>>with a little forethought, I was able to "build" a complex object… Hey, If I'm paying this much for the software, I shouldn't have to THINK, that's what COMPUTERS are for!!!… oops. sorry. … and for my next trick, I'm going to chew gum and model at the same time.…

>>configure my Wacom under 3DS… I have a SD420E. Hey Bill, I've got the same model, and I use the puck under mouse emulation in 3ds, and just about everything else too (I haven't had a mouse hooked up since I got the tablet two years ago). Of course, once…

#Meshpaint Brushsize?
Message #161682
Well, consider the ability to support more than one set of coords on a single object a wish list item for an update. This is (at least for me) a very important feature that would help out tremendously in painting complex forms, and I was greatly dissapointed to see it…
I've been messing aroung with the Meshpaint demo and I keep running into a limitation it seems to have. Is it by design that you can only have one set of mapping coords applied to any single object? When I have an object with more than one set of coords…
>>Are the rumours true… Yup, they be true. News can sure travel fast. We'll be posting an official announcement here shortly. Stay tuned… David
Thanks Greg. I did a little reading today and found out a little more about the various unix archive formats. Interesting… David
Thanks. I was having trouble with pctar because I couldn't figure out how to tell it to read the tape drive… I didn't realize it would see it automatically by default. Now If I could only do a directory of the tape to see what's on it without having to…
>>WinZip… Thanks, I do seem to remember seeing something on that. I use Winzip all the time, and If I could get the new one to read Tars directly off of the Exabyte, it would be a wonderful thing. David
#TAR to PC software
Message #159752
Hi all, I'm in need of some software that will read a Unix Tar archive off of an Exabyte drive and dump/unarchive to dos. I got some utilities from the Unix forum on CIS, but I would like some advice from anyone who knows as to which is the best…
>>the mesh is very similar to the displaced head… Very true. David
>> Note Glenn's Displaced monk head on the cover.. 🙂 Sorry, I don't see it anywhere on or in the current issue (Dec, 94). ??? David
>> I wonder if there is a util that will enable us to join the 24 bit and the 8 bit together ?? You can do this in 3ds. In video post, load an IFL listing the 24 bit TGAs in the queue. In the alpha slot for the entry…
I swear I don't know much at all about these chips, really… I swear… All I know is that the Glint is a 3d graphics processor chip that will be integrated into several reasonably priced (I assume) graphics cards by various vendors. The chip itself is made by 3D Labs.…
>> I only need to blur the 3d model and the asscoiated matte. Just run the blur filter over the scene, but render with alpha and set "split alpha" to yes. Then bring in the alpha frames that were created by the split, and run blur over those too, with…
>>Let me know… I'm not the one to ask, as I don't know much at all about these new cards, other than what I read in CGW and the like. All I do know is that I hold high hopes for any promise of better realtime interactivity when working with…
It was a single page newsletter of sorts. Here is the sidebar in full, "3Dlabs and the technology component division of Autodesk are partnering to port and optimize Autodesk's 3D software to the Glint family of graphics processors. The first result of this partnership will be a no charge bundle…
In Video post, just put the two entries in like you would in a normal composite, and in the alpha slot for the second entry, use a 50% grey still image as an RGB mask. You'll then get a 50/50 superimposition of the images. David
>> The Perspective Match/ Camera Control… I haven't played much with the 3d editor side of the previewer, as I have not had the need for that yet, it is the animation previewer I'd love to see a little more usable. >> "realtime", openGL, New cards, SGI…..Waiting to buy your…
I just noticed a flier from 3D labs (the Glint people) saying that they have partnered with Adesk to "port and optimize Autodesk's 3D software to the Glint…". Who knows if 3DS is included with that, but I'd like to think so. David
>>I can't ramble on about this any more without breaking my confidentiality obligations. Sorry. I can't imagine how difficult it must be sitting around here listening to the various complaints that roll by, and not being able to say a word to anybody about it, even though you may be…
Thanks for the info. David
Me too, but I hear it is very time consuming to process. I also hope the price is reasonable. I just found out the price of Rayman…. $1000! I guess I won't be getting that one. David
Thanks for the info on Seez and the Z-buffer. It's good to know that programmers can use the data and change it to suit their needs. I can't wait for some of these new routines to start popping up. David
>>Do you have a particular card in mind for the wishlist? The cards I was thinking about are not out yet. I'm hoping for direct support for the new 3D rendering chips (the Glint, among others I've read about, that are to be integrated into new graphics cards), so that…
>>I hope DavidS jumps in and elaborates a little for everyone… What, and spoil the suprise? Ok, time for a shameless plug… All the details are in chapter 12 of "3D Studio special effects" Using the Z-buffer as a mask in video post, an object can be made to fade…
>>atmosphere-like effects. David Stinnett has this method down cold, so if he's around…. Hi Gary, I'm still checking in when I can (which isn't near as often as I would like). I DL'ed the Z-buffer IPAS and it seems it will -not- work for doing the comp effects you mentioned.…
>>1. It doesn't show morph (morph from A to B it only shows A), etc, etc… It also can't render instance objects in the keyframer, and it completely chokes on anything but simple scenes. I had high hopes for the previewer, but unfortunately I haven't found it very useful yet.…
Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but my schedule for the past few weeks has kept me from tuning in here except for a quick scan every few days. There are several ways to dealing with "pinching" maps at the ends of meshes. On something like a dolphin I would detach…
>> Pshop 3.0 online up there in Irvine and can tell us if it supports the Alpha info in a 3DS 32-bit TGA… The present version (2.5.1) fully supports alpha in a 32 bit TGA. David
>>Hey don't blame the Amiga. I'm not blaming the Amiga for anything. I have no idea how sliders work on the Amiga, all I know is that the sliders in the new PC PAR software are a pain to use if there are a large number of files in the…
>>How is the new scrub bar? It's a bit better, but I still like the old one much more. The old one allowed me to easily and accurately drag the slider through an animation of any length, at any speed, matching my mouse movement exactly, forward or backwards, and in…
I would like to add my vote for a 3DS "on the fly" res/color changing utility. With more and more developers coming out with routines that all but require 24 bit GUI and others that all but require 8 bit, a dislplay changing utility could be a very useful and…
>> Try the 1.30b version… Thanks, I'll let you know what happens. David
Brick, I've been meaning to call you guys about the new frame slider, but haven't had the chance. I don't know if it's working the way it should, because the older one works MUCH better. The old one would respond VERY accurately to my mouse moves, whether they were slow…
I do hope they change this. If this bugs anyone else, I hope they speak up so DPS will consider this. David
If you want to stop and start animations without taking your eyes off the par output monitor, just leave your fingers on the P and S keys on your keyboard, then stop and play to your hearts content. A list of the hot key controls is listed in the readme…
In Burbank, until just recently there was "Chow's Kosherama". And in Little Tokyo, LA, there is (or at least was) a little curry resturant that had a sign on the door with the hours of business listed, and the bottom read (spelled exactly this way, I swear) "Crosed on horidays".…
Thanks, that's what I thought. Drive prices are coming down nicley, I've noticed a couple 1.08 gig drives now available for less than $600. Now if only the price of RAM would do the same… David
In R3, raytraced shadows will interact with transparent objects properly. The only drawback is that raytraced shadows can only have sharp edges. Are you using R3? David
Is the Quantum just your every-day scsi drive, or is there something unique about it? I'm just curious, since it seems there was some sudden interest when the name was brought up. David
>>Bones w/o morph objects… If you can pull it off, it will be well worth the delay. 🙂 David
From page 5 of the Disk 6 manual, at the start of the Skin tutorial…. "NOTE: Although you can assign other types of mesh objects as templates for Skin, we strongly recommend that you use the 3D Lofter to make your template objects. Skin uses the order of the vertices…
>>May I suggest this as an add-on feature from Vibrant? That's actually not a bad idea. I know it can't happen as part of the package in R4… but an add-on sure beats waiting till R5! As an add-on it could even be packaged with Liquid speed… and therefore be…
>>$700 I'm sure it's MUCH more than that, I might call just to see. It is nice though, much better than some of the other dino stuff they've got on their CD.
>>Fortunately, it will run under 8-bit displays. So you can have your cake and eat it too. Well, Eyebrowse "runs" in an 8 bit display too, but it aint pretty and it aint fast. Does mirage like 8 bit more than Eyebrowse does? David
Download Humpbk.zip from library 5, which is a TGA of a realistic humpback whale with very detailed textures, then Whale.txt (I think) from library 3, which is a compilation of messages about how I did it, including the mapping methods used. I've never downloaded the text file myself, so I…
>>Things *are* getting more complicated! By the day even! It would be REAL nice if Gary (with Vibrant, of course) could squeeze "on the fly display switching" into the program asap, especially as more and more "picky" IPAS stuff comes out. David
>>David, whenever you tell Eyebrowse to do a build for a directory, it will check for any stray thumbs and get rid of them. Ah, so the way to keep things clean is to just re-build the directories every once in a while? This brings me to another point… I…
The following is part of a reply I made to someone else with the same question a few days back. It should give you the basics on how to do a rack focus effect with the Yost Blur IPAS routine: " A rack-focus effect using the Blur IPAS in its…
>>Hey! maybe Vibrant will come up with a "hot key" driven display driver that will change resolutions on the fly :-). I like that idea, especially if we're going to be getting different IPAS's requiring different display depths. Jonas, can you take this one down as an official wishlist item?…
