Truer Reflections
Message #196461
To anyone who read my message about renderman being a ray tracer, may you forgive me, I meant to say Rayman. D'oh!! – Neil
James, I agree, the system is drilled into us from birth, but I think our heights will remain in Feet for millenia to come. I learned Farenheit first, which is really funny when everyone around me speaks in Celcius. I've freaked out so many people telling them its 32 degrees…
Brian, In MAX the renderer provided is a plug-in, and I was told that there would be many renderers available for use inside MAX, including a ray tracer (I know it's painfully slow.) At that time, someone might be able to make a better reflection map renderer, or maybe you…
So, you're a fan of the metric system, eh? I live in Canada and we have to deal with the metric system everyday. But the system isn't perfect. Lets face it, how tall are you? How tall am I? I'm 6 ft tall, or am I 1 meter and some…
Thanks, I know about those scripts. I'm using them for a completely unrelated project right now, but maybe they will work for the splatter project if I use them along with Metaballs or Meterreyes. – Neil
Thank Danny, I'll look into a metaballs program. – Neil
Thanks Martin, I've tried lofted splatters, but they never seem to come out right. I guess I'll have to invest in Metaballs in the near future. – Neil
#Splatter
Message #195293
Is anyone making or has a technique for making animated splatters. I think it would be a good IPAS, it could be used for everything from blood splatters flying out of a victim to a raindrop causing a splash in a pool. It shouldn't be difficult, it's just a particle…
See "BIG MAGIC EXPLOSION" In IPAS library, it might be exactly what you're looking for. If you're interested in the technique, send me E-mail. – Neil 102226,3566
The DPS runs your animation at incredibly high quality off of a seperate harddrive. You still need the computer to see it, but nothing stops you from hooking up a seperate card that captures what appears on the screen and sends it to your VCR. The Mpeg card is a…
Boris, When I started at Compuserve, they gave me a temporary password. At some point in the near future, you should recieve a letter which gives you your permanent membership and password. After that, you can contribute files. It should be soon, but as Anne said, all the new users…
I personally use a MARS MPEG board. It's a great little device, True color, the animations are compressed, send output to either a S-VHS or standard VCR, and comes in two varieties, MARS 1 (350×240) and MARS 2 (700×500). It doesn't give crystal clear results, but it's a whole lot…
I know this might sound strange, but I didn't even know you COULD delete forum messages. I don't know where it could have gone, I got a hold of it, but I don't think I deleted it (Note: The right hand rarely knows what the left hand is doing). I'm…
Thanks, although I hate to say 2-3 pm eastern is when I usually call. Ugg, you mean it's even slower at other times???? I'll send some complaints down the pipeline, maybe it will jar something loose, like back to the days of fast downloads. 🙂 Neil
#I have Speed?
Message #194394
Anne, I know a lot of people have been complaining about slower downloads due to Cserve's new pricing policy, and I admit I am also a victim with painfully slow response to even simply commands. All of a sudden, at about 12:00 Central time, the service seemed to increase in…
Unlike Chris, I find it has very little to do with normals. I do a lot of organic stuff, so I have very complex shapes that need to be cut and merged. 3DS Booleans aren't bad, I just have to believe there's a better way do them. Especially the subtractions.…
Thanks, I'll do just that. – Neil
Thanks Kyle, I guess there's no easy way to fix it. It seems like an odd bug because most humanoids and robots etc, have objects like hands and feet that need to be mirrored, and I and I'm sure others use the command a lot. – Neil
Chris, It's algorithm. Sorry, I guess I've spent too much time in Computer Science classes. – Neil
Explode IPAS is good for making the pieces of your object fall all around, but most explosions have huge bursts of fire. There are many, many ways to do this, but personally, I use Magic from Digimation and make the particles glow with LenzFx Aura. I also have an example…
#Backwards Bumps
Message #193021
Just something that's been bothering me for a while. If I mirror an object which has mapping coordinates and has a bump map applied, the mirrored object seems to have the bumps going in instead of out. Is the mirror command flipping the mapping normals or something? Have I just…
If you don't think you're ready to show it yet, don't worry. I know it takes time to get used to a new program. WB is just an ongoing interest of mine. If anything cool is produced, I'm sure you'll upload it anyway. – Neil
I agree. Photoshop allow you to do masks, maybe they should create a format that compresses all areas that aren't masked, and remain intact everywhere else. That format wouldn't be called JPEG anymore, but it's a neat idea for someone to think about sometime. – Neil
> sample animations I can upload as well < Please do. – Neil
I only use Jpg for two things, compressing a picture that will be used as a texture in a not so prominant place, and uploading to this forum. Maybe my eyes are just really waked, but I can tell immediately if something's been JPG'd, Just look at an area in…
#Head Article
Message #192685
Could you possibly post a message saying what issue of Planet Studio that article will be in (Now or later if you don't know). I'm just gettng a subscription now, and I'd hate to miss it. Thanx. – Neil
You can also use Photoshop to make something seemless, using the offset filter. It's slower than KPT, but more people have Photoshop. – Neil
Thanx – Neil
#Refraction + Reflection
Message #192312
Just a quick question. Can you use the refraction mapping IPAS with normal reflection so you can distort your reflections. Or does refraction only work with transparent materials? – Neil
How cheap? E-Mail me the price if you would be so kind. – Neil 102226,3566
Ok, thanks anyway. Maybe if I get the script extensions I'll send you a message. Well actually, maybe if I get the extensions, I'll be able to do it myself. – Neil
I have the script IPAS built into 3ds4 and that's it. If it's enough, I'd love a script. If not, ah well. Thanks in advance… – Neil
I was asking a question more specific than your first one, I wasn't answering it. Apparently, there is no IPAS that will do it. Ah well, maybe with MAX. – Neil
I'm sure it would, but my scripting knowledge is at present limited. Anyone nice enough to do it and post it to Cserve? – Neil
#Rename IPAS
Message #191711
Is there an IPAS out there that takes a choosen number of objects (like a few hundred of them) and renames all of them to a prefix (like Object) followed by a number (In the form Object01, Object02, etc). Or maybe there' s a script. If it doesn't exist, maybe…
For that matter, is there an IPAS that creates lightbeams that are visible without having to create that selfilluminated cone that follows the light around. – Neil
Call 1-800-525-2763 and ask for the closest place to where you live that sells student copies of 3DS4. It seems to average at about $700. Good Luck. – Neil
Thanks Edwin. I just really find the Boolean engine in 3DS to be a bit limiting and it crashes to often (of course I'm asking it to do ridiculous things). Hope to hear from you about Scalpel upgrades. – Neil
To All MAGIC users
Message #191110
To all those participating in discussions of MAGIC, take a peak in the IPAS library in a day or so. I just uploaded a magic explosion. Tell me what you think. By the way, the glittering effect on the test letters was done using Yost Group's HiLight filter from Disk…
Kevin, There are a few programs made by VRLI that lets you see the surface detail of the moon, mars and a few other planets. You can take snapshots of these, save em as gifs, and use them as bump/texture maps. That's how I make all of my planet mapping.…
Thanks Edwin, but I've already been using that technique to make the cookie-Cutter cutting. What I was refering to was non linear cuts, like sphere shaped or curved cuts. Still an excellent program, keep me advised on upgrades. Are they free or do we have to pay for any upgrades?…
I've seen it and I own Scalpel. It's great for making linear cuts, but it would be even better if you made it so it could do cookie-cutter type cutting. Just having straight cuts is good, and it helps me a lot, but a larger cariety of scalpel types would…
Mike, Since you're looking for more suggestions, here's a few. You might know about Fiber Factory for the toaster. Instead of just straight hair, wavy hair, curly hair, hair blowing in the wind, have a whole routine that lets you style the hair (like going to a barber). I'm sorry…
Ernie, I bought LenzFx during Siggraph (I wasn't actually there) and was told Inferno will come in the mail within a week of the release date. If it doesn't, call Digimation and give 'em hell. – Neil
Thanks, I know about the other bubbles IPAS. I just hopped that I hadn't spent my money unwisely at Digimation for that routine. – Neil 102226,3566
#Bubbles by Digimation
Message #189032
I recently bought bubbles and magic from digimation. In magic, you can assign the IPAS to a cube, move around a cube and the glittering effect will trail behind. This avoids the need to make a Shaped Object (Those with the program will understand). In bubbles, you still need to…
I'd be interested in this Planet Studio magazine. Who do I contact for a subscription? – Neil 102226,3566
#Calling Schreiber
Message #188867
Is it ever permittable to buy just one or two routines from the Yost-Group IPAS boutiques for less than the price of the whole package? (Ex. Just buy Scatter from Disk 6 instead of buying the whole thing). – Neil 102226,3566
You're probably right, Ah well, here goes some of my money again. But it's so damn fun. – Neil 102226,3566
Ok, 3DS is at the top, and maybe 30 copies isn't just a trickle. We'll see how many heads WB will turn. – Neil 102226,3566
