#Change of Address
Message #185449
Jonas, What is the best way to confirm that Adesk has my change of address? We have a couple of registered copies of 3DS and a copy of ACAD R13. Some announcements form Adesk are delivered to our new address (including 3DS Party tickets!) but some still come to our…
I have a Gateway Pentium and have had more problems than you would care to imagine. Right now I am writting you this on my 486 because my Pentium died. Some of the problems can be attributed to the Intel/PCI chip set. You might want to wait and let them…
Thanks for the reply Jonas, I use to use QEMM back in the days of R1 and R2. In those days Gateway 486 VLB systems would have bios shadow problems when using more than 16MB of RAM causing performance to be cut in half. That problem ended with the newer…
#Pentium 90 lockup
Message #136476
I was wondering if anyone has experienced system lock-up while rendering with R4. I have a Gateway 2000 P90 with 40MB running Dos 6.22 and it locks-up while rendering in field mode after about 10-20 frames. The lock-up occurs when the red bar is halfway across the screen– not while…
John, I'll have to check on the NFS on my Indigo. I remember when I bought it that they wanted to sell me NFS, but that might have been for the PC. Anyway, thank you very much for your input. I don't know a lot about networks, but I'm learning…
Greg: You're probably right about PC-NFS. However I have 20 PCs here, of which only 6 are used for graphics (i.e. 3DS). The non-graphics people like the windows interface of Lantastic and probably won't want to change. All I want to do is occasionally convert some .RGB files and send…
Kevin, >> I see you already got some suggestions for PC conversion software. Is there some reason you can't use SGI's supplied RGB2TGA utility and convert on the SGI first?
John, Thanks for the info. From the responses I've gotten so far – there is Image Alchemy and Conversion Artist to check out. Sounds like I won't have too much problem getting my files converted. Most of my work is forensic so I don't really need D1 quality– so I've…
John, >>Conversion Artist will do it. I use it very often
Martin >>image alchemy will convert .sgi files to anything you like
#Convert SGI .RGB to .TGA
Message #128670
Does anyone know of a conversion program for the PC that will convert Silicon Graphics native .RGB files to Targa files. I found one for the Mac but nothing on PC. Any help would be appreciated. -Parris
Casey, Is this spine more accurate than your last one? We have your old Spine-H and have been a bit frustrated with it, since it is not completely accurate. If this one is better, do you have an upgrade policy? -Parris Ward Biodynamics Engineering, Inc.
I will forward you my number via E-Mail. As to config.sys setup, I've set up a startup menu in DOS 6.2 where I can choose diferent configurations such as 3DS, Windows, …etc. I don't run Smartdrv when using 3DS. -Parris
Stephen, Sounds like you're getting really good performance. I haven't really rendered that much yet . My projects are typically around 2MB with another 2-15 MB of texture maps. Rendering, with IPAS routines running, typically consumes about 20-40MB ram. After my next big project I will have more reliable benchmarks.…
Will do. My system also has had occasional problems recognizing sentinel pro with the printer turned off. It is just strange that it is not consistant. -Parris
I wish we had large expense accounts!!!!!!! I'd love to help you develop such and IPAS routine. Anything I can do to help. I don't know how helpful EDC would be since they are developing an itegrated simulation/animation program themselves–but it only runs on SGI. -Parris
I really haven't done a scientific study on this. I have a couple of 486-66 machines with 40mb of ram, a few 486-50s, and now a Pentium-90 with 40mb of ram. What took me around 3 minutes a frame on the 486-66s now takes about a minute on the Pentium.…
John, I've thought of doing that myself. It's a great idea. I'm sure you could sell it to quite a few reconstructionists. I know I would buy a copy! -Parris
Tyler, Our company has done a bit of FE modeling in the past. In fact our company president did an FE model of the human brain many years ago. But as you know, that kind of modeling can complicated and tedious. We do not generally use it for litigation for…
Mei-Tien, In the "Advanced CMOS Setup" configuration I set the parameter for DISABLE SHADOW MEMORY SIZE to 64kb and the line below that –DISABLE SHADOW MEMORY BASE to D0000h. Hope that helps. Parris
I had a great one – It was a police butality case though, but this was against the police. I was all excited about putting it on my demo reel. Unfortunately, the case settled for millions of dollars and the condition for the settlement was that I could not show…
Richard, I have a Gateway 90 and have not had problems myself, but I would like to try and duplicate yours. Please tell me how large and complicated is your animation, what IPAS are you using, output resolution, ..etc. Also, how much memory do you have? I have 40 Megs,…
Gary, We have been using our Gateway 90 for almost a month now with no real problems. I did have some memory page frame conflicts initially with my Targa+, but resolved it through tinkering with CMOS parameters. We have used your Tempo and Displace IPAS routines with no problems. We…
James, You and I have/had similar priorities. I've had a 7750 for what must be about 2 years. Never had a problem. Rock solid product. A friend has the JVC '22 series machine and has had it serviced and recalled in a period of six months. In January I took…

It's called Truevision DVR (which is actually the name of the technology) It will be available to developers in September (so they say) and should ship by November. The cost of the maxed-out 64MB version was quoted to me to be around $8,000 retail. A 4MB version persumably will be…
Thanks David, I'll try it! -Parris
James- As I told Kevin, my rendering times were with RAMBIOS.SYS and QEMM installed. I am no expert in tweaking performance from QEMM so I will try some more. But check out the response I got on the Gateway 2000 CIS bulletin board under subj. "Memory Problems." The SysOp said…
Hi Kevin! Your advice is much the same as what I originaly got from Gateway. Running ATI's RAMBIOS.SYS and using QEMM are supposed to help. It does speed up Windows performance and 3DS screen writes, but my rendering performance is still dragging. Maybe I need to tweak QEMM some more,…
Craig, Regarding your buying a Gateway 4DX2-66V, I have one too and have run into an interesting problem which you might not be aware of. I expanded my RAM beyond 16MB so I could render complex geometry faster (without paging to disk). To my surprise, the machine's performance dropped off…

Greg, I know you have other things to do besides adding names to your mailing list, but I'd appreciate it if you would add mine too. Parris Ward Biodynamics Engineering, Inc. 15304 Sunset Blvd. Pacific Palisades, CA 90272 Thanks! -Parris
