#29417 #Sidecar Help Message #29453
From: John Draper AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 2:01 PM
Don, I think you may be thinking of the second 512K board that was supplied with the German designed A2000. It apparently fit the memory slot under the drive in the sidecar. It was an 86 pin board that went into the coprocessor slot in the A2000. -larry
From: Ariel Butler AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 12:43 PM
Betty: I think that drive is a Rodime. That's what I was told at a user group meeting, anyway. Ariel
#29160 Starboard II Message #29427
From: NEIL GOLDSMITH AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 10:36 AM
I just got a StarBoard II 1mb and I am having trouble loading Dungeon Master. I did the check on the Setup disk and everything was fine. Everytime I load Dungeon Master I get a software failure. I think Dungeon Master needs Kickstart 1.2 but starboard uses version 1.1. Any…

Heehe… on the other hand, in a very few years we'll be laughing out of the other side of our optical media, and bugging CBM for bigger partitions. 🙂 -larry
#29404 Sidecar Help Message #29418
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 3:21 AM
Steve, Whoops…just thought, maybe it's the 512K expansion card for the W. German A2000 that fits in the co-processor slot rather than the A501 that will fit the Amiga memory socket on the SideCar…or maybe the A501 and the 512K Card for the WG A2000 are the same. Don

From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 3:19 AM
Steve, I believe it was Hazy who said the A501 will fit the Amiga memory slot under the drive. It doesn't fit in the MS-DOS slots. Don
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 3:10 AM
Larry, Right…per partition…now where did I put that 4 Gig drive, I'll prep it to 2 partitions…that'll do the trick! Don

From: Steve Ahlstrom AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 1:01 AM
Get some sleep Don! There is no way the A501 works in the Sidecar. (Unless, of course, you mean to design your own board and recycle the 501's chips). -sja
#29364 Memory HELP!-THANKS Message #29396
From: John Draper AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 12:29 AM
Jay, Yes, it's an amazing thing, this radical idea of producing a good product and then supporting it with knowledge and courtesy. I don't know what the world is coming to, when companies that do it right can actually survive. 🙂 Agreed about the general flakiness. It's far worse than…
From: John Draper AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 8, 1989 12:07 AM
Don, Actually, the 2 gigabyte limitation is per partition. 🙂 -larry
From: Betty Clay/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 11:47 PM
Some dealers will take a 1000 in trade. Mine offers $400 for the 1000. That is probably about as much as you could get for the bare 1000 without a monitor or extra drive – but others here will probably know more about that than I. An ad in the…
From: Betty Clay/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 11:47 PM
Randall, Commodore has said that the 2000 will be their workhorse machine for a while to come, and that the new things will be available to 2000 owners on cards to add to the machine. They have been true to their word so far, and I think that will remain…
#29248 Memory HELP! Message #29365
From: JAY GREENBERG AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 11:10 PM
John, 71 MB should be enough for a while 😉 I have a 63 MB that's about half-full, so I still have a ways to go, but, always lookinghead, I am already pricing out an 80 MB in the Shopper! Really though, I love my 500, it has taught me…
#29218 #Memory HELP!-THANKS Message #29364
From: JAY GREENBERG AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 11:09 PM
Larry, I believe you are correct, in that the solidity of the product is not the sole means by which it should be judged. Technical support can sometimes alleviate many many problems that the novice would face, but, also the attitude of the company in dealing with their customers can…
#28997 Sidecar Help Message #29333
From: pat beaulieu AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 3:40 PM
What I know is that this memory board was done by a third party developper and that it does not autoconfigure and so have problems with certains softwares. Only a couple been done. PAt.
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 2:36 PM
Randy, You can use just about any disk drive you want…and there's no pratical size limitation (Actualy about 2 Gigabytes or so). You also have choices of controllers. The difference in price between the A2000 and the A2500 is that the A2500 comes with the A2620 co-processor board. Other than…
#29245 Zorro II on A1000 Message #29301
From: Jim Steele AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 10:30 AM
John, Thanks for the comments. It's good to hear the Phoenix Box is actually out there. I was kind of surprised to see they made an unpowered A500 box. From all the messages here, I gathered that the 500's power supply was barely up to powering itself much less a…
From: Randall Hitchens AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 8:45 AM
Betty – sorry for my confusion about model numbers. I guess I'm still trying to sort this all out for the first time myself. I thought a 2500 was just a 2000 with a hard disk (a 2000HD by your discription) and I was totally unaware of the huge difference…
From: Randall Hitchens AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 7, 1989 8:45 AM
Thanks, Phil. Your info is a nice combo of interesting new things to consider and muddying of the waters. From all I am hearing here in the forum, it sounds like the 1000 is a long run dead end. The cost of upgrading – no matter which route – is…

From: John Gager AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 11:55 PM
I agree with you Jay, the 500 is a nice computer, and when I had mine, was very reliable. But we both needed to expand it beyond what it is really capable of. I'm sure that with the proper buffering and termination, an expansion chassis can be made for the…

Jim, As a dealer, I to am monitoring the progress of the Pheonix Box… matter of fact, we have a couple of the A500 versions sans PS at one of our stores. Is there something I can 'look' for re- the buffering? 'fraid I don't know what that would be…
From: Betty Clay/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 10:50 PM
Randall, I wonder why they are telling you a 2500! If you really need the speed of a 68020 processor and 2M of 32-bit memory, and 2500 is nice, but I rather doubt that you are needing that speed (from what you've been telling us). I certainly do not plan…
From: joe couvillion AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 10:24 PM
I got a related question to add to the complexity, does a coprocessor board say a 68020 type count as another board or do they hook in on the 68000 socket? and can any one give a run down the coprocessor still on the market for the Amiga 1000? (I…
#29207 #Memory HELP!-THANKS Message #29218
From: John Draper AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 10:14 PM
Jay, Well, the solidity of the Insider is enough, in and of itself, to warrant high praise. Other memory boards were solid too, but there is more to it. Many boards were SOTS (Slap On The Side0 types, and would not work with other expansions, or would be a little…

Larry, pats on the back aside, why is it that the Insider REMAINS the number one choice for 1000 owners. Of course we all (Amiga Forum Members) know the reputation Dean has as being one of the top (sorry Dean, THE top 😉 designer of memory systems, but even those…

This isn't a direct answer, but may shed some light… or muddy things further. I've heard through 2 dealers that Phoenix Technologies is going to market a box that allows Amiga 1000s to use 2 Amiga 2000 cards. Said box has its own power supply and is supposed to sell…
#29076 Starboard II Message #29160
From: Karl Sparklin AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 3:03 PM
Jason, I have a SBII that was on my 1000 until I got a 2000, at which point I stuck it in there. I only have 1M stuffed so far. I have seen notices that you must populate the whole board with memory chips of the same access time, such…
Zorro II on A1000 Message #29146
From: Jim Steele AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 10:32 AM
I'd like to expand my A1000 using Zorro II cards in case I can upgrade the system to a 2000 some day. I keep seeing the Subsystem 1000 in various dealer's ads, but I see it's no longer in Pacific Peripheral's own ads. I have my doubts about the thing…
#28946 Memory HELP! Message #29141
From: JAY GREENBERG AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 9:13 AM
John, I know just how you feel. The frustration at *trying* to expand the 500 using 'makeshift' products like the Subsystem have driven me to the point that you have already reached, namely selling the 500 to get a 2000. I don't mean to badmouth the Subsystem, after all, it…
#28997 Sidecar Help Message #29139
From: Betty Clay/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 9:13 AM
Jim, I had a SideCar for a few months, but used it only sparsely. It did work with my Escort2 box, but everyone tells me that was a miracle. It does work with the Insider from Michigan Software, everyone tells me. I just gave my SideCar to a very special…

From: Jeff Wilbourn AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 6:13 AM
Ken, You asked me to let you know what happens in regard to the SubSystem1000. After a couple of calls it seems that the release date keeps slipping back further and further. Right now they have no idea when it'll be released. -jeff
#28997 Sidecar Help Message #29102
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 1:16 AM
Jim, Supposedly…the expansion for the A500 (A501 I believe) can be used in the SideCar. Other than that…CBM never brought out a memory expansion for SideCar (nor did anyone else). Don
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 12:36 AM
Bill, Well…you could always discuss a trade in with your dealer…you might be surprised. If that doesn't work, find out what they'll sell you an A2000 with HD controller for. Then figure how much you'd need for you A1000 plus those add-ons you'd no longer need if you had an…

From: John Draper AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 6, 1989 12:10 AM

From: Randall Hitchens AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 11:35 PM
Right you are, Betty! So, here's another question… It is being suggested that if I want to expand my A1000 with hard disk, more memory, and possibly a bridge board that I *may* do better to just trade in the 1000 for a 2500. To judge well, I would need…

From: Dean Brown AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 10:21 PM
Jay, Glad to help. (also glad I pointed you to the right chip) I've heard the same comment many times about the Insider. I'm happy that the board is as solid as it is, since I use it all the time in my own A1000. (and forget about it as…

We all learn from each other, Randall. That's what makes this a great place. We also learn from each other's *questions*. Without questions, there wouldn't be much discussion, would there? Betty
From: Greg Marquez AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 7:02 PM
Betty, Thanks for the info. Anyone out there have first or second hand experience with a "Bill's Board" add on? (WHat I'm getting at is "is it reliable?") Thanks. Greg Marquez 71777,2612
#Sidecar Help Message #28997
From: Jim Vishoot AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 3:07 PM
I have an A-1000 with a Sidecar. According to the Sidecar manual, Amiga expansion memory can be added to the Sidecar. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it work properly? What memory boards can be used? Would this be the way to go, or should I consider an…

Hey Dean, good news! I changed chip U54 (now deceased 😉 and it works perfectly, you were right on the money. I hope this ends my memory woes! Wanted to tell you something though, I spoke to a friend who happens to have a 1000 with an Insider in it.…
From: William Crabb AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 8:58 AM
Thanks for the input. Swapping the order hasn't helped. The RAM boards I was thinking about was a board that went inside the Supra interface, but apparently they made very few of them. Another possibility I've been thinking about is replacing the Supra interface with the Starboard SCSI board which…
#28418 #Memory HELP! Message #28946
From: John Gager AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 3:30 AM
Jay, I found out the hard way that the best way to expand a 500 beyond one board was to get a 2000. I had a SubSystem 500 and when I just had the 2052 memory board plugged in, everything would work fine. But when I added the 2090 controller,…

Tom, As I have stated all along….while many users have 2 and more add-ons on an A1000…there is no guarantee that any one particular A1000 will work with any more than 1 add on device. There are quite a few cases of folks having the PALs grounded and still not…
From: Don Curtis/SYSOP AmigaTech · Expansion Hardware January 5, 1989 12:54 AM
Bill, you've run into the major limitation of the A1000. It was only designed for ONE add-on device. That device can be a box or a board. My only suggestion to you is to swap the order of the add-ons if possible…that sometimes helps. A RAM board that goes inside…
