To all, Has anybody read the Studio City Charter (in the TAKE5 library)? I have received no responses. If I get no response that is the same as a vote of Indifferent. Therefore the charter will be ratified. In one week this issue will be closed and I will post the results. At that time I will post an invitation to anyone who wants to participate. The issues of commercialization and of "freedom" have been raised by a number of individuals. When we did the survey, asking for your opinions on these issues, very little was said and the votes tended toward indifferent. It seems that most of the people initially interested in this project have stopped participating. Therefore it is clear that neither side of the issue is attractive to most people. I expected to just collect everybody's thoughts, write them down, vote to adopt them and then get on with the building of the city. So far, the whole thing has degenerated into an irritating conflict of communication and a waste of many people's valuable time. If all participants continue to be indifferent or to resist comming to any agreement, I think it will be obvious to all that we should go our separate ways. I am contimuing on with the city as is. I like the rules and I believe that an impressive city can be built. But, it has also become obvious that most people don't want to be involved in a project where there is political infighting going on. I myself have become angry and combative and have contributed to the chaos and most assuredly have driven away many who don't want to fight for the right to participate in the Studio City project. So far, little or nothing has been accomplished in my opinion except the prolongation of this agonizing push and pull over issues of what we should build and why we are building it. Here is my final position:::: I will continue to participate in the forum and I will help build the city. I will help render what gets built and I will help get it shown at Siggraph. Other than that, I no longer have any interest in arguing about why or how the city should be built. It will get built according to the charter. I can promise you that. If other versions get built, I am no longer concerned as of Jan 15, 1995, I am moving forward with the city map and inviting anyone who can help to do so. Send messages to me by e-mail if you want to be included in what I am doing. Finally, the resulting tapes will be for sale, not given away. Tape is not free and the money collected at Siggraph will go to pay for the costs of production. That is how it has to be done. If an angel appears and puts up the money for the tapes, that is fine. Any angel lurking about has been pretty silent so far except Matt Armstrong who offered to render the City for us. He did not offer tapes. Obviously I am tired of the controversy, and I am moving forward with the project. This is comming close to a "Tower of Babel". Sanford

<<So far, the whole thing has degenerated into an irritating conflict of communication and a waste of many people's valuable time. If all participants continue to be indifferent or to resist comming to any agreement, I think it will be obvious to all that we should go our separate ways.>> You are right that some of the recent discussion may not be directly helping the city but it appears that many "citizens" have questions that the charter failed to answer. <<But, it has also become obvious that most people don't want to be involved in a project where there is political infighting going on. I myself have become angry and combative and have contributed to the chaos and most assuredly have driven away many who don't want to fight for the right to participate in the Studio City project.>> This is turning out to more than just a real city but a real city with it's own political struggle. Next we'll have Save the Hungry and so on? Has someone done a weather prediction. It would be great to have snow and other weather effects. <<If other versions get built, I am no longer concerned as of Jan 15, 1995, I am moving forward with the city map and inviting anyone who can help to do so. Send messages to me by e-mail if you want to be included in what I am doing.>> I don't think it is necessary to begin building this in private. Afterall this is project is not the property of a single person but is everyone's. The StudioCity forum should remain the place for debate and disussion. The recent exhanges are simply the democratic process in work. Anyone who hopes to take a position on the committee should be fully aware of this and able to deal with such issues. It won't be the easiest job but this "polictical" side of the work is just as important as creating the models. <<Finally, the resulting tapes will be for sale, not given away. Tape is not free and the money collected at Siggraph will go to pay for the costs of production. That is how it has to be done.>> But should it? No one is forcing you to make these tapes. While the survey did suggest that a video tape of the project be done it didn't specifically state who/when/how this would be done. You seem to think that it "has to be done" and it is your right to do this. I think that instead of simply doing it, you should instead ask everyone IF you can do this. Afterall no-one is expecting to get payed to work on the models and upload them. Only a select few have free access to the forum but the majority of people will be uploading their models at their own personal cost. They don't expect to get paid. If everyone agrees that you should produce the tape, then so be it. But I think that you should ask everyone beforehand, no? Survey Question 25: 25. Because anyone can download these files, all who participate in the city hereby grant permission to the general public to look at, and to enjoy the city. But, no individual or company may copy any part of the city and sell it, use any part of the city in a commercial venture, or sell rendered images of the city, without written permission from applicable contributors. Answer: Agree <<This is comming close to a "Tower of Babel".>> Hey, why don't we build a "Tower of Babel" in the city? David "Citizen number: 234332" Gould

David, I am no longer interested in arguing or going to committee. I simply state that a City will be built and shown at Siggraph. If you wani in, so be it. If you wish to do your own, so be it. Obviously you feel that every issue should be subjected to the democratic process….but what was the survey? You voted and you don't like the results. Thats not my problem. I will have a City at Siggraph despite the whims of the democratic freedom fighters in I have to do the whole thing myself. I'm fed up. This is my last word. You are now the boss, my man, you are in control. Let's see you do it. Sanford

Sanford, Have patience! Take 5 man! I see a lot of enthusiastic caring people out there who want to contribute. I also see a lot of people who are confused about where the project is going. The charter that you guys put together is a great start! Don't despair! I downloaded the Charter on Saturday, it is Sunday and I am still thinking about it… My general impression is that it is a pretty workable place to start building from! Give it time! The time that you, Paul and others have put into getting us this far is really impressive. Take a break! Let go of the project! Pass the torch! One of the big problems right now is that people get lost in all the multi-threaded messages and have nowhere to go for a basic statement of purpose and "update" on the current status of the project. By the end of the week, I hope to upload a file that will give people an up-to-date sense of where the project is, including: a directory of participants, a SC2000 FAQ list and a set of some of the more visionary statements about what the project is. I would be more than happy to help out with the city plan and also with any preliminary technical specifications. I have had a lot of experience building open-ended city models within the limitations of DOS/3DS. We need a "Forum Bulletins" file or message thread which is "just business". It is really hard to start anything from a message before the thread disintegrates… You need a place where you can call for help if you need it… The democratic process can work. However, it will take some time to figure out how to make it work within the limitations of this medium. (I have been exploring shareware "voting" software on CIS and elsewhere looking for a simpler way for people to vote on and respond to issues.) Why not set up a real time conference for the project to discuss the charter and the "next step"? David and Brian might have to stay up late, but it might be a good way to refocus the project and hopefully take some of the weight off of your shoulders! –Donald

Donald, de to sk: <<Have patience! Take 5 man! I see a lot of enthusiastic caring people out there who want to contribute. The time that you, Paul and others have put into getting us this far is really impressive. Take a break! Let go of the project! Pass the torch!>> Well put! Maybe a little late, but I totally agree with you. The project has been given a good start, and its quickly approaching prime time for model building! Now that the long awaited charter has finally surfaced, it shouldn't be too difficult to tweak it into a document on which the majority can agree. <<By the end of the week, I hope to upload a file that will give people an up-to-date sense of where the project is, including: a directory of participants, a SC2000 FAQ list and a set of some of the more visionary statements about what the project is. >> Outstanding! I hope you can pull this off. These two sections, SC2K and Take 5, have been in a virtual frenzy since late November with criminations, incriminations and recriminations, accusations and denials, arguments, spats, and feuds, and some of the best reading I've found on CI$. Your efforts to summarize or present the state-of-the-union at this time is most welcome and I'm sure will be very well received. <<We need a "Forum Bulletins" file or message thread which is "just business". It is really hard to start anything from a message before the thread disintegrates… You need a place where you can call for help if you need it… >> Absolutely! You've stated the problem very succinctly, and I hope somebody can come up with a good solution that will clear up much of the confusion and smooth out some of the ruffled feathers. <<The democratic process can work. However, it will take some time to figure out how to make it work within the limitations of this medium. (I have been exploring shareware "voting" software on CIS and elsewhere looking for a simpler way for people to vote on and respond to issues.)>> That's a tough problem. The simplest expression of individual opinion seems to find no limit of individual interpretation. Intended meanings contained in these messages is as frequently misinterpreted as not by those who read them. Hopefully, this problem can be mitigated by findings from your research. <<Why not set up a real time conference for the project to discuss the charter and the "next step"? David and Brian might have to stay up late, but it might be a good way to refocus the project…>> How do you propose to do this? I've never participated in a real time conference before, so I don't know the mechanics involved. I think its a good idea assuming enough people are available and willing to participate whenever the conference can be set up. Perhaps setting it up would be easier after a "Forum Bulletin" is established, and people have a place to go for "business' type help. You have offered some interesting insights and options… Thanks for the calm voice and helpful attitude. …B.

Bruce, Thanks very much for your helpful comments! As for conferencing, I think that we can do it informally anytime that we're in the forum together… Do you have WinCim? WinCim has a "conference" menu where you can chat privately on-line with anybody else in the forum, or move to a public "room". Possibly the sysops could help us put short progress bulletins/announcements in the ASOFT log-in forum bulletin… But I don't think we should do that until we do some work to make the project more accessible. –Donald

Donald, I think your idea of a news or update thread could be created the same way Asoft news flashes us when we log on. It is a gread idea, but up to the Sysops to get going. I am patient and impatient…both at the same time. I take a stance, than I give in, take a stance and move, take a stance…you know…like in a debate. That's what we have here at the moment. An open forum has been suggested for Thursday nights. You name the time…but we all need to be awake to perticipate. Sanford

I will post a new message in SC2000 to get some feedback on the "when" question. –Donald

Donald, If you like we could try to set up a conference for next week, thurs. night to discuss the latest results of the Charter votes. It's a place to start. I have to look at a time zone map. I don't know how David Gould is going to coordinate with my time Zone yet. I'd like him to participate, among others. Paris and Los Angeles are many hours apart. Sanford

<<I simply state that a City will be built and shown at Siggraph. If you wani in, so be it. If you wish to do your own, so be it.>> I personally prefer, at this stage, to focus on the city produced in the forum rather than a commerical one. Maybe later. <<Obviously you feel that every issue should be subjected to the democratic process.>> That is what is written in the Charter… c.) Voting: -All elections for offices will be decided by a plurality of votes. -All propositions must be approved by a simple (50%) majority to pass. <<I'm fed up. This is my last word. You are now the boss, my man, you are in control. Let's see you do it.>> There is no need to get angry and emotional. In fact I suggest you let your angry out rather than keep it bottled up inside. Take your favourite teddy bear and place it on a table. Sit down next to the bear and shout at it at the top of your lungs "DAVID, YOU ARE A NAUGHTY BOY! YOU NEED TO BE PUNISHED!" Then take the bear and pound it forty or fifty time in the chest and face. Then pick it up and through it against the closest wall. Stomp on it at least twenty times(anything less than twenty won't be effective). Then take the teddy bear and place it in the garbage disposal then say "YOU WANT TO SEE THE CITY, I'LL SHOW YOU THE CITY!". Press the on button and watch as the bear is disintegrated. You'll feel a lot better, I can guarentee it. David "Freud" Gould

humm…. why not elect officials, mayor, city concil, ect.? then YOU would know WHO is interested and WHO is not? yes/no ? then AFTER this i would put up BIDS for construction of the city. per building or persection of the city., block? the bids would be per time the individual could contribute hours/days? that would be upto the concil? mayor? board of trusties? i for one would give 10 hours per month to construct and give drawings of house/buidings/stores in autocad or 3ds format in 3d of course! I THINK THAT a STRUCTURED envirorment would the best WAY to do this. otherwise what you have here is a free for all and nobody does anything, because nobody know what to do! they need to have purpose / a JOB to do here otherwise where is the supervision? we NEED a LEADER here which is YOU . so …. Sherwood, Thanks for your input. We have a proposed list of city jobs included in the Charter file residing in the TAKE5 library. But, we have not yet addressed the task of electing anyone for Mayor. I feel that I am functioning as a w3kind of clerk, but I realize that I have taken certain stands toward a structured environment for Studio City. This structure needs to be built in an organized way and your generous offer of labor is much appreciated. Sanford I will be putting together a Newsletter…perhaps we could put a help wanted, and a positions open section on the last page. I plan to post it weekly starting on Jan 30.

I've been using it since it came out with nary a hitch, but I don't do much more than e-mail and DL something from one of these libs once in a great while, so I can't verify its integrity for big file transfers. When I need to send or receive anything but a zipped text file, I nearly always crank up trusty old bullet proof Procomm Plus in DOS. sanford, << Has anybody read the Studio City Charter (in the TAKE5 library)? I have received no responses. If I get no response that is the same as a vote of Indifferent. Therefore the charter will be ratified.>> Yes, I've read it, but haven't replied to it yet. I was unaware of any urgency associated with responding to it. You may not have received any responses yet because readers are carefully considering issues presented in the _proposed_ charter and are busy preparing their responses/alternatives to it. Some who were following this project in its earlier stages and realizing there is still no place to UL meshes may not be checking in on a daily basis. Others, like Angela Pate, may have been away for any number of reasons, and have no knowledge of the charter and the sudden urgency to have it ratified. And others might want nothing to do with the politics going on here, but fully intend to contribute models when an UL area and parcels are made available. << In one week this issue will be closed and I will post the results. At that time I will post an invitation to anyone who wants to participate.>> What's the rush here? People are talking, the project is evolving, and we have nowhere to send our mesh files yet. << The issues of commercialization and of "freedom" have been raised by a number of individuals. When we did the survey, asking for your opinions on these issues, very little was said and the votes tended toward indifferent. It seems that most of the people initially interested in this project have stopped participating.>> What information has led you to this conclusion? Donald Newlands has identified at least 28 people at last count who are or have been participating. How many more are lurking, waiting for a parcel on which to proudly place a mesh? <<Therefore it is clear that neither side of the issue is attractive to most people.>> Which issue? You mentioned two, commercialization and "freedom." Most of what I've read, and that which appeals most to me as well is the freedom to choose commercialization or not. <<I expected to just collect everybody's thoughts, write them down, vote to adopt them and then get on with the building of the city. So far, the whole thing has degenerated into an irritating conflict of communication and a waste of many people's valuable time. If all participants continue to be indifferent or to resist comming to any agreement, I think it will be obvious to all that we should go our separate ways.>> Nothing that's hard is ever easy. A project as complicated by medium, distance, timing, and personal taste as this is by definition extremely hard to manage. What you refer to as degeneration would by bothers be termed evolution. What is an irritating conflict of communication could instead be interpreted as an open and free exchange of ideas. No time is wasted while spent in pursiut of noble goals. Do you have noble goals, sanford? 😉 << I am contimuing on with the city as is. I like the rules and I believe that an impressive city can be built.>> An impressive city can be built only by a dedicated and diverse group of creative and talented people interacting together. Creative and talented people are individualistic by their very natures which is in direct conflict with the levels of peaceful interaction required by group projects adhering to a strict code of rules. <<But, it has also become obvious that most people don't want to be involved in a project where there is political infighting going on.>> Again, based on what information? What are your definitions of "most people" and "involved?" This political infighting might be considered good clean fun to some who visit this forum, and a necessary stage of project development by others. We are people representing different cultures with different views, and that which some might say is political infighting could be seen as dealing with essential issues by others. <<I myself have become angry and combative and have contributed to the chaos and most assuredly have driven away many who don't want to fight for the right to participate in the Studio City project.>> Sadly, I must agree with this statement. Too quick on the "SEND" button? << So far, little or nothing has been accomplished in my opinion except the prolongation of this agonizing push and pull over issues of what we should build and why we are building it.>> Having no area to store the UL'd meshes, what other issues could or should be addressed other that what should or should not be built, and discussing the purpose(s) for building anything? This has been and continues to be very interesting theatre from where I sit. Why, in your opinion, has it seemed to be so much "prolonged agony" to participate in the development of such an exciting experiment as this? << Here is my final position:::: I will continue to participate in the forum and I will help build the city. I will help render what gets built and I will help get it shown at Siggraph. Other than that, I no longer have any interest in arguing about why or how the city should be built.>> If you "no longer have any interest in arguing about why or how the city should be built," how effective will you be in participating in the forum and helping to build the city? To my knowledge, not even a rough plan yet exists or has been approved for the layout of streets, parcels, parks, industries, the beach, shopping centers, etc. Will you build a city of your own design and invest your own funds to present your city at SIGGRAPH? <<It will get built according to the charter. I can promise you that. If other versions get built, I am no longer concerned as of Jan 15, 1995, I am moving forward with the city map and inviting anyone who can help to do so. Send messages to me by e-mail if you want to be included in what I am doing.>> Is this the equivalent of taking your ball and going home? Assuming the charter is ratified as written, how can you assure that the city will adhere to the terms of the charter? Citizens can change the charter by a simple majority vote which means that if only 10 people are deed holders, and 6 of those who may or may not have anything built on their parcels decide that all buildings will be inverted and mapped with canker sores, the city will consist of inverted, canker sore covered buildings. That would certainly be democratic, but I don't think you'd want to show it off at SIGGRAPH. The charter is too dynamic to allow any promises made to be kept. Why have you requested e-mail messages to be included in what you are doing? Are you relinquishing your forum flag in pursuit of your own private city? <<Finally, the resulting tapes will be for sale, not given away. Tape is not free and the money collected at Siggraph will go to pay for the costs of production. That is how it has to be done. If an angel appears and puts up the money for the tapes, that is fine. Any angel lurking about has been pretty silent so far except Matt Armstrong who offered to render the City for us. He did not offer tapes.>> It also costs money to present or sell anything at SIGGRAPH. I'm no (gag!) lawyer, but I can safely assume that everything using the SIGGRAPH trademark for promotional purposes at or away from the SIGGRAPH conference must require payment of a fee. How will those up-front marketing costs and fees be funded? Who will bear the expense of producing goods to be sold at SIGGRAPH and elsewhere? Who will share in any profits derived from sales of products produced by this project? How will those profits be divided? << Obviously I am tired of the controversy, and I am moving forward with the project. This is comming close to a "Tower of Babel".>> Perhaps you should step away from the project for awhile and try to regain your enthusiasm, some optimism, and some patience. Things can always seem quite confusing when studied too carefully or to intently for long periods of time. A little r&r couldn't hurt. …B.

ruce, Obviously, since I am here, I can't escape any of the consequences of the "push and pull" of building this project. My reasons for taking a rigid stance are twofold. One…to see to it that something gets done. Two…to take a solid, conservative stance in supo support of the Charter, in whatever form it is finally approved. You said you are reading it. Did you also read my opening comments requesting that people tell me what they would like to change and then we can vote on it? I asked for objections to specific Article, and specific line. Then we would set a referendum vote to change the charter to agree with what everyone wants. I am performing the role of City Clerk, trying to write down what everyone wants. The fact that I want the City to follow those specifications does not affect you if you want to change those rules. I am willing to wait much longer than a week now that people are looking at the charter. Is there a split in our community? You be the judge. If everyone reads and expresses their opinion on the charter, then no split has occured. I was beginning to believe that the Freedom fighters were here to throw out all we had done…the Survey came from messages on the forum. I did not invent them …I just tried to write them down as best I could. Still I am only a clerk and I am Very goal oriented. And I intend to ramain so. I am pulling for the City desired by the majority. But it has to have form and standards. It will soon, ibn in my opinion. Thanks. Sanford I did take a break, by the way, I took five minutes to drink some coffee.(g)

Sanford, I know that everyone appreciates all the time and effort that you've put into the SC2K project. Of course nobody says it, but I will. Thanks. On that same note, I wish that someone would just take this and start it and end all of this endless discussion. Sure, I hate the restrictions of these inane Zones, but someone must have liked them or they wouldn't have voted for them. I hate the Republicans too. If you would just go ahead with the city according to the charter then anyone and everyone can submit whatever they want and leave it to the citizens to reject it. This started out as a way for 3ds people to release their architect/artist alter-egos. It has turned into a way for 3ds people to release their politician alter-EGOs. Enough talk, lets render. Scaatt

Scaatt, You echo my feelings. I'm just waiting for the GO flag to wave so I can upload a proposed version of the City Map. The Sysop asked me not to upload it yet, the last time I mentioned. I think we are close to being cleared for take-off. Sanford

Hi Scaat, <<I wish that someone would just take this and start it and end all of this endless discussion.>> You aren't alone. Unfortunately, there's still nowhere to UL meshes, so there's little left to do but endlessly discuss what people write in messages here. Meshes can and should still be built while we wait and discuss. Build now, optimize later. <<Sure, I hate the restrictions of these inane Zones, but someone must have liked them or they wouldn't have voted for them.>> Now that's a curious statement. I hate all the restrictions, too, and I voted against zones in the survey, but more people wanted them than not. I don't know how the survey would turn out today with all the new interested parties voting. I'd be curious to see how many of those who voted on the first survey are still waiting quietly in the shadows for the project to take shape. I'm also curious to know how much the charter will change when all these new and old pilgrims exercise their rights to vote. If you really hate the restrictions, recommend that they be removed from the charter. You've got my full support. I'll vote with you for a zone-free city. <<If you would just go ahead with the city according to the charter then anyone and everyone can submit whatever they want and leave it to the citizens to reject it.>> I think everybody is chompin' at the bit to proceed with the project, but we still don't have an UL area. There's no charter yet either. What will be contained in the charter is still being debated. It still has to be ratified after all the changes are decided upon, so now is the time, your opportunity, to say what kind of city you want to help build. The clerks and scribes say they're listening and taking notes, and there's still plenty of time to voice your concerns. Waiting and watching …B.
