Michele, Could you give the number to phone to order the books from Canada? I tried the US 800 number from all I got was "cannot call that number from this area code". I now have the numer to call for USA, and for Europe, but not in Canada <g>. Mark K.

Hey Mark… Apparently you can order Michelle's books from Greg Pyros as well… tel: (714) 833 0334…. or FAX: (714) 833 8655. Don't you hate it when those 1-800's don't work from the snowy north… Roger C@V

For Canada, you can call Opamp directly on their regular phone line. The number is (213) 464-4322. Michele

Hi Michele! Got your Card Friday….No Software…Called Keven..Just got the software….We'll be trying to set it up tommorrow. You wouldn't happen to have any more information on that special solder connection would you? Also I've got to read the Operator's Manual and Director Software book over again as right now it's clear as mud. You wouldn't happen to have any specific information on how you had this set up would you? James
#49484From: Michele BousquetJul 13, 1993 7:53 AM
The solder connection should be a duplicate of the connection that was on the card, no tricks involved. it should work as if it weren't there. I know the manual is intense. I wish I could help you but all I seem to remember is that it took me two days to work it all out, then it was simple after that. Magni is pretty good about technical support so maybe they will help you. All I can suggest is that you try something simple first, like just getting the card to output your VGA display, eg. your DOS prompt. Go for the keying stuff after you get that working. Good luck!

Thanks Michele, I gotta run down to Radio Shack and pick up a couple of the BNC to Phono Adapters. I've still got about 1,000 feet of RG-6 left over from another wireing project I did, got the crimper and rca-f connectors so cables are no problem. I also just ordered a Panasonic 2083 20" monitor ($352.00 nothing fancy) to use with the setup…should be here in two days as its coming out of Chicago. I'd planned on working with the card today but……… had to try to make a living and did some Q&A with the local NBC affiliate Engineer/Art Director. Soooo Much for this afternoon.<g> I think I got this pretty much figured out so tommorrow I'll pop open the Box and try to get things going. After that I'm gonna be a real pest <g> You know things like.. do Ya happen to have any real neat scripts I could borrow and questions about laying sound dubs in…little stuff like that. BTW I just took a 3/4" copy of the old 92' Siggraph tape, had the engineer bump it up to BetaSP and cut me a regular SVHS copy with a window burn so we could put together a 30 second spot. After looking at the quality on the SVHS copy first generation off the BetaSP I'm really impressed with the difference. Almost makes Ya' wanna go out and spend $35,000. Just to impress your friends,<BG> SIGH!!!! Guess I better get back to reality with the Magni…Gotta Walk before I can Fly- – – – I guess- – – <g>. You wouldn't happen to know of anyone that's got a low-time AG-7750 they're willing to part with for a reasonable amount of money would you? I was going to pick up two AG1970's and an AGA96 to do Low End S-VHS Edits and HD Audio Dubs but after looking at the SVHS taken from the BetaSP I'm convinced I won't be happy starting out with anything less than the AG7750, problem is….Yup!! CASH!!. I can't really afford to Max out all my plastic this late in the year so I gotta go for the Deals and grow slow. The business has been picking up nicely though so if the current trend continues I'll be looking at Mooooore Hardware. Thanks Michele….Oh Ya' I called/talked to Bret at Pyros and their supposed to be giving me a call back about your books. Deceided I gotta have those too. Ever Have one of those months where you consistantly overspend your projected income? Uh-Hugh!…Well…Maybe its sorta been more like one of those decades. Seems to coincide with my involvement in this part of the Industry…Hmmmmmmm. Thanks again Michele….I'll let you know how it's going..hope your Tour De Force on the Continent is going great for you. James, We are currently trying to sell a 7750 for a client. Virtually no time on the deck at all. If you're interested let me know. I think we said we'd let it go for around $4500. The deck has the Faroudja TCG. Paul

Paul, << The deck has the Faroudja TCG. Paul>> I'm interested Paul….What is a Faroudja TCG and is it by any chance the similiar to the optional AG-F700 time Code Generator/Reader that lets you perform LTC/VITC recording and playback to enable high-precision time code editing. James (not too proud to read the Brochure) Murphy BTW my Phone is (414) 435-7345 Do you Take: Plastic(s)? First Born Time Payments Gold Krugerands My Good Looks and Swell Personality? James Murphy

James, The Faroudja is indeed the optional AG-700. It is an extremely nice one. Normally we do take MC/Visa, but since this isn't our equipment, we can't afford the 3% processing fee. However if you want to pay the extra $135 that the bank is going to charge us then we'll work with you. The only other form of payment is US Dollars via cashiers check. Our client is losing quite a bit of money on the deck considering the fact that they never really used it. I won't be in the office until Friday, but if you decide you want the deck, I'll make arrangements to get it to you. Paul .

Paul, << Normally we do take MC/Visa, but since this isn't our equipment, we can't afford the 3% processing fee. However if you want to pay the extra $135 that the bank is going to charge us then we'll work with you >> I was going to ask you if your client would take any less than the $4500 as my funds are low due to the Operating/Advertising commitments I just recently aggreed to. The only way I could run this is to either go Plastic or talk to my bank about extending our current line of credit. As a Start Up Company literally Everybody wants CASH which I understand since this is the 3rd company I've successfully started. However that doesn't help when you need $20K Line-O-Credit and the Bank's in a Conservative MOOD about increasing current debt. That's _my_ problem though and if we have another quarter like last quarter It'll be no problem whatsoever….of course that doesn't get me the equipment I need NOW to continue to expand the business. << The only other form of payment is US Dollars via cashiers check. Our client is losing quite a bit of money on the deck considering the fact that they never really used it.>> US dollars? Where are you located and where would this deck be coming from? Also could you tell me about whether or not I'd be able to get the warrenty transfered to my business? I am also tempted to say that if the client is "losing quite a bit of money..considering..they never really used it" You might want to ask them if they would consider $4K and the feeling that they've really helped a fellow 3D'r who _will_ appreciate it and be extreeeemly thankful as well as offer to work on a project possibly trade some free time for the additional discount….Hint Hint…Nudge..Nudge..Know what I mean, Know what I mean, Say no more.<g> << if you decide you want the deck, I'll make arrangements to get it to you. >> I'm still interested in the Deck, however I'd like to know about the warrenty and how Solid the $4500 Has to be. I'm a Start Up so I understand the $ situation….Thanks Paul. James M. Murphy JAMES MURPHY CONSULTING Green Bay, Wisconsin U.S.A.

James, Our client paid a full $6500 ,about $800 below retail, for the unit and I don't think he'll go below the $4500. The machine only has a couple of minutes of animation time on it max. Our client hasn't even sent in the warranty card, so the card is still in the information packet. Like I said, the deck is brand new for all intensive purposes. We're located on the beach in Virginia, but I always stipulate U.S. funds for any international prospects that may be scanning CIS. If you're interested let me know. Paul .

Jeez, how did you get Cserve to take a message that long??!! Easy on the technical stuff, I had a large breakfast. Regarding the Betacam, yes, it is beautiful, isn't it? To get Betacam output without spending the $$$, I made a deal with a local rental place (Hi-Tech Rentals will be a familiar name to those who have known me a while). I did a series of logos for them in exchange for low-priced or free rentals over a series of weekends. Remember, James, why buy the cow when the milk is free? <g> There is probably a small rental place around that would be interested in working out a deal with you, where you would do graphics and provide graphics services for their customers who want it. Sort of a cooperative thang where both parties win. Michele

So far the tour has been to London only, but I am revving up for a trip to Belgium next week. Time to dust off the old Eurail pass and reserve my seat near the food 'n booze car. Nothing like a bit of breathtaking scenery viewed to the strains of Mozart blasting in my ears (via Walkman) while sipping a glass of Pernod. Isn't technology a beautiful thing — it allows us to experience sensory input from many different sources at one time. Who needs VR? <g> Michele

Just browsing and read your question about the Magni? VGA producer. Are you having problems? Maybe I can help. I have used them since the begining and am also one of their beta test sites for hardware. They do have alot of features on the card that is not documented.
#49578From: James M. MurphyJul 13, 1993 11:50 PM
Thanks Don, I just received Micheles older VGA Producer (Pro?) card. I've read through the VGA Producer Pro Operator's Manual and the VGA Director Manual. Keven at Magni sent me the VGA Director Version 1.1 Software and Utilities Disk. So I should be OK in that Department. I'm not sure about hooking up the card other than I'll be starting with the Composite Video Hook-Up. The card resembles the one pictured on page 2.2 in figure 2.1 if you happen to have the Operators Manual dated March 1992 except the layout is a little different….actually now that I look at it the only thing that looks like the figure 2.1 is the metal portion on the Buss side of the card where the SN is located. The Card Says VGA Producer on the inside end portion of the card perpendicular to horizontal (Vertically located on the end) Does this mean it is not a VGA Producer PRO and is the older VGA Producer? How would I be able to check this….I guess I could call Magni and give them the serial number.<g> That should do it OK! If it is the Older VGA Producer Don am I out of luck trying to hook up the newer software and Remote control w/phone jack cable I purchased seperatly from Magni? I also have the RAMDAC IC interface board and 26 cond. ribbon cable as well as the Video Breakout Cable so I should be all set..Right? On the Back of the Board there's a sticker listing the board as a 650-5108-01 Rev. C Does any of this mean anything to you? Thats what I know about this card….NOW I gotta open my box and try to hook it up to a 2 year old (About the same age as Michele tells me this card may be) Renaissance GRX Rendition II Graphics card model 70-0047 with 256 Color Model with RVGA daughterboard. I think I have to disconnect the the Daughter board to get this to Fly…Is this a correct assumption? The Drivers for 3D Studio and Animator Pro are working Just fine as I've got the latest upgrades and the Rendition II card has been working fine these past 2 years. Hope I don't have to replace it. I figured since the graphics card and the Magni are both a little older technology they might work together. Not always a good assumption but worth trying as I can't really look a the ATVISTA or Targa +64… Then there's always the Matrox Illuminator Pro! So What do you think Don…Have I got a chance here! Thanks for your interest and support. James M. Murphy
#49624From: Don LandisJul 14, 1993 11:37 AM
Just received your response and I do not have the older manuals infront of me now but to get you started here's some background info to consider. The original Magni (not PRO) hooked up to the VGA card via a RAMDAC adapter board only. Magni supplied two versions of this adapter board for two types of RAMDAC's, DIP's and PLCC. The VGA card required either a socketed RAMDAC DIP or a soldered square type chip. The 26 conductor ribbon cable connects to this adapter board and links to the stake pin connector on the Magni. The PRO model has, among other feature improvements, two ways to connect. The original way described above and the simple vga card feature connector hookup. The Magni's all operate totally transparent to the system except when using the director software supplied. I'm not sure this director software works with the older boards but IMHO the director software was a bit awkward for an old hardware video switcher type.<g> The RJ series phone line will work to hook up the control box but I found the Magni supplied lines all had one of the plugs attached backwards which made off the shelf cables incompatible. I bought a 25 foot cable and had to reverse the polarity of one of the connectors to get the wiring right. If you look at the short cable they supply you will see the pin hookups between plugs are backwards. Also note that you do not need to have the box hooked up to get output from the board. You just need it to get switched and keying control. In no case should you disconnect the daughter boards from the Magni. If you received an adapter board with the Magni then my guess is it's an older version. The older version had one major problem. Thin horizontal graphic lines would flicker. They did have an upgrade to these cards that corrected this but it was very expensive. The video output is on the red connector for composite and genlock goes to the black connector. If you don't hookup external video for genlock the magni produces it's own high quality (RS-170) sync. What type of RAMDAC adapter card do you have? is it for DIP or a square socket? I've used the Magni with the Orchid Pro Designer II (not IIS) PLCC RAMDAC and an STB 8 bit VGA card with DIP RAMDAC. I'm not familiar with your graphics card but if the ramdac style matches the conditions I've listed above it should work. I'll get my old manuals and boards (beta) and see how they match up this evening and get back to you.

Don, Thank you very much….this will give me a good start as to where to look. I'm about ready to open this box and take a good look at my graphics cards. BTW the Daughter card I was refering to was the RVGA Daughter board on my Rendition II (Appian Technologies) 1024 x 768 Graphics board. This helps a lot. I'm going to open her up now so gotta disconect. You will probably be hearing more from me as I would like to know about those "Undocumented" items even if this card fires up first try. Again Thanks Don, James M. Murphy
#49690From: Don LandisJul 14, 1993 11:10 PM
OK, More specifically, you do have the original VGA producer, not the pro model which has many more features. I verified your number 5108-01 Rev C. I'm not sure whether the director software will work with your model as I've never tested it. The director software was introduced with the PRO and utilizes a com port on the PRO for control. In my opinion its not much of a loss. I didn't like the software. Most important thing is for you to match the RAMDAC adapter to an appropriate VGA card. Magni will send you the other style if you need it although they may charge for it. There is no advantage of one type over the other, just compatibility. The remote control boxes of both the pro and the original are compatible/identical. There might be different decals on the pro as I had suggested this to show some of the added features of the pro. One of the nicest features of the pro is zoom control of the graphic overlay and support for higher 800×600 res. The older producer will lock to 800×600 but the graphics will be larger therefore an effective res. gain of zero at NTSC screen.
#49932From: James M. MurphyJul 17, 1993 12:35 AM
Don, You were correct….Of course…How could I have doubted it for a moment….The cards Serial Number checked out as a Regular VGA Producer shipped to the Distributor in Jan. 1990 and since the first VGA Producer PRO's shiped Nov. 1991 it's a oldy for sure. Like you said the VGA Director was probably no great loss but I really could have used Zoom and some of the other features. I think I'm learning a good lesson here as I've already purchased the Video Breakout cable, Remote Control with modular phone jack cable, BNC-to–Phono Adapters and the wrong operators manual. I also just had them send me the VGA Director Manual and Software. Which is of little use since it's the original VGA Producer. After all this I find I can't use the RAMDAC IC Interface Board "Old Technology" and had to spend al _lot_ more $ for the "Brooktree Chip Connector" which I received Federal Express today so I could get things running this weekend only to find out that the Tech. at Magni I first talked too didn't realize what I was saying when I told him I had to remove the VGA Daughterboard from my Rendition II GRX Graphics card to get at the Brooktree Pallette chip. Of course the second tecnician has just told me that the Magni wouldn't replace the VGA so I need to "Buy" another VGA card and use the Feature connector to get standard VGA. Problem is I've now run out of Buss Slots and would have to remove my internal Fax/Modem to plug in the new VGA FEEature Connector Rig. Thereby forcing me to spend much more for an External Fax/Modem. All this is bringing the cost close to what a NEW VGA Producer PRO would cost me as a dealer demo and I'm wondering if that would solve my current problem as I thought the newer card would work through the output connection from my VGA/HI-Res GRX card with NO modifications or extra connectors to purchase. That would also solve my Buss problem although I'll probably have to go to an external soon anyway to plug something else in. Whatdaya think… time to forget saving money with old technology? Will the New VGA Producer Pro work Through the Monitor OUt to an In on the Magni Card? Will Boris and Natasha ever catch Moose and Squirrel? And will Michele Ever Forgive Me? James (I think I've Learned a Valuable Lesson) Murphy. *<:)

JM-what has happened to good tech support? I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I spent all weekend trying to resolve a bug in Excel running on Windows for workgroups that MS says doesn't exist. Now they say it was fixed in a maintenance release! You got similar bad advice on your Magni. Let's start from the top. Neither the Magni producer nor Producer PRO replaces the VGA card. The original VGA Producer can only derive its input signal from the VGA card's RAMDAC. This RAMDAC must be of a compatible type on supported VGA cards. The PRO (for academic info only) also derives it's signal from the VGA card via the feature connector OR the RAMDAC. Both Magni cards reside in an extra 8 bit slot. In all cases you always hook up the VGA monitor to your original VGA card as usual. The video(NTSC) in and out come from the breakout cable on the Magni. You should return the director software and manual as it won't work with your card. Next time you call Magni ask to speak to Fred Couger. Make sure he knows you're using the VGA producer and not the Pro, give him the serial # . Many times new techs are not aware of earlier cards and their special limitations consequently they give inaccurate tech support. Part of your confusion is that you probably have the wrong manual describing the product installation. Maybe you could have done it cheaper with the PRO but now you have almost all you need to get rolling, just get the right VGA card with the right RAMDAC and you'll be in business.
#50212From: James M. MurphyJul 19, 1993 11:47 PM
Don, Oooo—Boooy…. << In all cases you always hook up the VGA monitor to your original VGA card as usual. The video(NTSC) in and out come from the breakout cable on the Magni. >> I was kinda hoping I could loop the output of the Rendition II card that normally would go to the monitor through the Newer Magni thereby eliminating the need for a "Feature Connector" & a Brooktree cable connections setup. As I now understand it no matter what version of the Magni VGA Producer I have I'll have to add another VGA card to my system because I have to remove the RenditionII's 256 color RVGA Daughterboard….correct? Could I eliminate the extra daughterboard by choosing (purchasing!) a different newer graphics board with a different setup regarding the on-board vga? [ Maybe then I could return the $97.00 Brooktree connector and use the oridinal RAM DAC IC Adaptor…except the one I received from Michele appears to have some special Solder work done to it with an unknown Ram Dac already on it….Maybe I better stick with the Brooktree setup!] If so Who do Ya Like! Since I'm using 3D studio and Animator Pro 1.3 and it looks like I'm going to have to buy another VGA card perhaps this would be the time to upgrade the 2 year old Rendition II. It's served me well but I've got to look at what's new and what my clients may want to see. What do you think about the Matrox MGA card? Could it coexist nicley? Actually I had hopes that the newer card would take the regular VGA out through some kind of loop-through so I could keep the Rendition II and if Magni would take back all the additional connectors & things I've thusfar purchased I could ship back Michele's Board to her and purchase the new one. Now if I am going to have to purchase additional items to get the Magni to work in either version I guess I'll be much better off sticking with the older original Magni given the current investment. Michele has been wonderful about this whole thing and If you haven't purchased her books yet I feel duty bound to Highly recommend them to you for your 3DS needs….I just ordered mine today so I'll be able to give you a more detailed review in a few weeks.<g> I've heard they've gotten rave reviews though! I've had the same experience when faxing from Australia to California. Please contact Echo Magazines directly on Compuserve to find out if they have sent your order. If not, I suggest you order directly from Screen Artists in London, where the books are now being shipped to Europe. You can contact Echo Magazines on user ID: Multi-CAD Magazine [100237,1155] To order from Screen Artists, call on 44-81-642-1370 or fax on 44-81-7701277. If you do this also send me a message on Cserve. I am currently at Screen Artists for a week and I will personally check to make sure it goes out. Michele

Michele, The Bookstore in L.A. (USA) just called me and I ordered the 3 volume 3D T&T set – I've not been on the forum for a while so I don't know if this availability has been discussed recently. "Olga" was the person I spoke to – forget the name of the store, tel no is 213-464-4322 (for anyone who may have missed it before). Robin

Yep, Opamp definitely has a cartonload of the books, because I packed them up and sent them off myself a few weeks ago. Hope you enjoy them! Michele

Michele, I received the books – even as we speak my husband is making gears (we have side-by-side computers) He says the books are just what he was looking for (he does 3D studio/Animator Pro etc – I'm the PC "tech") – THANKS! Robin

Great to hear. Regarding the Gears excercise, I have a good friend in London who is a high school math teacher. He says he's always looking for ways to relate math to careers, so I told him about the (minor) mathematical anguish I went through with the gears to get them to be proportional and also to loop in the animation. If I had written the excercise when I was still in high school I'm sure all the math would have been a breeze! <g> Anyway, it's a good answer to the question "What do I need algebra for?" Michele
