They definitely don't use 'em – (I-'88, snakes ). Just to get back to the thread subject, I gave a demo of Zoe at AMUSE last tuesday and showed off a lot of its new capabilities (new as in officially released). If anyone at ANTIC is listening, Pleeeeeze fix the…
Ahh, so it wasn't an original idea. Okay. I'll shoot a couple images off the DPaint distribution disk (is the Gorilla one?) and EPlex my address when I get 'em processed. — Art
Art-thanks for the timely response. Yes, I use the Polaroid Palette. I have trie d shooting a friend's Zenith/Flicker fixer, but it's not the same. I'll send you a slide of something commone (something off DPaint, the Gorilla?, or whateve r you suggest-we have a few in stock; perhpas the…
#F. Fixer vs. P. Palette
Message #9370
It just occured to me that Flicker Fixer could double as a poor man's (well, rich man's, no poor man's…after the purchase) Polaroid Palette. The thing that makes PP nice is how it fills in the scan lines so it is not obvious you are looking at a slide of…
I don't think Adobe Illustrator is being so smart as snakes. They have a number of parameters you tweak to get better results on the autotrace, and you end up with an object with a lot of bezier curves. That not bad, necessarily…
Syndesis has been considering/working on a 3D object viewer for the Haitex glasses. The slow start they've seen so far hasn't been a good sign for development. On the other hand, this viewer would be useful for other things. I think I have some 3D Sculpt renderings around here someplace,…
I've only seen one reference to snakes, in a book of papers given at a 1987 visual language recognition conference, which I was browsing through. something similar may be going on in Illustrator 88 for the Mac, which can convert a (pixelized) mac paint picture into linearized Postscript (which may…
Ethan – I think you are perhaps mid-interpreting the problem. We (IMPULSE) have been trying for almost a year to get the stuff we need to make a 3D version of Turbo Silver, but for some reason Haitex hasn't been very cooperative. We even went as far as creating our…
X-SPECS 3-D
Message #8573
I want to know: why is there not one message about X-Specs 3-D and only one file on it, uploaded from back in September? I think it is an excellent product. The effects are incredible. People won't buy it because there is no software and software developers won't make software…
Standards are great: That's why everyone has one. 🙂 And there are so many to choose from! It might lead you to believe that the only people who benefit from it are people who make conversion software. 🙂
CGM is used mostly for CAD-like drawings. I don't know if it incorporates bitmaps, I don't think it does, so it really wouldn't be possible to convert an Amiga bitmap to CGM. But I may be wrong, ask these folks if CGM handles color bitmaps, as well as CAD drawings,…
Yup, that's right, they wrote a sneaky backdoor to catch Movie switching screens, and then they grab them and turn them to ANIMs. I'd think these "snakes" would be great for monochrome images, but don't forget the dithering and HAM colors of Amiga animations. They are difficult to compress, period.…
PCX <-> IFF conversion
Message #8156
Do any utilities exist for converting PCX files to IFF and back?

From what I gather, he avoids the format conversion problem by doing the equivalent of Grabbit on animation frames. Whew! BTW – have you ever heard of "snakes"? These are software objects that "cling" to image edges (something like finite element analysis) and, because of their dynamic nature can track…
I don't know anything about CGM. It's possible there might be a conversion from GIF to CGM, and since we can convert IFF to GIF, it's a possible route. I doubt, however, that any GIF to CGM converter would run on the Amiga… –>Steve Bennett
#File Format
Message #8110
I ran across an "industry standard" file format the other day that I'd like to be able to change Amiga Graphics files into to take advantage of some wonderful graphics printing offered by a firm here. The format is called CGM–Computer Graphics Metafile. Didn't see anything in the AmigaARts section.…
It is just 1 way. That is, Amiga to Targa. I agree that a transfer the other way would be mighty fine, but for a current job I have going it would be handy to do the "rough" stuff in o'scan hi-res and then take to the studio and have…
It *is* just a one-way transfer program, isn't it? Amiga TO Targa only. It would be much more useful *to me* if it would also transfer data from Targa TO Amiga format.

Aegis Development's utility program GRABANIM will generate an ANIM file with most software systems. There are a number of other possibilities as well. Good Luck!!!
Amiga > TARGA convert
Message #7873
Thanks for your message! It jogged my memory to look for their ad in an old issue of Amazing Computing. I had ordered some other software from them last year. Anyway they claim it'll transfer any IFF except HAM to the Targa sys. He said that modem transfer of the…

Images to IFF ANIM
Message #7827
Thanks. I'm home with a stomach virus and I've done some fun things with my Amiga. I've used the RECORD function of Perfect Vision to rapidly grab 20 frames off of a videotape (in this case, the movie "It's a Wonderful Life"). I've then renamed those images to work with…
It sounds like a bug we squashed about six or eight months ago. You should send in your master InterChange disk to Syndesis, and we'll update you to the latest versions of everything. If you have any other InterChange modules, such as Turbo Silver or Forms In Flight, be sure…
Hi I bought the Human design disk in the videscape 3D format and I am trying to convert that to Sculpt format using Interchange and it works with small objects, but I'am missign parts of the object when transfering big files like the Righthand. I get only 1 or 2…

I guess ZoePlayer should be uploaded first… yet another animation format. However, this format is also the natural format for Live! captured sequences. So how does it stand now? There's Anim, Aegis ANimator format, Rif format, Sculpt-animate3/4D format, FAntavision format, Silver's Anim system … and I think another one or…
There is a group in Washington,D.C. area known as Lightning Publishers who claimed to have done this conversion 2 years ago. If I can dig up their number I'll post it here.

Yes, it is an AMi-forum. The next full-blown AMiExpo is in march, here in NYC at the (reprehensible) Mariott Marquis (the hotel on the Helen Hayes.Morosco theatre sites) ANyway, I can come out of the closet and say I've had Zoetrope since July and it is far and away the…

The Ami-Expo is in Orlando at the Hyatt across from DisneyWorld. The dates are SAT and SUN the 14th and 15th of Jan. Like I said, we will most likely have a working HARMONY there, and for sure the VD1 Digitizer Frame Buffer. I think it will probably be a…
Dunno, I'm not a math hound. I'm just remembering all those benchmarks that came out when Ami was first released. As I recall a stock 1000 outran an 11/750 even on things like Savage, and a Turbo outran a 785 in many cases. Anyway, I'm busy working on my own…
I know it can be done on a VAX or an IRIS GT system, but on the Amiga ??? M'thinks it would be difficult within the current hardware design.
Hi Steve…the biggest reason for the bad look of the demo is the origional demo was reduced 50% (all screens that is) by Antic so it would fit on the disk. It was done without touching up the frames after the mass shrink and the quality suffered. I thought I…

Zoe is MUCH more than another page flipper…it has loads of special effects and pixel effects that can be EASILY added to anims, as well as a mini paint program built in to add touching up…..very powerful software, and fast …its only limitation being 320×200…32 colors is the only choice…
Go take a look at IGDS on an InterGraph system. You can in fact do real-time moving splines if you flip on the proper modes. It's not instantaneous or even smooth, but it works. I've seen it. 'Course the InterGraph system I'm speaking of ran on a Vax 11/750. Also…
Oops. Sorry, it's been a long time since I've used Animator, and even longer since I've used it on an Amiga. Bear with my ignorance until I relearn this stuff.
Aha. Like an amoeba? Nope, sorry. Actually, that effect is not difficult to reproduce with bluing and changes histories…. in fact that is the same basic effect needed in stretch & squash animation…. No, you still have to draw it by hand, but Zoetrope does everything but draw it for…
I did not have to pay for Modeler 3D/VideoScape at all!. The company bought them for me!. However, now the project they were bought for has been done they dont feel like buying me any more. I also use Turbo Silver. The polygon problem with Sculpt to V3D does not…
Whoops. I think only the ST version of Animator has "strips". That feature wasn't ever in a release version of Animator for the Amiga. The Amiga Animator has "ani" files, as I recall. However, Amiga Zoetrope apparently loads the advanced strip files, too.
So how much did you pay for Modeler and VideoScape? What other 3D products are you using? As for flipping polygons, I think you'll find that the objects on the Antic disks will load into Modeler with the proper orientation. As for the objects on the Syndesis object disk, yes,…
Actually, I'd even settle for something which generated it a frame at a time, if it also allowed for zooming in and out and handling of very fine details. (And also, preferrably, produced the final output by generating a high res image and reducing by pixel averaging the resolution, thus…
Real time moving splines heh? Thou knowest what thou asketh for ???? If you find someone who can code it he can get a job right now!
I think you might have misunderstood what I meant by curves. I don't need an object to be able to move in a curved path, I want to be able to create an object by specifying a few points, and having it fit a curve to them. I want to…
Zoetrope can duplicate most features of Aegis Animator, though it uses totally different approaches. First of all, it will load STR files from Aegis. Basically Zoetrope's tweened "APM" controller lets you take a clip (anything you draw or whatever) and rotate (with perspective) in any of the 3 axis, stretch,…
Please dont take it personally, I'm not 'sliming' you products. All I was saying was that Interchange was not personally on my shopping list. I know I could get it cheaper from mail order, but taking the prices I saw in my local shop today, to convert from VideoScape to…
I rather liked Aegis Animator… It's main weaknesses IMHO were the lack of curve fitting between movable points, and somewhat weak 3D handling. But the tweening of polygons was great, so far as it went… Does Zoetrope have this kind of thing? In particular, the curve fitting, without which you…

Contrary to certain unknowledgeable opinions, Zoetrope is in no way, shape or form, a page flipper. I would, however, like to confirm that Zoetrope lacks overscan (its primary flaw). I'm afraid that its primary use (at the current time) is as a sketchpad for animations or as a 2D animator…
Steve – I think Louis' demo for Zoetrope was a last minute thing. If I remember right, he initially did it Using Turbo Silver, and reduced it from HAM to 32 or 16 colors, and put it into Zoetrope. Other than the lack of overscan and interlace, though the package…
I stand corrected regarding the hierarchies. Actually I would prefer it if Syndesis would do the conversion, as some stuff is starting to creep into our schedule, that may make the time to do it hard to find. As long and the objects can be broken down into their seperate…

Karl – actually it's something else. I have been beating both our programmers and hardware engineers to get me to the level of "pre-congnative" Ray Tracing. Once we get to that speed, Mabey I'll be satisfied.
Could be. I played with it for an hour or so and was underwhelmed. I question calling any product of that type "professional" when it lacks interlace and overscan. There is a demo on the disk by Louis Markoya. He is one of the finest Amiga artists around. I thought…

It's A LOT more than just another pageflipper. Zoetrope is a wonderful professional product. The only thing that it lacks is interlace and overscan.
