#62296 #Vanishing Message Message #62438
The file limit only applies to the root directory, and is either around 128 or 256 files. Subdirectories have no limit on the number of allowed files. Could be a buffer problem in the software though. LAM
#60454 #IPAS/3DS3 Message #60486
Does the 3DS3 extender reclaim memory once it's been freed? Looking at putting 3DS on our compute server, but can't have it suck up all the memory and never let it go! LAM
#Opacity mapping Message #59923
See if anyone has a suggestion. I have a squiggly path that I using to loft a rectangle to form OBJ1. I am using the same path as the path for an object (OBJ2) in keyframer so that it travels along the surface of OBJ1. I am applying an opacity…
Explode IPAS wish Message #59922
From: Larry Minton Autodesk Software Forum · Wishlist October 2, 1993 2:20 PM
Now that you have spit and shined V3, a wish for the Explode IPAS: animated blast radius so a big object does not all explode at once, but over N frames starting from the center of the bounding box out. I'm simulating this via breaking the object into pieces and…

"Humble and bowing Rick" Words of wisdom: never bow to either the Chinese or the Japanese. You will only embarress yourself and them. Americans just don't know when and how to bow properly. Always hated it when, as the elevator doors closed, your Japanese host is bowing to you, and…
Ok, Thanx LAM
OK, I will go with a bunch of command line parameters . I am off to glorious Paducah, KY for a week. I'll try to put up a new version next Sunday. Anyone know where 3ds puts the "current frame counter" file, and what its name is? Thanx, LAM
The disclaimer is off of some BBS. I liked it. It's 3DS specific about 1/2 way through. The program automagically updates extract.dat each time it's run. So if you specify TEST0000.TGA in the data file, the data file will be updated to TEST0001.TGA the first time the program is run.…
#Spurt problem? Message #55043
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you . LAM User: Why aren't the answers I get from the code the same as in the example in the manual. Programmer: Well, the version we used when writing the manual gave the wrong answers. The current…
I hope your father is doing well. (1) I intentionally wanted to set the dat file name in extract.dat to handle the case where the dat file sequence number wasn't the same as the frame number. I could set it up so that the program reads the file created by…
#Spurt problem? Message #54795
Bugs? Weren't no stinkin' bug. Just souped up the interface between 3ds & IPAS (and broke 90% of the pirate versions) as I understand it.
Spurt problem? Message #54794
OK. Thought I'd get away with skipping 2.01 and going straight to 3.0. Almost, not quite. Thanx, LAM
Bowing? Better make that a salute, boy! Where else can you get volunteered so readily? (other than our staff meetings – people not there tend to volunteer for a lot of things…) Let me know if the program worked as advertised, and if you have any recommendations (please!). I'll put…
#53953 #Spurt problem? Message #54097
Will Spurt run (slowly) on version 2.0? Or is 2.01a needed? Thanx, LAM
Yes, looking for a used one.
Yep. My cohort upgraded to a newer version of Painter(?) on his Pinacle (sp?) machine, and it wants more memory. Rather insistent about it as a matter of fact. He has a 2 meg card, and it looks like it could be upgraded by adding memory to it, but it's…
Rick: You have just volunteered for "Beta Testing"! See E-mail. Enjoy! LAM
Anybody have or know of somewhere to get a VMX board for an ATVista? Looking for at least a 4 meg board. Thanx, LAM
Sparklers Message #53470
From: Larry Minton Autodesk Software Forum · General August 14, 1993 2:51 PM
My cohort is looking at a project where he wants to do a shaped sparkler. Can you make a recommendation on which of the IPAS routines you think would probably do the best job? Thanx, LAM PS I knew I'd eventually find someone to pay for some IPAS routines for…
Rick: Some stuff I remember, other things I forget (like what day is today?). Let's see if I understand what you want to do. You want to have a set of TGA files in a .ZIP file. These .TGA files are sequentially numbered. On each call from video post, you…
#Siggraph Report Message #52337
Tirelessly? Jack looked pretty wiped out by the end of the day…
Look at PC Magazine, Vol 12, Number 7. (April 13, 1993). The User-to User column gives a batch file that will do what you want. LAM
Agreed – that's why I try to keep somewhat up to date on single board CPUs – my friend's computer is definitely non-standard. FWIW – from a industrial computer company – Single board CPU – 486/33: $1900, 486DX2/66: $2600. That's with CPU but no memory. Max onbard memory is 32…
I watch prices on single board (or at least CPU and memory on a single plug in card) for a friend of mine. Let's just say that at the moment it's cheaper to get a new motherboard. Unfortunately, he doesn't have that option. LAM
#47629- #Extra Memory for 3DS Message #47936
Try rendering a small file which doesn't require disk swapping before you do the "upgrade", one after. If possible, do 2 each, one with QEMM, one without. Enquiring minds want to know the render times ! LAM
re: Greg Pyros message – QEMM will sort memory as to speed ("Automatically detects speed of memory in the PC and uses fast memory whenever possible"). FWIW, LAM

Question from Internet-land. Reply to me, and I will pass it along! Thanx. >>Some questions: >>with VGA 3DS only displays color on one material at a time during material >>editing, understandable but not very user friendly; if I move to 24 bits >>do I gain color on all materials shown…

The package arrived last night. It appears that they are more like line drawings, but I haven't had a chance to play with them yet. Will update as I get to it. LAM

I'll give them a buzz. I should be able to find someone running ACAD around here, somewhere (>7000 people in company at last count). Thanx, LAM

Data Tape and 3DS Message #41601
I was also looking for this capability. A company called "NovaStor" sells something called "Tape Processing Utilities" for about $400. It doesn't make the tape look like a hard disk, but it will allow you better access to the tape drive than using tape backup programs. I talked with Pete…
#memory problems Message #37534
Disable BIOS shadowing in Setup to get the Gateway to see more than 16 meg. That will cause a minor slowdown (ROM access vs. RAM access for BIOS) unless you use QEMM or its equivalent. QEMM shadows the BIOS, so that should take you right back up to speed. LAM
Any architects willing to answer 2 quick questions? One question is about minimum roof pitch and the other is about plumbing . Reply E-mail pls. Thanx, LAM
#33529 double reflections Message #33554
To paraphrase Angelo, "I do CIS from work and thus was relying on memory (bad move usually)." To save face, I actually looked it up at home, and sent a retraction. Guess I'll just go back to asking the questions… When I skew selected vertices, what the heck is the…
#33464 double reflections Message #33552
Ignore my previous message. The name of the parameter is "NONFLAT-AUTOREFLECTLEVELS". Sort of by definition it doesn't do what you want. Oh well… With the method you mentioned, you can map a TGA to an object, so you won't need to go to ANI to make it a CEL. The…
#33464 #double reflections Message #33486
On the distribution disk there is a readme file. In the readme file it describes a parameter in the 3ds.set file called (something like) AUTOREFLECT_LEVELS. Default setting is 1. Bounce that up. I think that parameter handles flat mirrors, but I'm not positive. I'm sure Gary will let us know…
#32250 Mind's Eye Message #32549
But what do you back up that 1.2 gig drive onto though? Basically I just wanted a medium to transfer TGA files to a video house. I've already set them up with SCSI hardware on a prior project with them. Seemed like tape would be the cheapest medium for a…
Screen updates Message #32548

I'm getting the same thing on certain flics. Doesn't seem to matter what software (Ani, Play) I use to display it. The fire flics on the CD-ROM are the worst offenders. If I let if play long enough, random garbage gets spread all across the screen, and then the computer…

I don't mess with the Unix boxes around here. Something about the odds that a 1000 monkeys randomly pecking at a keyboard would trash the system before they ever finished writing "Hamlet"…

I have been digging around in the source code of POV ray-tracer. Of particular interest were the routines for wood and granite. Anybody out there learning to program IPAS routines who would be interested in making a PD IPAS with these routines? The routines themselves are pretty simple. LAM
#32009 #Mind's Eye Message #32149
Sounds like an option. I need to track down the specs on scsi tape drive software commands. Would love to set up a tape so that it looks like a slow hard disk. Actually, I think they used to be called "streaming floppies" way back when. On the other hand,…

From: Larry Minton Autodesk Software Forum · Hrdware/Drvrs/ADI January 13, 1993 5:28 PM
I'm not even sure what the memory address limit is on an ISA bus. Doesn't really matter as memory is usually placed on the motherboard. I wonder what the max physical memory you can put on a 486 is?
#31752 Mind's Eye Message #31927
I talked just today with Pete Means at NovaStor Corp. One of their products "TPU" – it's used for reading and writing IBM and ANSI standard labeled and unlabeled tapes. Handles 4mm DAT, 1/4", and 8mm Exabyte tapes. Cost is $395 for DOS version. They also have a C-programmer's interface…

Mind's Eye Message #31721
Re: Exabyte tape drive. Back in a previous message you said something about putting an image file in the middle of the tape. Do you have your tape unit set up as a "real slow hard disk", or are you saving the image files via tape backup software? Thanx, LAM
#31324- Anonymous FTP – How? Message #31720
Yep, that's the right site. I have this $3,000 conversion program that will read in an ascii file (in the right format) and output a valid 3DS file. It also does something called "rendering" . In other words, I sat in front of 3DS and sucked one in, spit it…
I picked up the objects off of Internet. If you have access, I can send you the address. If not, leave me a message with your address and I can send out some floppies. I'm not sure what the native format of the files I translated to 3DS were. Some…
