#191434 #Field Order ?? Message #191604
From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Autodesk 3D Studio September 19, 1995 11:07 AM
What I was saying, Gary, was that if you originally rendered your files using 3DS's default field order (1), a simple change of the PAR's field order switch to 2 would have allowed you to re-compile your animations to the PAR without re-rendering them. There's no real "proper" or "improper"…

Hi Kyle, Sorry, but I've been so busy getting DEC to come clean, that I've not had the chance to really investigate what's out there in terms of dual proccesor systems. There is a dual 133 MoBo I was looking at called the Tempest. If you're interested, call Joe @…

#191215 #System and 3DS MAX Message #191316
In addition to MartinF's comments, I'd say that the DEC Celebris is an excellent, fully upgradable machine, Kyle. I bought one of the original PC/XL's early last year, mainly hoping to eventually easily upgrade to an Alpha, while keeping up with the Intel upgrades in between. Shortly thereafter, Intel changed…

#191148 #3D Studio Max Message #191172
As these boards seem to need ALOT of VRAM and DRAM to do their thing, I wouldn't imagine there's gonna be a considerably less expensive solution for some time, Scott. Someone did claim, however, that the game-oriented Glint-based board that Creative Labs was going to offer would support the HDI…
#191165 3D Studio Max Message #191171
Hiya Johnnie! Rest assured that the Elsa folks have every intention of supporting MAX with their GLoria line of Glint-based cards. This comes right from the horse's mouth, so-to-speak. In fact, I've been told that Elsa will offer an 8Mb board that supports 24-bit color without a rendering performance hit.…

Your processor types should have no bearing on network capability, Michael. As long as both machines are running the proper software, and have the proper network hardare installed, you should have no problem. -Alan

Peter, I'll try to answer your questions the best I can, but you'll ultimately be best off by calling DEC PC division at (800)-722-9332 to get DEC info from the horses mouth, so-to-speak. Re the re-compiliation of MAX for Alpha, there is no official word yet from Autodesk. If you…

Probably quite a few… My dual-floppy Amiga 500 had 1Mb of RAM and my biggest dream was a 20Mb hard drive that also came with 3 more Mb's of RAM! 1200$!! Never got it, though. Had a lot of fun modeling (didn't have enough RAM to render!) with Sculpt 3D.…

From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Shipping/Receiving September 11, 1995 10:33 AM
I share your enthusiasm about MAX, Tim. As you point out, NT's network capabilities are quite extensive and easy to use. This should help make network rendering a much easier operation (for many folks) than it was in DOS. -Alan

From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 11, 1995 10:33 AM
Tim, my Viper has absolutely no problems showing the full Window image during Window moves in NT when set to full drag. Please be a bit more careful about inaccurate blanket statments like this as many folks rely on this forum for information regarding hardware purchases. Thanks! -Alan
#190071 #Max Render Farm? Message #190115
Ron, as Gary has stated that MAX's network rendering capabilities will be very much like Classic's, I'd be *extremely* suprised if the "one hardware lock – many slaves" philosophy is done away with. -Alan
Selective raytracing, using the MAX renderer, is one of the options I suspect we'll have, Jerome. -Alan
#raytracing, radiosity Message #190070
Jerome, keep in mind that Corel *bought* it's raytracing abilities. The Yost Group typically writes their own stuff, or provides a way for others to contribute. This way of thinking, I feel, is neither ignorant nor arrogant. I just don't want you to be too dismayed if MAX doesn't ship…
#189980 Field Order ?? Message #190069
If you would have cahnged the PAR settings, Gary, you wouldn't have had to re-render anything! There's something nice about 60 motion calculations per second, eh? Have fun, -Alan
#189915 #Net render w/Max Message #189971
From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 9, 1995 10:50 AM
Bill, I'm pretty sure MAX's network rendering will be much the same as it is in Classic, but you'll have to run MAX (read:NT) on the slave machines. You DO want your MAX to take full advantage of yur slaves while rendering, don't you? -Alan
From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 9, 1995 10:50 AM
Yeah, Don, I haven't had to use AAP in a while, so I kind of forgot about it. But you're right, it's another one thats not gonna run in NT. Thank God for the dual boot! I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay out here in SoCal, Don. It's got…

Oops! By "someone" I meant Matrox! -Alan
Yup, totally agreed, James. The NT backup works flawlessly here. Since NT sees the *whole* thing, NTFS and DOS/FAT, this is a viable solution because of the very decent backup support in NT. A killer piece of hardware like the 8505 doesn't hurt! But I totally understand Greg's reasoning as…

#189771 #Field Order ?? Message #189787
Gary, try switching the field order in the PAR software (under PREFS/IMPORT:ORDER=)and re-compiling your animation to the PAR. The DPS fellows' field names (1, and 2) differ from the Yost Group's (0, and 1), so 3DS's default field order of 1 actually syncs with DPS's field order of 2, get…

Aleksey, I just wanted you to know that I showed Refraction Mapping to the San Diego User's Group last night and it was very well received. Combining 3DS cubic reflection maps with your wonderfully thought out refraction mapping techniques provided a truly convincing, efficient solution without the need to raytrace.…

I went with the non-AV version, and it's working just fine, Jim. Sounds like they've got a little dialing-in to do on the spindle bearings, huh? If you've got the P9000 version, I think RalphF is having the same problems. I've been using the Viper PRO SE 4mb with the…
#189450 Multiple Monitors Message #189553
From: ALAN IGLESIAS Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video September 7, 1995 10:36 AM
Terry, you're talking about rendering to a seperate NTSC frame buffer with it's own NTSC monitor for preview! This is something completely different than what it seemed you were describing. It's a great way to go if you are developing animations *for NTSC video*. RGB and NTSC are completely different,…

Uh — yeah, Phillip, I've done that here for years. But that's not what he was asking, or so I thought when he said "like a MacIntosh" and for "multiple Windows apps", not to mention the OS part of his question. This clearly implies using two RGB monitors to broaden…

#189368 # Help! SMP or RAM? Message #189401
Harley, by your message, it would seem that the difference in price between a single and dual-processor MB is about the same as 32mb of RAM. Is this the case? if so, there's definitely something wrong there! I think the difference should be around 300$, and that's only around 9mb…
#189354 #Multiple Monitors Message #189400
Ah — you mean using more than one monitor simultaneously! I've really no idea how one would go about doing this (and truthfully why one would want to, although I'm sure there must be a reason that I'm just missing here). There's probably some video card(s) out there that support…

I agree with your comments about Monica, Mike. One only had to watch her match with MartinaN to know she was 95% back (and her 95% is enough to plaster most everyone on the woman's tour). I just hope she feels half as happy-go-lucky after 6 months on the tour.…
