When IBM chose a processor, they had the option of the 68000, but intel offered them a better deal ( a couple of dollars per chip probably ). The people who worked on the original pc have stated that they regretted their choice. Phill

With the amount of noise on a mains cable, a bit of phase error isn't going to make much of a difference. The mains isn't anyway near a perfect waveform. Phill

Well, I have a string multiply in a system I wrote, it has to multiply a 9(4.6) by a 9(3.2) or a 9(3). How would you do this??? Phill

Probably cheaper to do it that way, especially if AT are going to honor the waranties in that case. I haven't seen anything about waranties at all yet, I guess there is no offsite waranties like CBM UK used to supply Phill

I thought about getting a ups, but I don't have any problems with electricity dropping out. I guess some crashes could have been caused by interference, but they could just as easily be bugs in software or my machine getting old. At work we fortunately don't have ups's, so when…

The 040 would need a bit of help to run 1.3, I am sure there was a degrader that allowed 1.3 to run with an 040, the name escapes me though. Phill

Yeah, relatively constant, it might run at 49.5hz or 50.5hz at different times of the day ( well they might not run that far out of range, but they can never be 100% accurate ). Phill

Exactly, the 060 was only designed to keep the embedded people happy, motorolla didn't want it to be put in a desktop, only to be used as a stop gap so that people could port to the ppc in more time. It wouldn't suprise me if motorolla wouldn't starve the…

I could be wrong about the a2000a looking like an a1000, that may have been a prototype. I think most of the problems were ironed out before the machine was manufactured in significant numbers. The 2000b was a lot better for a number of reasons, I think this was designed…

Alot of companies are offering hd/non hd versions, whether the hard disks come from at though is debatable. I think at were using 170mb disks but you can buy a1200's with 540's already ( well they are advertised anyway ). Phill

In the uk the power line frequency shifts quite a lot, it averages out over the day though, which is why clocks manage to keep time. The uk power supply is also never exactly 240 volts, we checked a volt meter at work the other day and got 245 volts.…

AmigaBASIC also didn't work if you had an accelerator with 32 bit addressing. I guess they were used to programming on macs where it seemed to be encouraged to treat addresses as 24 bit values with an extra 8 bits for you to use how you wanted. Phill

You should be able to create code for the amiga using codewarrior, all that would be needed would be a linker ( of course they probably use pascal convention everywhere which would spoil my idea ). It's a pity that the unix world abandoned the 68k series otherwise we could…

Escom could have a problem with the 4000T if they can't get any 060's ( ok, they could just sell the 040, but they need the 060 ). I suppose escom could be buying up all the 060's causing a shortage, but they are probably hit as well. Phill
