Can you tell me what I have to do and have to install Workbench from diskettes to a hard drive on a A1200? Thanks for any help.

Dave, Actually, the very easiest way to do that is to put the floppy in the drive and at a CLI prompt type: COPY DF0:#? DH0: all (presuming your HD is known as DH0:) Don

There is a routine to do this about somewhere. I have never had to do this myself so I don't know if it is any good. Where is it? Sorry I can't answer that one. I assume that it is around here somewhere…If you have trouble finding it and wish to give it a go let me know and I'll rustle up a copy for ya. Adrian It's really happening to Ya!

Well, I believe that one of the Amigados 3.0 disks is called Install. Just stick it in, and follow the instalation procedures.

Kim… I wish it were so. I have an A1200 with 3.0 and the 3.0 set of disks. The hard drive got trashed and there was no system to reinstall the operating system other than to go file by file or drawer by drawer. I'm not sure I have yet gotten it straight since I have severe display problems between the A1200 and my A1960 and A1950 monitors. ..Carl

Dealers adding HDs to 1200 systems OUGHT to be providing you with the extra floppies and manuals that go with a HD system. Go talk to your dealer! — Dale L. Larson, Intangible Assets Manufacturing

Dale… Thanks for the suggestion but I purchased my A1200 second hand so have no dealer to go back to. I kept waiting for the release of 3.1 but to no avail. Now the computer seems to have video problems and I don't know who to take it to for a diagnosis. :^( ..Carl

If you have a local dealer, he should be able to help. He may (reasonably) charge for his help. — Dale L. Larson, Intangible Assets Manufacturing

Dale… Nearest dealer is in Maryland (I live in Virginia). Not an insurmontable problem but costly in travel time. I will be going on vacation soon and I may drop it off then with the hope it can be repaired while I am away. ..Carl

One of the floppy disks should be named Install, on the 3.0 disks. There should be 5 disks, labeled Install, Workbench, Fonts, Extras, and Locale. The Install disk should have an English installation program on it. Kim

Kim… Apparently the A1200 I bought used had a hard drive installed by a dealer (80meg) along with the GVP accelerator. The disks with the system do not include an Install disk. ..Carl

Carl, What exactly is your problem? I've only got the back end of this thread. C.C.I. Computer Applications * Thirsk – North Yorkshire – United Kingdom *

Charles… It has two problems really. First of all the computer is and A1200 (just over one year old) with a GVP 030/40mhz accelerator. Problem #1: Since the first day I purchased the computer (used) it has what I refer to as rolling flicker. Similar to interlace flicker but it seems to move from the top of the screen to the bottom and gets noticeably worse when some CPU activity is taking place. Newest drivers haven't resolved this problem. Problem #2: While doing my taxes with an Amiga tax program I used the program to reset the display to interlace. It did something to the display (totally corrupting it and freezing up the computer). When I rebooted the useable area of the screen was shifted over to the right one and a quarter inches (even on the gray boot screen). Nothing I can do recovers that lost screen area. I have three Amigas at home and three different monitors (1950, 1960 and 1080) and it is not the monitor that has the problem. I have never heard of software damaging hardware but it sure appears that is what happened here. I have tried MonEd, new drivers, different monitors, and nothing solves the problem. I wish there was some software that did a diagnostic on the hardware (chips) like I have seen for the old C-64s. Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated. I have heard from some other A1200 owners who are having the same problem. One told me that some A1200's had this problem and C= could fix it but since C= isn't an option anymore I don't know where to go. ..Carl

Well unfortunately I don't have the answer. I was assuming that you had a software fault due to you having a hard disk configured wrongly. But it does sound like hardware problems. Yes some A1200s had display problems but I thought that was only to do with the RF output. I can't see altering the screen display would alter the hardware but worse things are known to have happened. Have you tried the display with some other disk based only software, I assume you have tried all things really. All I can suggest is you try and find some third party (non C=) repair company in the States if this is still possible. I can't imagine just because C= has gone that other companies aren't still working with Amigas. Also a company called Grapevine has a diagnostic program. I'll give you the Address and hope they are still in business: The Grapevine Group Inc. 3 Chestnut Street, Suffern, New York 10901 USA 0101-914-357-2424 (International telephone number) I assume also you are closer to them than me. Other than that I'll try and find the time to give one of our repair companies a call to see if its a professional repair job. If I can find out and it is you may consider trying a UK repair centre. It will cost a little in portage obviously but it shouldn't be too large a sum. Failing this sell it and get a PC 🙁 I'll have your 030 though. Not that I need it (I already have one) but I know a man that does. One (a few) last thing(s), make sure all the boards and whatever else you have in the thing are located properly. Also check that all chips are seating right and no ones dropped any solder where they shouldn't have or cut tracks, dry solder joints. Maybe check the power supply also. That's all I can offer at present. C.C.I. Computer Applications * Thirsk – North Yorkshire – United Kingdom *

Charles… Thanks for the response. Actually I got confused in my threads. <g> There is that other software problem in that someone else had an A1200 but didn't have the install diskette for 3.0. I had replied that I had the same problem (set of 3.0 diskettes but no install diskette). Apparently the HD on my A1200 was installed by a dealer who installed the software but didn't provide the HD installer software, soooo when the drive was trashed it wasn't an easy install and I am not sure I have everything installed correctly (though I am no rank beginner when it comes to the AMIGA). I have been hoping that 3.1 would be released and then this problem would be solved but it doesn't look like 3.1 will ever be released. :^( I have 3 AMIGAS waiting for 3.1. ..Carl

Well I don't know about the install system as mine was installed via the dealer and I've had quite a few crashes requiring a manual install. I also seem to have a few programs or features that don't work as advertised but nothind as serious as yours. Sorry I can't help any further really. It is a funny and difficult problem however, especially if some software can open a full screen. C.C.I. Computer Applications * Thirsk – North Yorkshire – United Kingdom *

Another thought would be the overscan setting. You have all the software that comes with WB 3 I take it. Also is the A1200 setup on WB 3 software and not any earlier WB. Failing that I could maybe pass you a little program that could alter the screen offsets for you, but you would have to reset it everytime you switched on. If it was a hardware problem this may help a little in finding out, as you wouldn't be able to offset the screen back to where it was I imagine. As to the flicker, that hardware for sure. C.C.I. Charles… Yeah I'm pretty convinced it is a hardware problem, at least partially. I have triedthe overscan program and it cannot correct thhhe the problem. In fact it doesn't seem to work properly in that I can make an adjustment in only one direction. The other points to grab don't work. The funny thing is that some programs, AD-Pro comes to mind, reset the screen when they load an image and I get full use of the screen. ImageMaster R/t doesn't work nor do most other programs. Very frustrating since I purchased this machine to do image processing for my Fargo Primera printer. ..Carl
