#SyQuest or Bernouilli?

I'm wanting to by a removible hard disk system using cartridges. It would
appear that SyQuest and Bernouilli are the best. If anyone has any experience
with either of these system I would appreciate your feedback. What are the disk
seek and transfer rates for the different systems? I was thinking of getting a
model that supports at least 250Mb catridges or more. What are their advantages
and disadvantages?

I bought the Bernoulli 90 drive when it first came out. I was in engineering,
and that's what my customers used. When I switched my business to graphics, I
found out that all the local graphics services used SyQuest (big in the Mac
world). I would recommend checking with the services you will be using and buy
what they have, or you will be wasting big money.
By the way, I have only found removable disks good for carrying graphics files
to output services. If you are looking at the removable hard disks for
expanding your computer's hard disk storage, I would discourage you for several
reasons. The main one is the price. Look at the price of each removable disk,
and compare to the current hard disk prices. If you want storage, look at the
CD or DAT backup. If you are just tired of swapping floppies between
computers, spend $200. on two network cards and use Windows for Workgroups to
transfer.

This seems to be the general response. I was thinking of getting a 1Go SCSI-2
external hard disk that I could then transport with me to the service bureaus.
This gives me portability and compatibility with the majority of service
bureaus while allowing me to have a large fast hard disk at home.
What do you think? Is it more important to get a SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 drive? Which
are the best most reliable drives?
What are the benefits and/or disadvantages of DAT over CD backups?

I have IDE, SCSI-1, and SCSI-2 drives. I recently needed more hard disk space,
so I bought a couple of the Conner 1275 (IDE) drives. I have a PAR and my
reasoning was that if I needed another drive for the PAR I could use them in an
emergency. If you are going to invest in the PAR or some other system, you
should consider the compatability of your whole system. The rumors are that
DPS is designing an SCSI-? interface for the PAR; I would call them and use the
information as part of my decision. The only disadvantages I've seen with
SCSI-2 is the added cost of the controller, and the expensive and hard to find
external cables. If you want to buy a 9G drive, that will make your decision
for you. Again, check with the service bureau and consider the future
expansion of your system.
As for the DAT and CD. They both are good at what they do. The DAT is high
capacity 2-8G. It's great for backing-up systems, but not much else. The CD
is great for creating custom libraries of meshes, textures, animations,
scenery, audio, etc. You could use it to backup jobs, but it's not very
practical for backing-up your whole system.

I recommend going SCSI-2. FWIW. Much better than IDE, especially on 32bit
OS'. SCSI can handle more going on at one time. SCSI is really great. For
fast disk access, and porbability at the expense of upgradability, get an
external SCSI drive. Only about $150 more than a regular internal SCSI drive.
(just make sure you have SCSI on all systems) For removable drives, and easily
accessable disk storage, go Magneto Optical. There are 230 MO drives out
(SCSI) and their disks are only ~$30! For larger storage, get a 5.25 1GB MO
drive. Not as portable, but lots of disk space, and at a rate of some hard
drives. (slower ones)
For tons of backups of files you want to get to all the time, go for a
recordable CD-ROM. They're close in cost to the 1GB optical drives, but only
cost $15 per 600MB, and anyone with a multisession CD can access them. These
files cannot be erased though. They're permamently on the CD forever.
For lots of files for long time storage, or backing up large 9GB drives, etc.
Get a DAT. I've seen them go up to 10GB
BTW- all these drives are Fast SCSI-2. It's definately what you should get
into.

Hi,
I use an Bernouilli 150 transportable since last June. I found it very handy. I
have no problem with it. It work well and I have no special problem with the
configuration. It is not as fast as an hard disk but I can run program from it
at an acceptable speed. The thing I really appreciate from my 150 is that I can
bring big animation files at my working place inside a briefcase. There is no
Bernouilli drive at my working place so I bring the whole thing. Usually you
can connect easily to an SCSI port and run your stuff on another machine. The
hardware lock of 3DS is incompatible with the parallel port connector option of
Bernouilli, so SCSI connector is recommanded and faster anyway.The SCSI board
is not included with the Bernouilli, it's an extra :-(. The possibility to buy
new cartridges is very interesting. They have a 230 Mb model now ! The service
at their forum on Cserve is good. I can even find a french speaking tech rep
when I call at Iomega ! With the price of hard drive falling these days, it's
may be a bit expensive but if you need transportability.

My two main considerations is size, speed, and transportability. I figure
buying a 1Go external SCSI drive would be the best solution. This would allow
me to transport it to service bureaus without problem. Have you any experience
with SCSI drives and know which are the best brands?
For backups what do you consider best CD, DAT, catridges?
I'd talked with some people and they said they had problems with SyQuest
catridges saying that they often get errors since the catridges were fragile.
They were really disappointed since as backups the SyQuest catridges had let
them down on too many occasions. Has anyone else had this experience?

Without knowing exactly your purpose for a removeable HDD, here's this:
If you're looking for reliable, portable storage, look into optical. I've been
using a Maxoptix Tahiti 2M just like an extra HDD for over a year without a
hitch. A little slower than a real HDD, but _Always_ there, a very secure
resting place for all those files you're afraid to delete just yet. A gig per
disk @ ~$100 a pop isn't too pricey. Only problem is none of the service
bureaus has them, so any files going there ride on QIC or spanned, pkzipped
floppies.

It isn't Paris that is being flooded though Normandy and Brittany, to the east
of Paris, have been unindated with rain. Many homes are completely covered in
water. As for Paris itself we haven't had any problems. No problem for me
though since I'm on the second floor <g>

This is a consideration of mine. I just compressed 11 floppy disks of stuff to
move the other day. I need to be able to transport quite a lot of files to
other companies so I want something that is going to be robust and compatible
with the majority of bureaus. SCSI-2 seems to fit the bill.

Transfer speed is noticably slower, but for backups or storage, who cares? Its
faster than tape, and far more reliable. I used DC2120 QIC for all backups for
over a year, and lost several files due to read/write errors. I finally started
copying all important files to floppies just to be sure I'd have them if they
disappeared from tape. Since I got the optical drive, I haven't lost a single
file (that I know of).
Its painfully slow when copying and verifying lots of files, such as complete
directories, but its easy to plan a little nap time around such events.

Don't know. The glass media is good for 1 million rewrites and guaranteed
stable for 30 years minimum. I don't recall what the shelf life or stability
for tape is, but I know its much shorter, by decades.
I haven't priced optical drives or media in awhile, but when I got this stuff
it was less than $3,000 for the drive, the SCSI card, the drivers, and 5 GB of
rewritable storage, and I haven't filled up all of the disks yet. Much of what
I thought was going to be precious wasn't after all, so it got overwritten.

Sure. Most of the bureaus around here use SyQuest and are Mac shops, so not
much of the hardware I use is compatible with theirs anyway. Methinks your
gonna have to make a decision between what's more important: compatibility with
the shops you work with most, or maximizing your storage space.
Those recordable CD's are interesting if you want to immortalize your files. I
think they're relatively cheap, and CD-ROM drives are common enough that you
shouldn't have much problem finding one on a network in nearly every bureau. I
don't believe they're rewritable, so you gotta get it right, and be proud of
it, the first time you burn that disk. Too ridgid for me. I always leave plenty
of room for improvement, and most of the time, it shows!

I doubt it. I'm back in the corporate flow again now that the reorg has settled
in. One of my first new fun "duties" is to surf the net and locate references
to sustainable architecture (whoopie…). I haven't been there yet, so when the
ISDN line gets here, I'm sure I'll go away for awhile. I'm still plugging away
on a few fun 3DS projects, but none are near completion, and as you know, I'm

something that you believe is so incredible that it needs to preserved for all
time, then a few years later you come back and say "Did I do that!".

I've sent a request to the WinCIM support and am hoping to get something back.
I haven't made anymore progress on my model since I've got a pile of other work

I'm curious to see what storage device you'll decide to buy. This technology
development frenzy makes purchasing decisions almost painful. You can count on
whatever you buy today to be obsolete (or half price) tomorrow. I hadn't
thought of PCMCIA devices before reading Richard Avery's messages in this
thread, but that seems like a good and logical choice assuming it'll work with
what you're using now. Of course, if you wait a few days, a smaller, faster,
higher capacity, more universal and cheaper solution is bound to appear.
Meanwhile, you can always buy a good wheelbarrow to carry all those pkzipped
floppies from place to place. At least you won't have any IRQ or DMA conflicts
with it. All it requires is a weak mind and a strong back, and I'm sure you
won't need to hire anyone to train you to use it… 😀 …B.

I can relate though coffee isn't one of my vices. I recall when I first arrived
here in Paris that I figured the best way to learn the language was to get
through a few good French novels. So after buying one of the more recent
popular French novels I got about 1/8 the way through before I gave up. It was
too boring, so I instead bought a copy of a Stephen King novel that had been
translated into French. That way at least I could be sure the story would be
interesting 🙂

Yeh, I was just reading about the new Sony MD Data technology. It seems
interesting but still in it's infancy. "The future replacement for 3 1/2"
disks" was what was written in the article. Humm, another choice to add to the

Have you ever tried to get a wheelbarrow through the turnstile at the
Metro(subway)? I prefer to use a pack horse or mule when transporting my floppy
diskettes though they can make a mess in the train.

Basically the tools for creating models and animations are designed principally
to create objects with hard edges so you have to approach it with more of an
eye for aesthetics than for accuracy. I think that the greatest tool yet has
been Blobs which produce clean "membranes" between objects that would otherwise
be too difficult to create and animate. Though for many objects I used 2D
Shaper and the Lofter. For instance the chromosomes themselves can be created
as a smooth object and then using various bump and texture maps produce the
desired effect.
It all depends on what your purposes are. For the cell mitosis animation basic
spherical shapes perturbed with displace using a fractal image produces enough
randomness to appear natural.
The materials used are typically random also depending on what you are hoping
to achieve. We had a meeting with a leading expert in cytology and he said that
they don't truely know what colour each particular component in a cell is,
though we can find great references to the bump and texture of these
components. So the colour and pattern is an aesthetic choice, though we have
chosen colours that are normally used to stain the various components of the
cell when seen under a microscope.
The movement of such objects is more difficult since they must appear as though
they are alive. This includes sending waves through them and having them
pulsing.

The most future proof option is a CD-Rom read/writer- expensive, but the media
is dirt cheap, and any body can read them, even accross different platforms.
Writing is slow but quad speed reading is approx 600kb/s. If you want to get
ahead of the game then PCMCIA hard disks capacities just keep on getting bigger
(1/2 Gb is now on the horizon). These are fairly quick, and very small. I think
this will be the long awaited standard. I have no idea on pricing I'm afraid.

I was checking out the ads for the Pinnacle-Micro CD-ROM writer. Are you
familiar with this one? It seems to be quite popular and the price is around
$2000 which is quite a bargain. Its only 2X speed but I'm used to processes
that run after hours.
What do you think?

I am not familiar with Pinnacle-Micro, I know the Philips unit. This is an all
sing all dancing machine, but may only be slightly more expensive, and any way,
as I understand it the "technology" is in the software, rather than the
hardware. The writer should have a large buffer, the bigger the better. This id
because the writing process is not the same as writing to a standard FAT type
hard disk, and as such if you can send it large chunks of data to be getting on
with, it will work more efficiently. The software for the writer is the clever
bit. This should allow you to write Photo CD, CD-I (MPEG), as well as your
normal files, and as such your writer should support all of these. Photo CD is
a very compatible and efficient method of transfering images, and MPEG is
better than either Quicktime, or AVI.
I realy do think you should consider PCMCIA type III. This is not only
available on lap-top and note-book, but also for desk-top PCs. Every new
note-book, or lap-top has a PCMCIA slot, and a number of the larger PC
manufacturers are also including them. Don't forget that PCMCIA is the
interface for "Plug 'n' Play". The range of PCMCIA devies is quite increadable;
I think there is even a high definition camera. The hard disks, and Flash ram
are good way of transfering and storing data: they're so small. Check it out.

portable. I need to be able to send huge files in the mail and have confidence
that the recipient has a chance of making use of the data. If I could record
on CD-ROM I would have the solution I need. I think CD-ROM recorders give me
what I need, I just need to find a reliable unit to invest in. Thanks for all

Don't you think this is really alot more expensive than other slightly older,
but larger/cheaper storage systems? PCMIA isn't cheap- especially for a
megabyte intensive occupation as ours.. I'm interested in your reasoning (on
it's worth for the dollar)

We have this unit at work and have had lots of problems with it. We wasted
dozens of blank CDRs at the outset. The price is about the best out there, but
I'd suggest getting something else, maybe a Sony unit.

I have been using a SyQuest 270MB cartridge drive for about 4 months.
I would recomend that you get one, they are invaluable for keeping seperate
projects on their own hdrive.

I had the same questions a while ago and the solution was a HP 1533A 4mm DAT
drive… The tapes hold 4-16 gigs (at optimal compression) and cost you about
$9 each. The drive is in a nice, small external case and can be taken to other
machines just by plugging it into the SCSI bus (measures 7×2.5×10") and cost
you ca. $950.

Seek time is max 35 secs (if the file is at end of tape) on average 5 secs, but
once you found a file, (asuming that your files are sequential TGA's or
FLC's,), seek (access) is instantenous. The drive has a transfer rate of 88
megabytes a minute from there on.
I use Tapedisk from Tapedisk Corp. which lets me use the tape just as if it
was another hard disk on my system. All you do is plop in a tape and from there
on you have a minimum of another 4GIG harddisk at your disposal, all DOS
commands like copy, xcopy, move etc. work, you can even run Pctools etc. on it.
You can render to it (REALLY great if you want to have a bunch of non-repet.
animaps at your disposal), render from it (seq. TGA's IFLs etc) and so on.
Besides all the 3D-Studio stuff you can have another 4-16 GIG harddisk at all
times on your system. The tapes are only $9, the cheapest way you can go and
are extremely small and easy to mail.
