From: john munsch Amiga Vendor · C Ltd January 6, 1989 4:04 PM
I have a Seagate 277N on my machine at home with a C Ltd. controller. I have had no problems with it and have been very pleased overall with its performance. If you do go with this combo however… Let me warn you of a problems that I had when…
C-View I Message #4629
From: james platzer Amiga Vendor · C Ltd January 6, 1989 8:48 AM
I thought I'd let you know that I received my Amiga yesterday, and hooked up my C-View I NTSC cable to my color composite monitor and was very pleased with the results. In the beginning, I thought it was fuzzy, but after adjusting the dials on the back of the…

Robert, The choice is left to you on the FFS vs OFS. If you plan to autoboot a small OFS partion is in order. If not, then you can FFS the whole drive or partitions. Autoboot is nice, however, I elected to FFS all partions for myself at home. I…

Bruno, Either drive may be used. However the ST277R would require and additional card. My suggestion is the ST277N-0, or the ST277N-1. The -1 is a faster drive. Both models will serve you well. You don't need a bridge card to operate any dri=s the Amiga side of the A2000.…

From: BILL LEACH Amiga Vendor · C Ltd January 6, 1989 2:55 AM
Bruno: I am sure that others will jump in to help with your questions but to try to answer a few…… First, if you are going to install a drive in the 5.25 inch slot then it will have to be a 'half-height' drive. Another possible (and practical) option for…

Chris: Since I 'disappear' for months at a time, I doubt that I would be the one for anyone's BBS or Newsletter. Actually though, that would not be the problem since modems do exist. I think that time and long distance charges might be more limiting! 73, bill

Well folks, I finaly got my 3.0 upgrade and would like to get some information before I start formatting my HD. The Cltd manual does not say if I should create a small regular Amiga Dos section then and the rest as FFS. Does this mean I do not have…

Betty, "How much nicer if ARC could just accept the file names – and keep the directory structures – without making us rename and create script files to restore!" Sound a *LOT* like you are asking for ZOO. Does exactly that. And ZOO is FASTER than PKAX (the fast unARCer)…

From: Betty Clay/SYSOP Amiga Vendor · C Ltd January 5, 1989 7:14 PM
Bill, I have been using MAKEARC to do that, and it works quite well. Many people like to look at the names of the files, though, without dearcing. They complain when we rename things to "File1", "File2", etc. Renaming works, but it does not please those people at all. How…

Yes, Vic, you're right (jumping into another thread, "uninvited") the argument WAS over 'misappropriation' of SEA's code. The argument however was that it was SO much faster that it was not possible that a critical segment of code (to the algorithm) could be pirated with as much an improvement in…

…which is precisely what Larry Philips' ARCALL.REXX does. Works like a charm. And I often download files onto my office PC to review the text files. I just look at the EXEC.ME file to see what I want to extract from the ARC. — Art

Vic, Yep, I did mistate a few facts . I just reviewed the lawsuit files, and sure enough, selective memory strikes again. However, it still appears to me that the only people who really lost in this deal are all of us who use ARC.
#4530 #CLtd Scsi Dos Message #4584
From: Vic Wagner Amiga Vendor · C Ltd January 4, 1989 11:33 PM
Dave, I believe you're mistating the facts. According to 'official' SEA announcements over in IBMSW, the suit was based on the claim that Phil Katz used some of the original SEA code….not that he had a program which extracted ARC files.

Chris, a new person from C-Ltd, Fred, is actively answering questions in the C-Ltd forum – if addressed to the C-Ltd id (do a rtn right now and you should see some of his answers) and is, in my opinion, much more helpful then Charlie usually was. Ron

Larry, Ron was `right on the money' with his reply. DevInstall really is not the problem. Please make sure on the copy from 1.3 to your hard drive as well as your copy you used with your boot disk was done with the 1.3 copy and use the option "clone"…

Well…if they are smart enough to make it compatible with the old arc they had better have a good lawyer. Compatibility was part of the reason Phil Katz was sued and the main reason PKPAK is history. Hopefully Phils next attempt will be everything he's promising. Until then I'll just…

Some claim that ZOO does not compress as well as ARC. I don't really care which o% chosen, but I do think we should stick with just one. I don't think Usenet has really standardized, though. Lots of them like ZOO, but I still see ARCed things there. And then…

I certainly hope so, Jay. We really need to accept one or another of the methods and standardize on it unless the difference is really marked. ARC was chosen here because it was compatible with files in several other fora. For instance, you can unarc IBM files with the Amiga…

On Usenet the Amiga groups have all standardized on ZOO. It is litigation free, and isn't shareware. I've been trying to convince others that it is the only rational route to take for the IBMPC as well but without much impact yet.

You can do the same preservation with ARC if you run MAKEARC on the files first – and the user has no need for an extra depacker. The same is true of ZOO. It makes it very difficult for us if we have to have so many depackers. Betty

Ron, I'll look for it. However, we are getting a terrible proliferation of unpacking programs around here. I was happier when we used nothing but ARC. It's hard enough to tell beginners how to use one program, much less a dozen or so. Besides, all those unpackers take up still…

The C-View was not created with the idea of a short cut on the cost of a RGB monitor. It was designed as a stop gap measure for people upgrading from a system where they owned a reasonable composite or chroma/luma style monitor. If they did not have the bucks…
