Douglas, Yeah, I think this rumor of a new chip design qualifies as something I didn't know! You could well be right — this could be more than just an incremental improvement — added impetus for me to wait as long as I can! Thanx again, SCL
I've been beating around the same mulberry bush. Seems like the best mobo out there at this writing is the SuperMicro CMS (4 PCI, 4 ISA, none shared) It's available with Triton, up to 512K pipelined burst cache. Interestingly enough, it seems that USA Flex uses it in their high-end…
Mark, hope you had fun at the show… Put me on that e-mail list too, pls. SCL
Thanx again, John! SCL

Rick, All I really know about it is what I've seen on this forum, which basically amounts to reports of rumors. (You've posted on the Which Video Card Works? thread, so I know you've seen that). If you can get him to stop talking about 8-plex Alphas , you might…
I, too, have on occasion noticed various weirdnesses when rotating something 180 degrees in one swell foop… My simple-minded solution: an intermediate keyframe at 90 degrees. SCL
Geoff, You will first need to generate sequential bitmaps from your flic. (I'm not sure what formats PSP likes, but tga's would probably be best.) You can quick'n'easy make the sequential bitmaps by just loading the flic as a background in 3DS, set all your options and click the render…
Glen, From your description, it sounds like you're placing your bulkhead cross-sections on a path, then hitting the deform/fit button. That ain't how deform works… What are you using for fit shapes? SCL
John, We're on the same wavelength. L2 size difference, and we're ignoring (1) the effects of HD subsystems, (2) impact of memory managers, config.sys, autoexec and 3DS.set differences, and (3) theoretically identical machines will, due to manufacturing tolerances, vary slightly in speed. Each of these variables could conceivably account for…
Sounds like the same problem… As I recall, we replaced the video card and it went away. But since it was just in 3DS,I thought at the time that it may have been overkill. It was a big co. and with their $$$, so I figured no need to argue…
John, Thanx for your confidence-inspiring words. Though some faced with my quandry (gotta get a new box by Thanksgiving) might opt for an SMP board in these days of Waiting-For-MAX, I think that by the time MAX does make its appearance, there'll be significantly better options available. So I decided…
John, Thanks for the add'l info. Main point of curiosity now is about cache — pipelined burst or not? Thanx again, SCL
Rick, This is indeed a disturbing rumor about Milleniums and PVRs. I would definitely appreciate you passing along any confirmation or denial you run across, since that's the exact combo I've been looking to put together. Needless to say, I'll let you know if I find out anything. Thanx, SCL
Peter, Not sure I understand the prob correctly, (not sure if the purple pixels are actually on the tga, or just in the display) but we had a very similar sounding problem at a place I worked… Turned out to be the video card, a Diamond Stealth, as I recall.…
Micropolis — I think it's called the Radion system, or something like that — several capacities and prices.
Douglas, Yeah, I'm hoping for Nov. too. Just out of curiosity, why do you expect the 150 to be a major increase? I'd expect a good 150 to (barely) break the 1-min. barrier on Chevy — Do you know something I don't? Thanx, SCL

John, Thanks for your numbers. How much RAM do you have, and how much and what type of L2 cache? Thanx again, SCL
Douglas, Thanks, that was just the info I was looking for. And I definitely intend to get 512K. A call to Micron revealed an error in the Computer Shopper test — They don't offer a 512K upgrade, contrary to what was in the article. Hence my interest in the SuperMicro.…
Serge, Don't pay any attention to those who give you trouble for your free toys! IMHO, they are just jealous of your generosity. I've d/l'ed all of them, and although I haven't used any for real work yet, I've had fun seeing what they do. And I'm just waiting for…
Yeah; remember Wang? SCL
Thanx for trying, Rick, but it turns out that wasn't it… Or that portion has already gone wherever it is that old postings go… SCL
After you change anything involving the AXP box (or whatever you're using) involving the flames, you have to (must be in the KF) object/attributes and then just re-open the set-up and close it to get it to recalc the SMD. SCL
Gee, Martin, can I come sweep your floors? SCL
Bob, Thanx for the clarification; I wasn't too sure myself, and figured better safe than sorry. SCL
John, Thanx for the tips. This stuff just keeps getting more and more complicated, but since it also keeps getting faster and better, I'm not complaining! SCL
Mike, I spoke with someone at Digimation on Monday and they had PVRs then, in stock. (Didn't ask about the daughtercard though) SCL
PMJI, but as a matter of fact, DEC makes a line with _just_ that — so (guess what, folks?) you can upgrade to, you guessed it, Alpha(s), oh, say, in 3-4 months?!?!?! Golly, Mr. Wizard, why on earth might ANYONE want to buy a new PC now, with the intention…
Greg, Thanx; I'm surprised to learn that you can get even THAT big with Workstation alone. (Guess they're not QUITE as greedy as I thought! ) SCL
Thanx; I've read the same article. And that just corraborates what I've been saying all along (for the last month, anyway) about the P6. It's gonna be the P5/60/66 all over again. The earmarks are all there — (relatively) large-trace fabrication process (equals bigger, more power-hungry and hotter) and clock…
#SuperMicro mobo
Message #193552
A couple of weeks ago, there was a discussion here (I think it was in The Perfect System thread) about SuperMicro motherboards, and how, of two similarly-numbered models, one was newer/faster/better than the other. I seem to have deleted that thread, and now can't find it. Does anyone (perhaps those…
Rick, 28 times?!?! Geez, and I've been snivelling 'cuz the P133 times are _almost_ 5 times faster than my poor, old DX2/66! SCL
Yes. PVR = Perception Video Recorder. The reason for my question was that a lot of machines seem to have clearance problems with full-length cards. Thanx for your help. SCL
Thanx again, Rick. I'm e-mailing him this a.m. SCL
Thanx! You seem to have one of the faster 120s — do know if you have an unobstructed, full-length PCI slot (for a PVR) in there? SCL
Well, if you're in N.Y., I don't think I'll be patronizing your assembler. (I'm in L.A.) Are you on Intel's press release e-mail list yet? Their ads all have their web page address, and from there it's quick'n'easy to be listed. Re: P6s, IMHO, it'd be a good idea to…
Rick, Thanx for the info. Where is Mind Computer Consultants? A phone, e-mail address or CIS number would help. Send via e-mail (my nickel) if you don't want to post this on the forum (guidelines?). Thanx in advance, SCL
Thanx, Harley, I'd appreciate any info you can provide. Is yours that SuperMicro mobo, too? It seems to be (one of) the hot setups. What do you consider local? (I'm in SoCal.) Thanx in advance, SCL
Veeerrrry interesting! You're not having any trouble running EDO and non-EDO RAM at the same time? Is that a Triton chipset? SCL
1:05!?!?! THE NEW RECORD!!! That SuperMicro mobo must be THE ONE! I'm also waiting on the P150… Where did you get your 133? BTW, if you're interested in seeing how fast you can go (and who isn't?) I've had luck on several machines with no memory manager at all –…
Greg, PMJI, but lemme see if I got this right… You're saying that with fewer than 10 nodes, you can set up a server running NT Workstation; it's just if you get bigger that you need to go to Advanced Server (?) Thanx, SCL
Daniel, Just out of curiosity, I checked my machine, and it also has IRQ 0 assigned to "Timer Click," whatever that is… Admittedly out of my depth here, it seems like you'd need to reset the IRQ of the PVR, not the rest of the system. Don't the docs say…
Lee, You're right that most, if not all, of the speed gains will be eaten up by the increased swapfile access. It MIGHT even be a little slower! I think the question to ask yourself is, does it look like you'll be able to increase the RAM any time soon…
John, Actually, there was a short exchange on EDO RAM somewhere in this twisted, convoluted thread. It turns out that EDO RAM ain't what it's been cracked up to be… Pipelined-Burst Cache is the real improvement in speed. Evidently, if you have pipeline cache and substitute EDO RAM for ordinary…
Daniel, SCSI address 0 is generally reserved for the controller, so your best bet is to change the address of the HD. What you change it to shouldn't matter, as long as it's NOT 7 (assuming you don't have another HD on that SCSI chain, and it doesn't sound like…
Terry, It sounds to me like you've got lots of TINY faces around the boolean joints… that happens… Two ways to fix it I know of: Easy way is to select the whole object, then Modify/Vertex/Weld (Selected). This'll often work. If it doesn't, or only partially helps, you'd best brush…
I've noticed it, too. Also noticed significantly more difficulty just getting through to my local gateway, so it may be that the reduced rates and the elimination of extra "Extended" charges have combined to incite Joe User (or his peanut-butter-encrusted offspring; after-school hours seem worst) to spend a lot more…
I'd like a price list, please.
Hey, Harley! That's a pretty quick box you got there! You said you got it from Micron? Is it a Millenium? One of the reasons I got myself involved in this whole benchmark thing is that I'm in the market to replace my DX2/66 (finally!). Have you looked under the…
Have you seen the various 'Benchmark' threads? We've been rendering Chevy.3DS, all defaults, metal shading (the default), the camera that pops up when you load it, no save, 640x480x1, Pixel Size 1.1. The intent is to compile an ongoing reference for the Lib. Nobody's clocked a 133 yet — You…
WHIZBANG.AXP??? What did I miss? Where can I get it? Is the whiz animatable, or just the bang? I don't care how much it costs; I GOTTA have it!!!
