#194844 unrolling cylinder? Message #195837
You mean like the motor in a VCR or in the newer floppies where the coils are on the PCB arranged in a circle ? -Peter
To really get the most out of MAX, I would recommend the following. 1. A dual Pentium PC, or Dual Pentium Pro (P6) if you are mainly running NT apps. 2. A GLiNT Board (definately!!!!! a must have) 3. 48 or 64MB RAM 4. A DPS PAR or PVR. The…

G'day Darin Is it just the case of the motor unrolling, or the whole thing assemblies and all? -Peter
#194511 No Auto Reflections! Message #194659
To get the Mirror working, and to check if its okay, do Tutorial 12 in the Tutorials manual. Seriously, pay attention the section headed 'Flat Mirror Reflection Mapping' (Pg 12-30 in R3, I think it's the same pg in R4). The tutorial will only take about 15 minutes if you…
G'day Kevin, If you want chrome robots in 3DS a-la the Minds Eye…We've done PLENTY of 'em. Just as shiny, and chromy and whatever you want to call it… 3DS can do chrome as good as anyone else. Freezeframe the Minds eye section (If you have a laserdisk it is…

Why not use Smacker and compress the flic down even further? You should be able to get it down to about 1/6th of the size with a high quality image. -Peter

No, the pixels are not in the .TGA file, only on screen, but ONLY when viewed via 3DS, view them with anything else and no purple pixies…hmmmmmm
G'day again all, All I seem to do lately is yell for help, but here I go again! Truevista pro board is giving a wierd problem with R4. When displaying rendered .TGA files, you get stray Purple pixels all over the place. The image is fine during the render, its…
Also check out the T-rex images in the IPAS Usage directory, they are pretty good! (and very small!!!) -Peter

Is it a true trimmed surface nurbs modeller or just a bezier patch modeller?
#192117 optimize \ Message #193864
From: Peter Richards Autodesk Multimedia Forum · IPAS Usage October 3, 1995 8:18 PM
G'day Damien, I also have had a few problems with Optimize crashing after doing one object after another. Sometimes after 4 objects, sometime less… Just save after optimising each object, it is a little annoying, but it works. It sounds as if your project is still a little large though…..…

Pleeeeeeeease upload the T-rex model!!!!! -Peter
G'day Tyler, I have been through this problem many times, but try this little trick for attaching LOTS of objects together. 1. Select EVERY object you want to attach together including the object to be attached to. 2. Make sure the selected button is highlighted (hit the space bar to…
#192134 #Spine Model Needed Message #193858
Viewpoint Datalabs have an excellent model of a human spine that we purchased to animate back problems using motion capture gear. It is worth the dollars, so give them a call! -Peter
#192031 3DS benchmark Message #193856
The times I gave you were for 640x480x24 bit. All machines had 32MB Ram. Pentium 90's best effort was 1min39s on a DEC Celebris, other pentium 90's were anywhere from 1.50 to 2.30

#193765 #Normals edting Message #193853
If you are getting model corruptions, it is usually a problem with the 3ds.exe having been modified or corrupted in some way, perhaps be a virus or a hard disk error. Re-installing from your original disks should solve the problem, and ensure that the hardware lock (dongle) is securely in…
#191934 Normals edting Message #193852
G'day Anthony, For CAD models with normals problems, I use the OPTIMIZE routine from the Yost Group. It has an excellent system for flipping the normals in question, and it all happens in a real time rendered mode so you can see the results and keep on tweaking until you…
#192022 help mapping/mat'l Message #193850
G'day Tony You should also make sure there are no co-planar faces in the floor, as this can cause the exact problem, and it is always a good idea to use a grid (PXP GRIDS) instead of a box for floors etc. as you get better shadowing, less problems, and…
#Create YUV from 3DS? Message #193848
Totally off topic, but while you're here…. Do you have anything that will allow 3DS to go straight out to an Accom? Or alternatively to allow you to create YUV files from 3ds? Just a wonderin' -Peter. PS. Did you get S.A.W. and is it working for ya?
I am sure I have converted images of much larger than the resolution specified. In you render configuration, make sure that the driver is set to NULL instead of VIBRANT or everything will get re-sized to your screen resolution. -Peter
Are you talking about Mesh-paint from Positron or something newer? -Peter
#192042 Help with Video Post Message #193845
It could be that when in Video Post the computer has more files standing open, than when you do a straight render, pushing it over the 'open files' limitation. maybe? -Peter
#Accom and 3DS??? how? Message #193843
G'day All, Was just wondering if there was an IPAS available to get YUV files out of 3DS? Or alternatively, How to get 3DS to talk directly to an Accom disk recorder? Anyone out there been through this one already? -Peter

G'day Steve, I am running 3DS on a Toshiba 610CT which is a Pentium 90, with 40MB Ram and 680 MB HD, inbuilt soundcard and two PCMCIA slots, currently with network and modem cards in them, I hot change the modem with the SONY CD-rom/walkman. It also has a 24…
Yeah, unfortunately this job calls for photographic quality at close scrutiny. Rendering with moving the camera is a problem as the perspective distortion screws things up… *sigh*
G'day all, We have a person that needs to render out a single image, for printing across 5 separate posters, that will all be assembled into a single SUPER SIZE poster. To get the quality level required, the image would need to be rendered at about 38000×9000 Yecccht! The alternative…
The Indy 150MHz renders with the SGI renderer at about twice the speed of a Pentium 90 when rendering the Chevy. – Peter
No, the NT for the SGI will not run 3DS R5 unfortunately…. – Peter.
Things have progressed re the Kurta… Sort of. Tried a range of kurta models, all work fine, only the Kurta XGT has the problem… Wierd. -Peter

#179421 #Smacker Message #179424
G'day Kyle, Smacker is excellent for DOS, have almost finished authoring a complete MM CD title with it, and am very pleased with the quality, compression and speed. The updated Windows version is still not &*%$#'ing out, so am still waiting for it to release my title. Can give it…
Was the ground just one LARGE box (ie very few faces?) or did you use a grid for the ground? Also, were the boxes co-planar with the ground surface? Just a wonderin' – Peter

#179164 Opacity ?? Message #179208
Try using a map in the MASK box next to the opacity MAP box. The mask you use will make the opacity map not apply to the areas that are white, and only apply to the black areas. Re-do the Materials exercise in the Tutorial guide, or try the examples…
You could have a look at digimations new bezier patch modeller. A working demo is available here for download (BPATCH.ZIP) in the IPAS forum. Also, you could purchase a pre-built or cyberscanned head. – Peter
Check out Animator Studio, it will do that and much much more. 24 bit animation paint and sound, AVI FLC MOV you name it its supports it. – Worth a look. Peter
#177360 Rendering Time Message #179172
We have 10 networked Pentium machines for the task, have also Hired extra machines for the couple of days when necessary. Also, you may be able to reduce you rendering time, by different modelling and texturing techniques, but yes, render times should be taken into account when rendering big jobs.…
