of highlighting on screen, etc. If you ever get connected to
Usenet you'll really appreciate the advanced capabilities. Otherwise, in
"Dumb TTY" mode, your computer is just scrolling a stream of ASCII up the
screen; in VT100 mode incoming data can be "placed" in different spots on
the screen.
The capture buffer will still look terrible, but I've written a UEDIT
macro that will strip out the codes, converting some of them to LineFeeds,
and some to Hi-Lite On/Hi-Lite Off, so if you read the capture buffer with
MuchMore everything looks nicely formatted.
If anyone's interested I'll upload the Uedit command. Yeah, Roger
Gayle,
The 00000004 guru is "68000 Trap – Illegal Instruction". You might want to
pick up the program in the libs that gives you the guru interpretations.
(can't recall the filename offhand.) I keep it in my C: directory. I just
typed the command "guru 00000004" at my shell to get the above information.
You're probably correct about the cause being that you were low on memory.
The funny characters look like VT100 or ANSI escape sequences. Somehow,
you must have the host system set to treat your terminal in that manner.
(i.e, your host settings and your terminal emulator settings need to
match.)

David,
I shouldn't have any more memory problems now unless I get into
fractals, big graphics, rendering, raytracing, or a big sound sample of
Handel's Messiah (or something as long). I just installed 2 Meg's of RAM
on my A2091 HD controller from Amiga Warehouse. However, I couldn't find
the RamTest program, and I've misplaced my system diskettes. Moreover,
RamTest isn't on my hard drive HD either. Oh well, I found the bent pins
on the one chip that I misinstalled before I powered up.
I also tried to make a bootable diskette just in case my HD crashed
since I couldn't find my system diskette. Is there a straight-forward way
to do this? The PIPE: device certainly acts funny when you accidently copy
the c directory contents to the root directory instead of the c directory.
SoftWood has updated Pen Pal. We got it along with the promised
sampler for sending in our warranty registration.
I picked up an early copy of DeluxePaint by Electronic Arts in the
user group area of our Huntsville IEEE Computer Faire this past Friday,
March 1st, and Saturday, March 2nd for only $5. That's fun to play with!
What do you know about NorthC on Fred Fish 353?
Anyway, I'm keeping busy.

Gayle,
Glad that you've got things going and that you're pleased with your latest
acquisition. 8) Since we chatted last night in CO, I've Emailed the
information that we talked about to help you reconstruct your missing
disks.
According to the Aquarium program, there's a later version of NorthC on
Fred Fish disk #384. NorthC is also in our data libraries here, along with
other C environments. I did a quickie search using the new Amiga File
Finder (GO AMGFF) on "compiler" and then narrowed it with "c" and found 16
entries. You might want to check on the ones available here. Other than
that, I have no information on NorthC. I use the SAS/Lattice C compiler.
