Yep, Clapton and Duane Allman both used Champs on the LAYLA album. You can hear the Champ on lots of blues and rock 'n' roll recordings from the '50s and early '60s. It's a great little amp for bedroom practice or recording…you can really drive the output tube without destroying…
Steve, Your scenario sounds more plausible than most of the others I've seen. But even if some company or other does end up possessing the late C='s assets, with or without Uncle Irv in charge, I can't see that it makes any difference to me as an Amiga owner. Even…
Steve, I guess I could see some (maybe a lot of) merit in Bryce's angle if C= were merely filing for bankruptcy. But liquidation is (I gather…I really know nothing about this stuff) a whole 'nother ballgame. Sounds to me like dissolution rather than reorganization. I certainly agree with Bryce…
Ted, No, CPU is most definitely not a SetPatch replacement! CPU gives you some control over your system's MMU (if it has one) and allows you to turn on and off the instruction and data caches of those processors that have such features. Put SetPatch back in your startup-sequence (at…
Mike, I actually think the new SetPatch is a good move on C='s part. Looks like they're acknowledging that a lot of folks are waiting for AmigaOS 3.1 before they'll spend money on an upgrade. Now, if they can get 3.1 out the door in a reasonable amount of time….…
Dale, I understand what you're saying. Gold Disk has done a similar thing to C= by just releasing PPage 3.1, a bug-fixed version of PPage 3.0, even though PPage 4.0 (now 4.1) has been on the market for months. My impression of AmigaOS 2.1, though, is that *it* is primarily…
Clint, >>"Most creative people that I have met are slobs like me."
Bob, Isn't it kinda strange that C= has just now released an improved SetPatch to be used with AmigaOS 2.04 when the *2.1* upgrade has been out for months? Seems to me 2.04 should've been left behind when 2.1 came out…. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
A1200 & MBX1200z 4 Sale
Message #103980
For Sale: 1) Amiga 1200HD/40. NTSC version. Mint condition. Contains 2 megs of RAM and a factory-installed 40 meg hard drive. Package includes composite video adaptor, disks, manuals (A1200 User's Guide, Workbench 3.0, AmigaDOS, ARexx and Hard Drive User's Guide), and warranty card (never got around to sending it in).…
Steve, Well said. I find it real hard to talk about C= without boiling over, but you're right…just bashing away isn't productive. I hope those in charge at C= respond to the present financial situation in a productive and creative manner. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Brad, I dunno about that. C= has made no promises that any current machine will be compatible with an AAA (or whatever they decide to call it) chipset. Hope I'm wrong, but I bet AAA will require a whole new machine. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Paul, >>"Does it add more overscan than attainable w/ the current drivers, though?"
Paul, Put my name on the list too. I'd be happy to contribute to a group letter. Provided, of course, I think it's constructive rather than just critical. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Paul, The newer monitor drivers give you much better control over screen postitioning and amount of overscan. No more fiddling with monitor controls when switching screen modes. As to when 3.1 might be expected…can't say. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Michael, I agree with Jonathan…there is no excuse for prospective upgraders to PageStream 3.0 to still be running under AmigaOS 1.3. Forget about 1.3 support; when it comes to serious systems (the kind likely to be running legitimate copies of PgS) 1.3 is dead and gone. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Richard, I suspect you won't see the new monitor drivers until C= releases AmigaOS 3.1. Right now only developers have them. -Dave (via AutoPilot)

Bob, Well, I suppose you could look at mode promotion as deinterlacing. But I figure we may as well get the terminology right. 😉 What mode promotion really does is substitute a non-interlaced mode for an interlaced one. No actual deinterlacing takes place. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Leonard, That is bizarre that PPage 4 can't find your bitmapped fonts in FONTS:. It must be a configuration-dependent bug; like I've said, it didn't show up on my A3000 or my A1200. Wish I had the time to be a beta tester…. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Leonard, Since you mention the Bold and Italic versions of Times…. PPage's method of handling font families is odd. If you use Soft-Logik's TypeSmith or Gold Disk's own CreateFont utility to convert a Type 1 font family (say Adobe Caslon Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic) to Compugraphic format, you…
Leonard, You're right…PPage does build references to FONTS:_Bullet_Outlines in the if.fnt file. Seeing as it can't use the Workbench CG fonts, I wonder why? PPage's method of handling CG fonts is strange anyway. The .dat and .metric files are redundant; the info each contains is also kept in the corresponding…
Michael, Hmmm…I'm not sure *what* I was getting at when I said PageStream's numerical coordinate editing was more cumbersome than PPage's. 🙁 Lack of sleep or something…. I retract that comment. In PPage I do like being able to double-click on a box to bring up the editing window. I…
Michael, Compared to PPage, I can't think of much PageStream lacks. There are many areas where, IMO, PageStream is superior. Font handling and management, for example. One thing I do like about PPage, though, is the ability to specify the amount of spacing between paragraphs. In PPage 3.0 you had…
Leonard, PPage can't use the Workbench Compugraphic fonts directly. In addition to the CG .type (aka .lib) files in FONTS:_Bullet_Outlines, PPage requires a .dat file for each font and a .metric file for each font family. TypeSmith, Soft-Logik's new font editing software, can create the .dat and .metric files if…
Ron, Sorry, but Gold Disk is convinced we are too stupid to edit their wonderous .INI file. They are apparently also convinced we have no business moving their files around on our hard drives after installing PPage. Personally, after a particularly joyous DTP session last night, I have erased PPage…
Karl, Quoting (without permission) from the "AGA Graphics Supplement": "The standard VGA horizontal scan rate is 31.5 kHz. Most, but not all, VGA-only monitors can also display the 27 kHz scan-doubled modes, DBLNTSC and DBLPAL. "If you are attempting to use a VGA monitor with the DBL or MULTISCAN modes,…
Brian, Your posting has me a little puzzled. I have my A1200's Workbench screen set up for MULTISCAN:Productivity at 640×480. With VGAOnly installed I get a much "tighter" display, albeit a smaller one, than without VGAOnly. There's no scrolling involved…the whole screen is displayed. If part of your Workbench screen…
Mark, Thanks for the CG info. I think I'll avoid CG fonts in the future…good thing I don't have too many of 'em. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Karl, VGAOnly won't have any effect on SuperHiRes modes, as they sync below VGA rates. Try running Workbench in DBLNTSC (640×400 non-interlaced) with VGAOnly, then remove it from devs/monitors and reboot. Put Workbench in DBLNTSC again…you should see a difference. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Karl, Your A4000 will run VGAOnly as long as it's in your Monitors drawer at startup. Not sure if this is documented anywhere or not. Like I said, it's something of a kludge. -Dave (via AutoPilot Hands On)
Karl, VGAOnly isn't really a monitor driver. It's a utility that bumps up the horizontal scan rates of the drivers, putting them closer to the normal VGA rates. Some VGA and multiscanning monitors aren't happy with a horizontal sync rate of 29 kHz of so (which is what you normally…
Mark, Thanks for the response re. TypeSmith and CG font kerning pair info. Is the kerning info not avaZ+K^6e to TypeSmith by design or by accident? 8^) Hinting control wo] le a nice feature to add in the next rev. of TypeSmith. (Along with support for the TrueType format!) I…
Mark, Thanks for the info. I guess the display fonts like Columbia and TomHudson don't really need kerning info, although I could always create my own kerning pairs for them with TypeSmith…. Another question. What do you folks think of the Compugraphic font format? I've heard from a number of…
Clint, I didn't experience any serious problems with VP 3.0, just the Interlace button thing and a few others. I render to IFF24 and then convert down to HAM8 (or whatever) with ImageMaster, so I didn't notice the HAM8 rendering problems. I commend you for your attitude and for your…
Jeff, I certainly wouldn't call VistaPro 3.0 "bug ridden". I ran into a few minor problems with it, but nothing serious. Of course, I don't have DCTV so I can't say if the DC*W-specific 3eatures work or not. As for updating to the latest version, Clint has been doing that…
Michael, Thanks. Is the font/clipart sale still going on? -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Clint, Thanks for sending the update! I won't bug you about the menus anymore, except to say that I hope you'll consider "fixing" 'em in a future VP release. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
John, >>"ALL of the beta testers complained…."
Clint, I'd also like to take advantage of the VP 3.0 bug fix offer. Sending E-Mail would be cool. I run VP on my A1200 (with MBX-1200), so the .881 version is the one I'll need. As long as I've got you…I have a minor quibble re. VP 3.0. (Sorry.)…
Greg, Yes, I have "Rebounds". Lovely stuff. I'm particularly fond of the Rosauro piece and the one by Miyoshi. When I was a teenager I hated orchestral and chamber music. Typical adolescent rebellion, I guess. I was more into guitar feedback and such. 8^) But the older I get, the…
#TypeSmith Question
Message #52875
Michael, A TypeSmith question for you. When I load a metrics file for one of the Soft-Logik fonts supplied with PageStream (Columbia, for instance), no kerning pair data appears. Is this as it should be? I also get no kerning pair data when I import Compugraphic fonts. Adobe Type 1…
Greg, Evelyn is indeed a superb percussionist. Being a fan of drumming and percussion, particularly African and Brazilian, I've been aware of her work for a number of years. Let her know I've got all her albums. 8^) I recently saw a profile of Evelyn on the local public (no…
Gracia, I know what you mean concerning HPPERIPH. It breaks me up to read posts from people threatening to return their LaserJet 4s because the internal Courier is too light. 8^) I like the new Courier myself, but I didn't spend nearly $2k on the printer to admire (or complain…
Philip, I use WB 2.1 on my A3000 and A2000, and 3.0 on my A1200. My A3000 gets by far the most use; therefore, I use 2.1 the most. IMO, the vast majority of Amigans still running WB 1.3 are A500 or A1000 owners who use their machines primarily for…
Gracia, I don't think that form letter, in and of itself, is such a bad idea. However, as far as I can tell it's not a component of any overall marketing strategy. Commodore needs a comprehensive, creative marketing plan. Then they need the guts to implement it and stick with…
Greg, As you imply, the Amiga is a powerful platform in spite of C='s marketing incompetence. I occasionally entertain thoughts of adding a clone or Mac to my computing arsenal , but I can't imagine giving up my Amigas (I own three) or even relegating them to second class status.…
Greg, There's no question that the Amiga, from an engineering and system software perspective, is a superb platform. This is largely what has kept the machine alive to this point. There's also no question that from a marketing perspective, the Amiga is a complete disaster. "Commodore marketing" is an oxymoron.…
Brian, There is currently no monitor driver for an 800×600 non-interlaced display. Whether the hardware is capable of such a display is another matter. Even if it is, you'll need a monitor capable of scanning at a 48 kHz (or so) horizontal scan rate (assuming a 72 Hz vertical rate)…
Jim, "What does a monitor need to do to handle 1024 x 768 non-interlaced?" It needs to be able to scan horizontally at around 49 kHz (assuming a vertical scan rate of 60 Hz). I don't know for sure, but I imagine the 1960 maxes out at 36 kHz or…
Denny, I was at the local CompUSA last week, and saw a 21" Sony monitor hooked up to a Mac Quadra. Oooh, the display was beautiful! Sharp as a tack, too. When I win the Lotto I'll definitely buy one. -Dave (via AutoPilot)
Gracia, Hmmm…I think maybe the computer gremlin who used to live in my Amiga has now taken up residence in yours. 8^) I haven't seen a recoverable alert with PPage since around the time I installed AmigaOS 2.1 in my A3000. Perhaps that's just a coincidence…don't know. At any rate,…
