A very expensive but complete API is made by Sony called FTR. Although they have an API for the Mac, their emphasis is on Windows. They say the API is mainly for large book publishers (hence the price SRP ~12K) but all the users that have worked it is say…

Ric, Give Tom Santos (the owner or just talk to one of his elves) a call at 415-863-6222. He said he just got three more in but I bought another… The $399 price is for an external for cash/check. The killer news he gave me today was Quadra 950's for…

Their software sells for $595 and $1495 or fairly close to those numbers. The $595 does PC compatible CD's and the higher prices package supports additional features. The software appears to be driven by different internal companies is why I suggested at least checking them out. -dle

You might try Sony's Electronic Publishing Company. I know they have a good PC based package called Multimedia Formatter which they do seem to sell unbundled. -dle

Spoke with Sony yesterday and learned that you can have 2 color label placed on CD-R blanks for free. The catch… it is done in Japan with a 1000 disc minimum. Although at $18 each it did require some consideration. I would be very interested in whatever you find out.…

The price, $399, is a cash price at Macadam in San Francisco. It is their current regular price and they had three or so left two days ago. Credit is something like $419. They ship stuff around the world (literally since they supply a distributor in Aus.) You can give…

I tested this and found that the Apple drivers gave only slightly better performance using the default parameters of CDT. However, you can adjust params with theirs. I used mine under too many that it didn't make sense and the 300 is fast enough for me. I did this using…

Robert, You might be surprised to hear (as I was) that the Apple 300 (Sony CDU-8003) drive is now available retail for ~$399. I just got another one to replace my antique 3301 after hearing that price. Once again, my local dealer beats my June developers pricing… Scary. 🙂 -dle

Richard, After using a CD simulator or your best "seat-of-the-pants" guesstimate, you might consider having the premastering done on a Sony CDW-900E or its equivalent. This professional CD Writer produces a disc that is equivalent to a manufacturer's stack check disc for the price of a consumer one-off disc. We…

Lisa, What do you have your cache in the Memory CP set to? If it is greater than 512K, set it to 384K or 512K. Larger values will severely degrade SCSI performance (3-5 times slower) regardless of CPU/system version. I had a few problems with SpeedyCD and random hangs, never…

Jason, Almost every internally terminated device uses removable inline parts. They are usually found close to where the SCSI cable connects to the drive's electronics. Every drive that I have encountered used two or three parts placed end-to-end. The parts will be socketed and very thin. Carefully remove them and…

A word of warning… never set a cache size of >512K. Regardless of what the default setting may suggest, NEVER set it larger than 512K. This is true for all versions of the Mac OS. I have documented that all SCSI performance is severely impacted by exceptionally large cache sizes.…

They should be available on either MacDev or Macsys forums. The latest version is 4.0.2 and they are part of the Apple CD driver package… unfortunately, I don't think they have them unbundled for separate downloading. Just extract the FFA and associated files and you should be set.
