Car Morph Effect

I agree, the information gained by the experience of the other forum members is invaluable. Oh, and I'm just an New Yorker getting over the shock of moving to SF! Andrew
You are right of course, the issue is that there are few software drivers to use in a test of the current 3D graphics boards. I would enjoy a magazine that covers a mix of 3D hardware, technique and critique. There is always an interest in coverage of hardware choices,…
Yes, I had the feeling it wouldn't work with AXP's. I spoke to David from Digimation and he explained that Lenzfx uses coordinate data unavailable with AXP's. An Alpha mask will probably work.
***** I got mine at Barnes & Noble ( an L.A. bookstore) ***** LA Bookstore? B&N may be the Starbucks of the book business, but I feel it's important to defend the concept that New York is the center of the universe and point out that B&N is, at its…
#Lenzfx2: NO Glow w/Skin
Message #195050
The title of this message says it all. Glow does not work with Skin objects, although I have a feeling it has to do with the nature of how Skin objects are created at render time. Say it ain't so. I'm happy with the Focus stuff, which is really why…
I noticed the same problem with my MGA Imp+ 4mg card. The card had never given me any problems before I loaded the 1.0.7.p1 drivers. I switched back to 1.0.6.p1, and the 2 second pause while switching between modules went away. The lastest version of the Vibrant drivers were supposed…
Martin, You're right, I had to copy a couple of extra files from the cd. I approached this NT installation as a test, so flying by the seat of my pants at 2 am seemed appropriate. I couldn't bring myself to go to bed until it worked, and I didn't…
Martin, I should have waited to check my information, the two files that you need to copy from the i386 directory on the cd-rom are: HALMPS.DLL NTKRNLMP.EXE You should make backup copies of the following files and then copy over them with the above files: HAL.DLL NTOSKRNL.EXE I advised you…
I agree that reinstalling is safer, but it does work as I did it without a problem.
Martin, I've been playing with NT also, and ran across the exact same situation when adding a second Pentium processor. My answer did come from the NT forum on CIS, I'm not at my desk right now and don't have access to the notes. There are two ways to handle…
Heck, why stop with snapshot camera silliness, what we need are entire meshes to replicate artschool, photo major, intro to photography images. Let's see, "my nude girlfriend", "myself in a mirror", "my dormroom", "random flash of people in a dark room at a party (not drunk)", and the same scene…
If you read the messages from Hash, they specifically point out that they are not shipping a release version of the software. If existing users of A:M wish to upgrade and take their chances as beta testers then don't expect everything that is packaged with release versions of the software,…
re: Alias Software – joining of two surfaces Are you thinking of the fillet function? That happens to be one of my favorite features of PowerAnimator.
I can't wait for grouping! I agree using colors is far easier to visualize the effect of each ball. Also, it should be pointed out to anyone overwhelmed by a 600 ball model, that "hide objects" is a very useful command in any 3D program. I'm working on a character's…
What is the current version? I've got 1.01b. Andrew.
>>>Meanwhile, I just got my new version of Metaballs today and have a hot >>>date with my computer . . . ta! Did you just get a new version of the MetaReyes metaballs from Schreiber? -wish-listing in SF, -Andrew
The Diamond is a more recent addition to one of my machines, and after using it with Premiere 4.0 for a solid two days, I would have to recommend it over the Matrox. Much better performance.
Thanks Brian, I changed my emm386 settings and that corrected the memory bug. Andrew.
I have both, the Diamond Stealth 64 w/4meg vram, and the Matrox Impression+ w/4meg vram. I had a problem with the Impression and 3DS with one of my pentiums, but that disappeared after I replaced the Opti PCI motherboard for an Intel PCI motherboard. They both work well, and are…
Network Help
Message #154212
—– …WFW can be used for 3D Studio network rendering. —– I tried following your advice for network rendering with WFW and 3DS4, but things didn't quite work out. I run "net use" then try to run 3DS, but pharlap gives me a processor exception error and crashes the system.…
I think I posted this to someone else here, but here is my experience with the MGA Impression Plus/PCI (4meg vram) and Vibrant drivers 1.0.5.p1: p90 w/Award Bios + Opti PCI = does not work p90 w/Ami Bios + Intel PCI = works fine Since I have the board working…
I spent a lot of time at the Alias booth at SIGGRAPH and CES, but I don't think I've put in enough time on PowerAnimator to talk about rendering times. The hair and particle effects are easy to use and very powerful, but as with all special effects, especially Wavefront's…
One of my P90's started out with a similar motherboard: PCI/ISA/VLB slots. I could never get the MGA card to work consistently with 3ds on that board. Switched to an Intel motherboard with Neptune PCI chipset, everthing works fine. Andrew.
All I can say is that I have the Impression Plus working with 3dsr4 and a Nanao F750i monitor. I use the MGA drivers supplied by Vibrant, release 1.05.P1. The driver is simply called MGA, and is near the bottom of the list. I have it running 1280×1024 at 256…
Great news on upcoming texture methods for v2.0. I just came back from CES in Las Vegas, don't know if anyone else was there, but my metaballs animation was playing on the front stage of the Casio booth for 4 days. Andrew.
I'm using the vibrant driver shipped with 3DSr4. My card is the Matrox Impression Plus with the Athena chipset. I have noticed something very peculiar. If I run Windows, exit and then run 3DS, the Matrox card will not work. If I run 3ds from a fresh boot, no problem.…
I agree with you about Imagine's modeler, which has not really changed much since the original Amiga 1.0 release of January 1991. I never liked the animation interface or the rendering quality. Yes, bones, particles, displace and some other modeling features are built-in, but the fact that they wrote their…
I have the Impression Plus 4 meg and use the MGA driver supplied by Vibrant. Andrew.
>> (and with the DOF capability of Aaron's new doodad… I must have missed this little item. What doodad has Aaron produced to help eliminating hard edges? I get most of my jobs because I work so hard to avoid "computer edges" . Andrew.
Thanks for the info on version 2.0. Would the "auto mapping" feature allow me to place a word or image on a metaball? The hierarchy and multi-layering features sound very useful. Metaballs just paid for itself on a countdown animation that I did for someone, but they were hoping to…
I have your Metaballs modeler and it is very fast and easy to use. I had a bit of confusion when installing onto my slave machines, but after a couple of tries everything works. I would like to map a texture onto the animated metaball, so far no luck. I…
That was all the information I needed. Thanks. I'm using a new video editing house, and I realized how much the old place really coddled me. Andrew.
Thanks. That's exactly what I need. Andrew.
#NTSC aspect ratio
Message #143114
I usually render my images at 640 x 480 and then record them to tape. I was just noticing that some video devices use 720 x 484 or even larger. What pixel aspect ratio would I use to render at the higher resolutions? Thanks Andrew.
You are right about the memory conflict. I used to have some extra settings with emm386 that worked with the 486, but not with the Pentium. Thanks, Andrew.
Thanks. I had the odi drivers running, but it turned out that emm386.exe does not like the same settings on a pentium that work on a 486. Who knows. Andrew.
#3ds4 network problems
Message #142214
This is sort of a shot in the dark, as this really isn't a problem with 3DS, but with my network hardware. If anyone has suggestion, I could really use them. I've just set up a new pentium 90 and there is one rather frustrating problem. When the network drivers…
Heh. There's nothing in the manual that says "NO EXPERIMENTING". Andrew.
#Skin w/beveled text
Message #141637
I'd like to loft as a single object a five letter word. If I do not use any beveling, skin works fine. If I bevel the letters however, skin tries to connect the letters, and produces a self-intersection error. Am I doing something wrong, or does the bevel function do…
I had a similar problem with .loc files. My 3ds process directory is on the network, and I had marked the files read-only + shareable. When I changed them back to read-write + shareable, everything worked fine again. So, anyone, what's the consensus, process directory on local machines? Or is…
Lantastic network
Message #134650
My big, end of the year purchase will be a second machine to act as a rendering slave. Yes, I've discovered the joy of having an extra machine working on a project while I'm able to continue on to other jobs. I plan to use a peer-to-peer network such as…
3DS *does* read the DXF files from A:M without problems. Andrew.

I have a copy of Understanding Imagine 2.0 if anybody is interested. Send me email.
re: Premiere/Win 4.0 Adobe may have announced the product, but I wouldn't bother calling them for sales info, as noone there even knows it exists. Figure November at the earliest.
#Decals on Skin objects
Message #119237
I can't seem to get this through my head: how do I place a decal on an object that uses the skin.axp? I've read everything, and tried using the UV offsets in the Materials Editor, but the decal always ends up in the same place. My goal is to place…

Will you be actually selling Interchange for Windows? See you in Orlando, Andrew.
I noticed your question about using a Wacom with 3DS. I suggest loading the Wacom dos mouse driver and not using the adi tablet interface. I have an older 6×9 tablet that works very well with the supplied wmouse.com, leaving 3DS config set to 'mouse'. The wacom mouse driver does…
I checked out the texture map. That was really useful because I'm experimenting with photographs of faces, using painter to create the high/low spots. Thanks. Andrew.
Glenn, that head is amazing, all from a displacment map, that's all the reason I need to get the new IPAS routines. I'd love to see the map that you painted for this mesh, did you paint something that wrapped all the way around the sphere?
