Kurt, I got the drive from my local dealer who order it for me from Supra, so it was actually shipped mid-December. As I understand it, they HOPED to have the autoboot version into production by 1/1/89. This is less important to me because I've got an A1000 and have…
Michael, According to the docs supplied with it and all the literature I've seen, the GVP is a DMA interface. David
#Manx linker hangs
Message #29422
I picked up the books "Amiga Assembly Language Programming" by Jake Commander, and the Compute! book "Amiga Machine Language Programming Guide" some time ago, and I *finally* have time to start learning assembly on the Amiga. I typed in the "HIWORLD.ASM" on page 76 of the Compute! book, and assembled…
The bad thing about GVP's way of allocating resources is that even when you boot from a floppy the autoboot roms mount the partitions. I originally had 5 20 Meg partitions that ate nearly 350K. From what I've seen the Hardframe does the same thing, so that's probably a problem…
Heehe… on the other hand, in a very few years we'll be laughing out of the other side of our optical media, and bugging CBM for bigger partitions. 🙂 -larry
Steve, Whoops…just thought, maybe it's the 512K expansion card for the W. German A2000 that fits in the co-processor slot rather than the A501 that will fit the Amiga memory socket on the SideCar…or maybe the A501 and the 512K Card for the WG A2000 are the same. Don
Steve, I believe it was Hazy who said the A501 will fit the Amiga memory slot under the drive. It doesn't fit in the MS-DOS slots. Don
VirusX3.10
Message #29416
Jim, I checked your upload of VirusX3.10, added a file of information from Stan Kalisher's upload, and added another program, SYSCHK.ARC that may be helpful in controlling this virus. Then I arced that and put it in LIB 14. Our thanks to you, to SteQibbetts, and also to Stan, to…
Ethan, If you haven't done so already, I'd strongly suggest you check with GVP and make sure it'll both fit and work in a SubSystem 500 before you place your order. I don't think you'd be real happy if you got the SubSystem and the GVP drive and found they…
Charles, They don't…if your printer handles text only…the driver won't do a graphic dump. If it's a dot-matrix printer thou…most of them are capable of doing graphic dumps. If it's a daisy wheel…you'll get text only. Don
Larry, Right…per partition…now where did I put that 4 Gig drive, I'll prep it to 2 partitions…that'll do the trick! Don
Ethan, It's very easy to get PopCLI to invoke a Shell, rather than a CLI. Assuming that you are starting PopCLI from your startup-sequence, edit that particular line to read something like this: C:PopCLI 600 Newshell NEWCON:0/10/640/190/PopShell Specifying where PopCLI is located (in this case its C:, for me it's…
Keith, Unless Qlens needs an ungodly amount of chip memory, that isn't the answer either. My system has three megs, and there's usually around 400K of chip ram available after booting. I tried running Qlens under this configuration, and got the same results as Peter. I assume that this is…
After you sign off, you will need to unarc the file. If you don't know how to do that, look in Lib1 and read (with your capture open) ARC.HLP. Then go to Lib4, and download ARC.EXE. I suggest that if you need to do this, you type this path: df0:c/ARC…
Salvador, Downloading is confusing at first, but it is really very easy. Since I don't know what term you are using, it is harder to be specific, but this is what to do: First, find the file you want to download. To find a library, at the Forum! prompt, type…
I didn't open mine up either, but with the various controls on the back I was able to increase vertical height and horizontal width and keep the aspect ration looking just fine.
Steve, Haven't had mine open yet, so I can't adjust it properly. Adjusting the height to give no border messes up the aspect ratio, since the horizontal remains the same. -larry
Currently, for sale, in the US, NOW, there is only 1 2500. -sja
Get some sleep Don! There is no way the A501 works in the Sidecar. (Unless, of course, you mean to design your own board and recycle the 501's chips). -sja
Larry, I've got the ImTec also. I adjusted the vertical height and have no perceptable border on top and bottom. -sja
Steve, Partitions eat memory. I am thoroughly convinced that partitions are pretty much useless appendages, left over from some primitive OS or another. -larry
Amig in VIDEO REVIEW
Message #29400
The Amiga is mentioned in an article entitled "Computers Meet Camcorders" in the February 89 issue of VIDEO REVIEW. The Amiga is mentioned as one of three PCs for use in video work–the other two being the IBM ??? and the MACs particularly MAC II. Unfortunately, the author doesn't seem…
Art, Well, you will notice a considerable speedup with the Microforge over what the floppies provide. Unfortunately, I don't think the Microforge software will ever be updated. If you are getting a particularly good deal on it, you might consider eventually throwing the controller out and getting one that handles…
Betty, I did something unheard of, I read the manual. It says that the syntax for PopCli is as follows. PopCli command refers to what command is executed when the hot key is pressed. Scan code is optional. So I just typed PopCli 300 NewShell >NIL: See what a little…
I decided to get the GVP 42mb, 11ms hardcard. Price is important to me as well as speed. the cost was $799 + $22 for autobooting eproms. I think this was a good choice, in part because GVP has a good customer service reputation. I just hope it will fit…
Jay, Yes, it's an amazing thing, this radical idea of producing a good product and then supporting it with knowledge and courtesy. I don't know what the world is coming to, when companies that do it right can actually survive. 🙂 Agreed about the general flakiness. It's far worse than…
Wishful thinking Ron. 🙂
Ron, Assuming that you had a 'hard card' that did not have a CPU, that had no part of it outside the main box, it would leave the final requirement that it not 'change the radiation characteristics of the device in a significant manner'. Think about this one a minute.…
hear hear! The last thing we needed was yet another product that caused screaming about how poorly CBM designed things. -larry
#printer help
Message #29392
What happens if I print a beautiful picture to a printer that can only print characters? How do the Amiga print drivers handle this situation?
Dan, Well, _sometimes_ it does too little about telling you the problems in your code, while at other times it gripes and moans about the most trivial things. Lint is an exception. It gripes and moans about everything, effectively burying the important stuff in the quagmire of pickiness. -larry
Don, Actually, the 2 gigabyte limitation is per partition. 🙂 -larry
If the local dealer has a bridgeboard, I'll test it with Turbo Pascal. Metacomco is a real pascal, not much in common with Turbo if you do anything fancy. I have been programming with Turbo for years and love it. Somewhere I read that a company is making a "Turbo…
John, Running from bootable disks means that your Preferences settings will be taken from the disk you booted from. If the disk is not a protected game, you should be able to use Preferences to center the screen. -larry
You can set PopCLI to use the shell instead of the CLI. I did this from DMouse, but DMouse uses POPCLI to do that job. With DMouse, I only had to add the command -CNewShell. Sorry – I don't know exactly how it is done with PopCli. Perhaps someone here…
Well, Bill, You do know the right state to visit. But I hope you chose the right time. This week has been wonderful – I hear there will be colder weather for the next few days. You certainly will like Access!, I think. You might also want to look at…
Some dealers will take a 1000 in trade. Mine offers $400 for the 1000. That is probably about as much as you could get for the bare 1000 without a monitor or extra drive – but others here will probably know more about that than I. An ad in the…
Randall, Commodore has said that the 2000 will be their workhorse machine for a while to come, and that the new things will be available to 2000 owners on cards to add to the machine. They have been true to their word so far, and I think that will remain…
Do you know of any spreadsheets that can generate a Postscript file? Saw the question earlier today, and didn't know of one. Betty
Will look tonight, Khalid. Sorry it hasn't been merged yet. BTW, Khalid, would you tell me more about your SX500? I have an SX64, too. Betty
Dan, Lib4, ARC.EXE. Betty
You keep bringing that up. My answer is "So what?". If company X decides to file for Chapter 11, does that mean that CBM should too? -larry
Dean, Well…considering the screaming we heard about the A2090 not being autoboot…you bet we'd have heard lots of screaming if CBM released the A2620 with no RAM. Don
Clint, Advertised in the back of computer magazines. Don
Dan, That Bridge card was more than most hard drive systems. 🙂 -larry
Dave, Yes…the drives should be the same…but remember that SCSI is like RS232…there are manufacturer options. Many drives require that line 40 be disabled, and they work fine with the A2090, no idea on the HardFrame. Don
#RAM pricing
Message #29372
Ron, Newtek and CBM do not make the same sort of products. Newtek could not release their Video Toaster, because leaving it unpopulated would have meant that it was only part of a Video Toaster. ie. It will not work without its ram, period. CBM could have released the 2620…
Ron, That doesn't surprise me at all…the A500 is a much lower cost machine than the lowest Mac and the A500 sold more than the A2000 by a wide margin. Don
Ron, I will give you the same answer I gave then, I don't know. In an embedded SCSI drive, the encoding method is internal, and therefore unknown, unless you want to take the trouble to hang an oscilloscope on it and see what it is. -larry

FCC certification

Ron, You're learning! Yes, just about every board for the Amiga needs to be certified. Don
