Message #52651
Dave, This may be a bit late, but make sure you have enough drives available, e.g., set lastdrive=Z in config.sys. –ed

PAS & Beethoven
Message #52647
Gary, I'm in a worse fix yet with MM Beethoven – can't get the program to see the CDROM (Pioneer Multiplatter, DRM-604X). Any ideas? Thanks –ed
Thanks Dave, will try (though i hate to give up more real memory). –ed
Jack, You're right about ST:M – though it was not causing problems with Groliers, it did hurt video in some games my daughter likes (esp. Mission to Mars). Current system (after major thrash) is unstable with Stealth anyway… Thanks –ed
Glen, I talked to Groliers tech support, and they recommended changing irq on mvsound.sys line to Q:5. That totally locked my system, and, apparently did something bizarre, perhaps damaging other hardware, as my primary (esdi) harddrive cannot be seen when boot from floppy. Still no sound through the PAS from…
Microsoft Bookshelf
Message #900
Herman, MS does have a 1993 version, that requires Win 3.1 (don't think the new version is available for DOS) – what's new is some multimedia, updated Atlas (probably now our of date), and 1993 Almanac. You can either call MS (they do have an 800 customer service #) or…
Grolier's DOS no Aud PAS
Message #879
Using Grolier's MultiMedia Encyclopedia, 1992, for DOS 5, in pioneer DRM-604X multiplatter drive, 33 mhz 386 system, DOS 5.0, qemm 6.02, PAS-16 (irq=7, dma=3, SB emulation default irq=5, dma=1). Unable to get sound via sound card – presence or absence of sndbk12.sys (and its interrupt and dma specs) makes no…
Jack, Afraid that might be the case. Will try. Thanks –ed
604X nogo Groliers audio
Message #52283
Glen, Thanks. However, the audio NEVER worked, with or without the sndblk12 device. Will try and let you know. –ed
Dave, I uploaded the new pioneer drivers as ver111.exe in May or early June. Should be in this lib or hardware lib. Things seem to be going fine except now i can't get either motion or sound from Grolliers Multimedia Encyclopedia (for DOS 5) – was able to get motion…

James, Unforunately, no such simple fi. However, new PAS-16 drivers (from PAS BBS, now uploaded in this forum as well as PAS forum) seem to solve problem. Thanks –ed
Hans, Great improvement with ver111.exe dl's from {Pioneer BBS). Thanks –ed
Unfortunately, fix is not so easy. All cdroms face up. –ed thanks
DAK CDMENU w Pioneer 604

I had been using the DAK BSR cdrom drive for a coule of years, Recently upgraded to Pioneer DRM-604X multiplatter drive/changer. Is it possible to path the CDMENU program to allow it to access multiple drive letters (S; -X::?)? If so could you email me a patch, or let me…
Pioneer DRM-604X NoGoDOS
Message #49146
Have just connected a Pioneer DRM-604X multiplatter CDROM drive to my system, and cannot read any cdroms, despite using ones which worked on my prior BSR/Sony (DAK) drive: Sci Am Med, MS Bookshelf, US History, Toolworks World Atlas, among others. 1st drive produces CDR 101 Error reading Drive S: Other…

#SCSI CDROM for ProAudioS
Message #20780
Have just gotten a ProAudioSpectrum card. Would appreciate recommendations for an external CDROM that can run from the SCSI port of the PAS card, and will also meet MPC standards. Wouldn't mind one that came with encyclopedia thrown in, since my encyclopeida CD has died (scratched?), and my daughter uses…
#Questions on DAK package
Message #14176
Bryan, Am quite happy with my DAK CDROM (nearly a year now). Some hard questions: Can the DAK "BSR" run from a usual scsi port (as on Pro Audio Spectrum sound card), or must it use the sony card that comes with it? Also, daisy chaining other cdroms (not sony)?…
Bryan, I've been consistently able to get through to DAK tech support for last two days – both numbers. Initially, no answer after about twenty rings, then always busy. Perhaps someone here can spot problem: config.sys device = c:\qemm\qemm386.sys ram rom x=b000-b0ff X=c000-c800 x=f000-ffff BREAK=ON BUFFERS=2 FILES=8 LASTDRIVE=Z Stacks=0,0 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM…
MSCDEX loaded high
Message #13734
Andrew, Can you post your debug code to allow mcsdex (ver what?) to run with dos 5 without setver? This would help alot of us out. Thanks in advance –ed
Damon, What version now? Thanks –ed
Tom, Would be interested in a bit more detail on your two CDROM's – particularly given the relatively reasonable prices involved. As an academic physician, i might not be too interested in "Vital Signs" unless to do a review for a mag (med, ed, or computer). Annabel's Dream sounds interesting,…

Message #13677
I'm using the DAK sony cdrom, with sony interface board. Now am unable to access STW Illuistrated Encyclopedia. Have tried using setver 4.00 and setver 3.30 with no effect. Other CDROM's run fine from menu. However, whenever i call Encyclopedia, I get initial STW screen and then am kicked back…
#CD's cost too much
Message #13630
Tom, The number of CDROM drives is expanding exponentially. By claiming all this BS about high cost, you are pricing yourself out of business. If HoughtonMiflin wants to extort you for a dictionary, why not go to meriam webster or someone else? Once they realize they're losing business, they'll come…
#CD's cost too much
Message #13629
Daivd, If the copyright owner want's too much, someone will comeout with the same material cheaper and the copyright owner will get squat, since i, along with most others, will buy from someone else. I think pc users, particularly those with good hardware and who are adding CD-ROM's are too…
#Software bundles?
Message #13628
Bryan, When #3 and #4? Titles in them? Are surveying users for what they'd like? It'd be great if you offered extra caddies as well. I'd vote for offering "Heaven and Hell" as well as some of the game packs, as well as NEC font library – though with lots…
