Hello all,
I just recievedmy new WARP ENGINE 040 and after some
time in dry dock our 4000 is now back together again.
My problem is I just installed a new Quantum Prodrive
540LPS. The WARP ENGINE SCSI Toolbox recognizes the
drive but doesn't report back the correct amount of
blocks or cylinders. The result is the 540MB ending up
a -94MB drive (fancy that).
I did not get any specs with the drive so I am dead
there. I did try the WARP's SCSI Setup which just locks
the system up when you select initialize disk.
The Amiga 3.0 Harddrive toolbox is worthless because it
doesn't even recognize the harddrive as being there. I have
check ID's but thats OK.
My current configuration is as follows :
120 IDE Drive
540 SCSI Drive (at ID #6)
3401B SCSI CD-ROM (at ID #5)
Warp Engine SCSI Controller at ID #7
Any ideas, comments, suggestions are welcome. If anyone also
has the specs for the drive above they would be appreciated
too.

Shawn: I used the Warp Engines SCSITools utility to format and partition a
SyQuest cartdridge and didn't have any problems. First, make sure the last
device on the SCSI chain is terminated. Any other drives in the middle of
the chain should be unterminated. To use 3.0's HDToolBox, make sure the
Icon's tooltype has the entry:
SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=warpdrive.device
Let me know how you do with this, and if it still doesn't work, we will
see what else might be happening.

Just got it up and running but what a headache!! Not to mention
froma 540MB Quantum thats supposed to be that formatted it really
became 515MB after format, big rip off!! Oh well thats SCSI.
What I did is just what you said. I put the SCSI_DEVICE_NAME to
warpdrive.device and it then could format the drive. BUT I did
have to get the drives particulars from QUANTUM.
WARNING, DANGER WILL ROBINSON, I have been told by Macrosystems
that there are a few Quantums like the 540 which are not recognized
by their SCSI controller. The BIOS is sent or read incorrectly and
therefore you geta drive with a negative size. Really Wierd….
Oh well I just started getting everything else going. Thanks for
the info. Do you know of any way to get a better format out of
SCSI drives?? 25MB does seem extreme for a loss. Oh well, The
SS PAW now has full WARP Power Cap'tn.

Great, glad you got it working Shawn! Actually, HDToolBox has the
capability to query the drive for the particulars. Once you are in
HDToolBox, click on "Change Drive Type", next "Define New", and then a
screen should appear that has a button labeled "Read Configuration". It
should read the information from the drive. If it also gives you wierd
numbers for the cylinder's then I would say Quantum is doing something
strange. Make sure you have you have a backup of the drive if you already
have important data on it, because clicking on OK from this point will
erase it.
Many drive manufacturer's will specify the Unformated capacity of the
drive to make it sound bigger <g>.

25MB is almost exactly what you should loose to the 1000 vs 1024 marketing
measurement issue I told you about.

I have always known the formatting would leave me
dissappointed but I keep hoping 🙂

A good deal of what appears to be loss isn't. It is in the "spare sectors
Map". SCSI drives self-test themselves (or can, anyway) and will eithre
"slip sectore" or remap using a jump table any sectore detected as bad to
one taken from the spares list. So, while you may not have direct access
to it, most of the difference is there for your indirect use. And the
larger the dirve, the bigger the "loss".
BTW, with GVP FaaastPrep A 540 came up first time, no trouble. I think
MacroSystems may be blowing a little smoke. Also, if you call Quantum,
their tech support is generally pretty good. If you have a ROM problem on
the controller they generally replace them for free (that is they will
send yuo the ROM to do the replacement for free…).

If you would, please run DiskSpeed on your Warp Drive Quantum and let us
know the numbers.
It should be most interesting, and I hope to get a Warp later this year…

One thing to keep in mind… Drive manufacturers call 1,000,000 bytes a
megabyte. The rest of us call 1024*1024 bytes a megabyte. "The rest of
us" includes AmigaDOS and HDToolBox.
Still, if 3.0 HDToolBox and the Warp SCSI Setup lockup or don't recognize
the drive, you have a problem. Does 3.0 HDtoolbox recognize your CD-ROM
drive? Are you sure you didn't leave a terminator on or off somewhere you
shouldn't have? Could you try another drive in place of the 540 as a
test?
