Off-Line Navigators
43 messages in this thread
Just a note to any and all.
If you don't have an off-line navigator such a Nav-CIS, d/l one immediately!
I expect to stay under the 300 min "free time" this month for the first time
this year.
The interface was a little awkward at first but have really learned to like it
after 2 days of use.
Being one who checks the Asoft forum ( and others) at least once a day makes
this program fantastic. This thing could really cut into Cserve's profits <g>.
No more complaining about online rates for me : )
I better start working on that 3DS logo now as I have 27 days left on my timed
edition <BG>…

William,
I use TAPCIS 5.43, and I am in around 6 Forums daily. My compuserve
bills are usually under $20.00 a month. Really a good deal.
-Mick-
Hi,
PMJI but….. I have been following this thread with interest because
my c-serve bills seem awfully high. I use WinCim which I take to be an offine
reader. I have enabled Auto-Pilot and typically download 3 sections of this
forum and 3 sections of the acad forum in about 3-4 minutes and then log off.
My bill still seems outrageous but scince it comes as one line item on a credit
card statement I can't tell were the $ go. I have tried to comunicate with
c-serve for an detailed accounting but no luck. I call one of thier 800 # for
14.4 modems to log on and this connect time is rolled into my bill. I have been
unable to determine how much this 800 # costs per minute and if the rates vary
for time of day.
My question is are these other readers Tapcis and Navcis so much faster
than WinCim that they pay for themselves?
Mark –
Real easy to get your daily and historical charges on your CIS account. There
is a free area CHARGES that will let you look at how much you owe, how much
free time your have left and a day by day accounting of your charges. Just GO
CHARGES to get there. Compuserve is now $9.95 a month with five free hours of
connect time to spend as you wish (including mail). After that the charge is
hourly based on which plan you chose. Having a brain cramp at the moment <G>
but I believe the standard plan is $2.95 an hour after five hours.
WINCIM is not a true autonavigational program. I use Tapcis and with the touch
of one key, the program logs on, visits a half dozen forums, downloads all new
messages since I was on last in selected sections and shuts itself off. I can
then read and reply to messages off line and then log back on and upload the
replies or new messages I've written. Most work in the same way and have their
own forums for support.

Excuse me most politely, Anne, but I beg to differ. WinCIM, with Auto-Pilot
on, does exactly all the above, and I really find it impossible to believe that
any other program can do it faster.
I'm not saying WinCIM is the best (for one thing, I don't like the fact that I
can't easily translate message threads into a Word for Windows document without
clipboard) but it certainly fulfills the autonavigator function quite nicely.
Mike –
I won't argue! WINCIM's auto pilot feature is not widely known and isn't
officially supported by CIS. I've never tried it since I truly like Tapcis.
Part of what good forum assistants try to do is be sure that members are using
the fastest message reader they can instead of sitting on line live reading and
writing messages. Sure is less expensive now than it used to be. I remember
$12.00 an hour at 1200 baud <G>
Glad it's working well for you.
Anne
Anne…
I have to line up on your side <G>. I've been a registered TAPCIS user for a
few years now and I can't imagine WinCIM being faster, even with the autopilot
function engaged. First, maybe the DOS offline readers are just plain faster,
but I notice that even in the case of a forced log-off, TPACIS does it quicker
than WinCIM.
What I hope to become more proficient at is the use of CIS Navigator, which is
CompuServe's Windows off-line reader. I can't believe that CI$ would spend the
money developing a program like Navigator when the same thing could be done by
using an existing program and a special function. Maybe someone has
benchmarked all this and you could bring it in from another Forum? Sure would
be interesting to see <BG>.

NO WAY will I get drawn into a discussion of which software for CIS is best <G>
or fastest. To each his own.
Anne P.S. But Tapcis is best.
Anne…
Do you think we'll have to wait three years for the W95 version of WINTAP?

P.S. Like the way you slid that (praise) in <BG>.
PMJI,
Would you tell me more about autopilot, please? I can't find anything about it
in any of the files.
And… Let's say you're following a thread which is getting long i.e. say about
20 msgs. When I go to the filing cab., I then have to go through all the to get
to the newest msgs. Is there any way to avoid this?
Wade:
Sounds like you would love NavCIS. Threads are stored in order and can be
searched like a directory tree so you can tell who responded to who and trace a
conversation back to its roots. You get to set the number of days to keep
messages archived, too. The autopilot function is not a documented feature of
Wincim but it goes like this (Thanks go Mike Kelly for spelling this out):
>> You can use WinCim 1.4 to read your messages off-line (and automate the
process).
Go to your CSERVE\WINCIM directory and edit the file called WINCIM.INI. In
your [GENERAL PREFERENCES] section put this line:
Auto-Pilot=On
Now when you boot up WinCim you'll see AutoPilot in your Special Menu (at the
top). This will allow you to automatically selection the forums you want for
downloading, send mail from your outbasket, get mail for you, and then auto log
off. It generally takes me about three minutes each day to get all the
messages from the forums I'm interested in (and that's a lot!), so you really
save money. <<
FWIW, I used NavCIS's search feature to track down the above message from
9/29/95. I searched for the word 'autopilot' and it tracked down all of the
messages with that word in it. I've been using a few of these autonavigators
and I am liking this one alot.

Thanks fo the info. Sorry it took so long to respond; I was out having a baby.
Well, actually _Jane_ did most the work but that's a technicality I think we
get hung up on way too much in our society <G>. He's our second little boy:
Roland Harrison (no headless Thompson gunner jokes please!). No that you're
married, _you_ can start your own tribe <g>.
Congratulations Wade!
Now, take it easy for a while…<g>
-Alan
Thanks. I figure I'll be able to start taking it easy in about 18 yrs.
Hey Wade
Congrats on the bambino.
>>(no headless Thompson gunner jokes please!)
This was my daughters favorite song to go to sleep to, when she was a baby.
Even with me singing it. "He found him in Mombassa…."
JB
Hey, good to hear from ya. Thanks. Your singing couldn't have been that bad;
she went to sleep, didn't she?
Wade:
New baby, that's rocking good news! Way to go you potent lad! I will try my
best to repopulate the earth. I can't leave it all up to you <G>.
– Bob Ritger
Thanks and a happy "Be fruitful" to you, too.
This calls for a celebration, eh? Everybody light-up those virtual cigars!!
(Puff, Puff) 🙂
Congrats!!

Thanks. Yea, a little Flame action, a little Vapor action, a little Glow &
Smoke, a dash of Spirits (new little alcohol IPAS I've been working on).
>Would you tell me more about autopilot, please? I can't find anything >about

I think Bob pretty well covered it. Let me know if you have any other
questions.

Just use the Map button in your thread and you can see the tree structure and
jump to any particular point you want — it's very intuitive.
I really like WinCIM — I suspect the following for these kinds of programs is
similar to Word Processing wars — but I'd switch in a minute if anyone could
tell me of a program that would allow me to transparently (i.e. one button)
load message threads into a Word document (for saving).

I don't know if this is what your looking for, but I came across it while
trying to find something for my sister. It struck me that this may be the type
of thing your looking for?
Hope it helps.

I use the Map button, but how do you tell which are the new msgs? By looking at
the dates?
Yep, that's what I do.
Thanks for the info; that's just too time consuming compared to the way MacCIM
worked.
Hi Anne,
Thanks for your help. I use the auto-pilot feature, read about it here,
and it sounds like it is as fast at downloading as anything else. Maybe not as
many bells and whistles as Navcis\Tapcis (spell checker would be good for me
<g>).
Don't want to start a thread like 3ds benchmark but….. I logged on,
sent messages from out box, downloaded 3 sections of this forum, downloaded 3
sections of the acad forum, retrieved mail messages and logged off all
automaticaly in 2:45.
This is a typical session for me . My bill is $50+ per month. 3 min. x 30 days
=1.5 hrs,\mnth. At .10c\ min connect time and $10.00 a month subscription fee I
should be @ $20 per month.
I Know that you are not a c-serve employee and this is not your dept. I
had to get on a soapbox I guess and feel better now. I think this forum is the
greatest, c-serve in general however………

For that $9.95 a month you also get 300 minutes a month to spend in whatever
way you want (like here on AMMEDIA!). If all you are currently spending is 90
minutes a month your bill will go down from $50.00 to $9.95. Unless you are
counting long distance charges in there if you have any.
Anne
>> My question is are these other readers Tapcis and Navcis so much faster

Without a doubt! I expect mine to pay for itself in about 2 months.
A real nice feature ( I use NavCIS ) is being able to download just the
message headers, then highlight only the complete messages that I wish to read
( of course I read just about all of them anyways <g>).This saves you even more
dough! I also keep a updated list of all the library files for reference.
Makes the forum an offline encyclopedia of help.
Also has a spell-checker built in. : )

Bill,
Do you know if NavCis can import CSNav's filing cabinet and address book. I'm
not real happy with the program and I am thinking about changing. Maybe there
are others that would if NavCis doesn't.

>> Do you know if NavCis can import CSNav's filing cabinet and address book.
<<
PMJI. I just looked and it isn't listed in the import section. You always
cut'n'paste tho.
– ej
Eric,
Thanks for checking Eric, but did you see Wincim as an import possibility.
Bill Triffet checked out the import capabilities of NavCis and said it could
import WinCim. If thats true then it should work with CSNav, since WinCim and
CSNav are both CIS products and use the same filing cabinet and address book. I
did say "Should", never can tell till one tries it to know for sure.
Regards……………Rick – Technical Animations
>> …but did you see Wincim as an import possibility. <<
Yeppers. Wincim address book importation is a "go" in Navcis!
Have done a GO DVORAK yet to try the demo out? It's your surest way of seeing
if it imports properly.
– ej
Ernie,
>>Yeppers. Wincim address book importation is a "go" in Navcis!<<
Thanks for letting me know. I think I might change from CSNav to Navcis.

I think only OZCIS, TAPCIS, CIM, and WINCIM can be imported ( according to my
pull down menu) into NAVCIS. Try the DVORAK forum. Their sysops are very
helpful and they have some text files explaining all the functions in detail.
Good luck!
Bill Triffet – Triffet Animation Co.
Bill,
WinCim and CSNav use the same filing cabinet and address book, which means
there should be no problem importing them into CSNav. Thanks for checking that
out for me.

How do you do this? I have just gotten comfortable with using the
message sections of this forum but have never been to the libraries. I am too
concerned with my current c-serve bills to justify cruising around on line and
cheking out these libraries. Is the list you refer to like an index? How do I
get it ? TIA
mark
Mark:
With NavCIS you can download the library catalog every x number of days. It
will dl just the long descriptions so you always have a current searchable
list. Also, Anne has compiled several files which have these catalog listings
for each section. If you download LIBCAT.zip you'll have a list of everything
in AMMEDIA. This way you can search it off-line and save $$.

Right. It creates an index with descriptions. NavCIS logs on and grabs just
file headers. You can also specify the complete file description,as seen in
WinCIM. Very cutomizable for searches. NavCIS is in the DVORAK forum.
Also note that the fine sysops here create file indexes for each file section
on a regular basis. Those can be d/l'ed quickly also. : )

Mark,
You're being billed at least $10/hr for using the 800 number. Better you should
find a local node to call into CIS. You can check the latest node list for
freebies by using GO PHONES.
Mick:
You ought to drop into the TAPCIS forum and check out the new v6 of TAPCIS!
Lots of great enhancements — and there are some changes coming (I'm not sure
how soon) in the basic CIS software which will apparently make 5.43 and below
unuseable.
Dave
Is Nav-CIS like Golden Compass for OS2 warp? I like GC well enough except the
filing aspect. Its impossible to keep an orderly record of all your messages
written and received etc. I guess it can be done, but too complicated to keep
on top of I think. Is Nav-CIS any better for filing? Can I use it on Warp?

Haven't a clue about OS/2. Maybe others are. NavCIS is very organized though :
