#VERSION 2.0 SUPPORT
15 messages in this thread
Someone's made an offer to sell me their V 2.0 of 3DS, essentially for
the price of their upgade, which I feel is a decent price for this version.
Will there still be support for earlier versions here (and this version needs
all the support it can get!), or is that going to be history here. Thanks.

Decent? That's a fantastic price for a full copy of 3DS 2.0 or
2.01a! However, I couldn't be quite sure exactly what you meant – is
your friend upgrading to Release 3 and selling you his old Release 2
when he does? If so, all legalities aside, remember that you don't
get a new hardware lock with an upgrade! Only one of them will be
usable, so be careful what you are buying!

Most questions from 3D Studio users are generic enough to apply to both
versions, although there will be specific features of 3 that have no comparison
in release 2.

Again, I'm not sure what you meant by this, but having used it professionally
for 1-1/2 years, the only disadvantage of release 2 is that it isn't release 3!
The program is stable and feature-rich, there were portions that many users
didn't even get a chance to master before release 3 came out!
Release 2 will keep someone happy for a while, at least until they can spare
the $497 for the upgrade to release 3!

Phil,
Two things; if the person has upgraded their R2 to R3, the license is still in
their name; you couldn't do anything "legal" with the old R2. Second, and of
more significance, the upgrade to 3 from 2 doesn't come with a new hardware
lock; you have to use the one that came with R2, so even if you got the R2
disks and manuals, you can't run it without the hardware lock, which would now
be on your friend's R3.
There might be an alternative, in that Adesk recently announced that 3DS R2
will be sold at certain educational institutions for $395; get in touch with
Autodesk for the number of a local Area Educational Representative for more
info.

John,
Can the upgrade to release 3 be applied from an "educational $395 copy of
release 2"? If so it could be a way to get release 3 for less than $900. I
know of dozens of people that would jump on this in this area. How do I get in
touch with this area rep? I want to get as many people into 3DS as possible
and a <$900 will surely do it. Think of all those mesh file generators needing
output service<$G$> to video that I could supply. On second thought, think of
all those that will now tout themselves as an animator just because they can
now afford to buy 3DS. UGH!
Don,
I doubt the educational R2 is upgradable, but I'm not sure exactly how they
deal with it. Try calling 1-800-964-6432 for the number of a local Area

John
Don,
Educational versions are NOT upgradeable.
Thanks for the definite answer. I kind of thought so.
If they're using their old copy of R2 to upgrade to R3, and then
selling you their R2 copy, it's illegal. In addition, they will not
receive a hardware lock with the upgrade, so they'll have to give you
a "broken" copy of R2 which, believe me, will give you mucho subtle
problems. If, on the other hand, they have a legit copy of R2 for
sale, you should make sure that that includes everything required for
an upgrade of your own, or you're stuck with an orphan.
As far as support, R2 doesn't need appreciably more support than R3.
You should be able to get support online here, but you'll almost
certainly be wanting to "upgrade" in short time.
Someone here has mentioned getting version 2 thru an education channel
for $395. What are the specifics of this?

We don't really deal with the distribution side of 3ds, but it looks like John
has the answer for you.

Hi,
You may not know me but I have a question for you sound like very
informamational in this topic. I'm trying to render images and Flics in 3DS2
and I want to render to 640×480 mode but the software I'm using obviously
doesn't support this mode. The question is that if there is a driver for
640×480 mode, do you know where I can get it? Appreciate your answer to my
question. I'll be expecting to hear from you soon.
You can use r2 to render almost *any* resolution images (and flics)
you wish, Marco. If your particular configuration does not support
the higher resolutions, just be sure to use the NULL driver when
rendering. This renders the files to *disk*, instead of to a
particular card or frame buffer.
What software are you talking about? 3DS r2 can render to any
resolution. Are you talking about display card drivers? What kind
of graphics card are you using? Have you tried the supplied VESA
driver? Vibrant Graphics makes drivers called PRORES/3D that support
many cards and are the best I used for 3DS r2.

You've already received to correct answers to your question. It's not
the software, but the hardware (along with software drivers) that
determines the limits of your display resolution. Nevertheless, you
can render to any resolution in 3ds, as long as you use a NULL driver
(in R2), or turn on the No Display button in R3. If you need a
different driver for your display board, and are using R2, I
recommend you contact Vibrant Graphics at 800/937-1711. If you're
using R3, you should look for your display board in the Vibrant
configuration menu when you first start 3ds.
