Ah… John Galt (sweat…sweat) – Wasn't he one of the protaganists of ATLAS
SHRUGGED? It's been years since I've read any of her fiction (and Atlas
Shrugged was the first I read – once about 4 years ago). Been reading her
"serious" (can she write otherwise??) books at my methodical pace for the
last year.
even though I value Objectivism as my philosophy – I'm not a very good
example of the ideal Rand-ian. Occasionally I degenerate into a "witchdoctor"
on some things. But I do get in rare form on some issues – and it all comes
out.
Now for MY question… are YOU reading Ayn Rand for self-education or
mud-slinging ammo? (now that I've spilled my guts…) Chris
Ayn Rand is my hero. (heroine?) You're right… Galt was the central character
in Atlas Shrugged. As you may remember 'Who is John Galt' was a slang
expression in the setting of the novel.
Right! – after you asked methat question I did a quick scan through my copy,
and kicked myself a few times for not being able to answer such an obvious
question. (though I'm no masochist)
Ever read "For the New Intellectual", or "The Virtue of Selfishness"? A lot of
ammunition for those inevitable arguments (even at the LP meetings!! You would
be surprised how many Libertarians, despite the name, are closet fascists or
pseudo-socialists). Personally, been trying to find copies of "Night of January
16th" and "We the living".
By the way, while I'm on the subject of Ayn Rand and Objectivism — have you
heard anything about that proposed (makes you want to spit) "National Public
Digital Radio".? From what I believe it will directly compete with CIS (and
all the private services), and I shouldn't have to explain to you (of all
people) what happens when the Gov. get's their grungy, bloodstained hands
into the free market! I've been calling all sorts of people at the FCC to get
some accurate information [in vain] – but from what I see there is some money
behind getting that particular law … the guys out in WA state that are
trying to run their own service apparantly, or maybe one of the
multinationals that wants to compete. In any case, if you are interested,
there are 2 files in Access [FCC1.DOC amd FCC2.DOC] that do a lot about
running around the truth. The guy pushing it is DON STONER.

Hadn't heard about the digital socialist radio yet. Thanks for the tip. Yes, i
have all her books, and everything else she's published. By the way, I was once
a libertarian, but when I learned the truth about the party, I got as FAR AWAY
AS POSSIBLE! Don't let them fool you!Ther ARE fascists! If you would like to do
a little reading along these lines, let me know.
Hmmm… And I thought it was just a few bad apples! Yes… can you make any
recommendations? (too bad – so many of them are pretty interested in Ayn too).
As for 'socialist digital radio' – been thinking of starting some sort of
organiation to wrk against it. Unfortunately – as an individual I have about 1
in a trillion chance of getting thegov. to listen – so I figured an
organization (all volunteer – no money solicited and all that) might be a good
hobby [and yes, it's in my self-interest as well as every other thinking
persons]. How does Ayn Rand stnd on such things? I don't think I could take
them to court?! –> chris

i had to take a lie detector test when i was applying for a gov't job
and the guy asked if i was ever involved in any Fascist orgs. My
reply was "what's a fascist?" i tend to favor Ayn Rand type ideas.

By the way, a quick quote from "FRONTLINES" a LP paper….. "Ayn rand's legacy
has been a tragic one… a conservatarian millstone around the neck of the
Libertarian movement. And that is why (we) say it's time to dissociate
ourselves from Rand and everything she stood for." Unquote. Food for thought?
Actually, what you just said in an eariler msg pretty much confirmed what I
always thought. I've always been uneasy about the fact that Libertarians have
always dissassociated ethics from personal actions and governmental judgement
(though in the latter case – go. had no ethics to begin with).
It also explains why I tend to argue more at LP meetings then anything else –
even though we have some of the same goals (free, pure capitalist society,
etc.). Your headline quote throws the light of truth on things – thanks for
keeping me from making a mistake.And yes, it's a regular banquet… –> Chris

Don Stoner is an Amateur radio operator. I beleive his proposal would allow
unlicensed operation of a low power UHF radio station for digital
communications. Something we 'HAMS' have been doing for years. Our 'packet'
radio links allow us to transmit digital data across the country and have the
data routed automatically to a desired destination. Pretty much the radio
equivalent of what Tymnet, Uninet & telenet currently do. In fact we use
essentially the same protocol X25A .

He's talking more about setting up a government subsidized net to transmit this
data – and to compete with private businesses.
Free enterprise can do it a lot cheaper – and CIS won't have to subsidize it's
competition to the detriment of services here. For an example of what may
happen as a result of something like this … read the history of what happened
to radio and TV when the FCC got into things. And you wonder why TV is so
bad!?! === Chris
I'm not familiar with thiset proposal but these 'free enterprise' discussions
are getting to me. I think you freedom to money people should do a little
reading about 19th century capitalism in the US. The unchecked power of the
owners almost drove the country into a revolution. 'Reformed' cCapitalism
became money with a human face, supposedly, to try to strike a little balance,
or save the country for the owners, depending on your point of veiw. As for the
FCC, 'free enterprisers' are now proposing to grant to current license holders
the right to buy and sell the airwaves. This would be the greatest giveaway of
public property to the profit of a privileged few in te history of the
Republic. Since the relaxing of FCC controls started the information content of
TV programming has decreased substantially and commercials and sit-coms have
started to produce ssme of the stupidest generations since Nero. In closing, it
is apparent that right wing factionalsim is as bad as that between the
sparticist league and the RCP, or any non-thinking strife groups you might care
to name.
He might go too far to the libertarian side, but do you really believe
that garbage you put up here? TV has deterioriated because it is no
longer required to censor itself. It is trying to reform America's
morals into it's own value set — i.e. no morals at all! Sorry to the
rest of you about adding to this nonappropriate subject. This stuff
belongs somewhere else.

huh? most of the stuff on tv looks pretty moralistic to me. Ever see the bad
guy win? ever? Cosby is heavy morality as is Family ties, Night Court, Hill
Street, even the fabled Love Boat. What are you talking about? TV is great. And
TV not only has to, but does indeed censor itself. What do you want Sesame
Street and the 700 hundred club all day. Relax. There is always that switch
there.

Right! – after you asked methat question I did a quick scan through my copy,
