#Animating a glacier
Message #152021
I have a job to animate a glacier retreating over a landscape. If anyone has any tips or thoughts on the subject I'd love to hear them. Ian.
Pyromania!
Message #151808
A while back I read that someone was looking for a CD rom called Pyromania. Well I just came across it. Its available from Educorp 1-800-843-9497. I believe that its a disk full of fire and explosion animations appropriate for texture mapping. I'll let you know for sure – I…
Gary, Pardon me for butting in, but I've been looking for that book. Who publishes it? Ian.
Jonas, Sorry, I think I had a case of late-night cross-eyes and a compositing job that was getting a little unmanageable. As a feature request: it would be nice if the video-post window were resizeable so I could make it full screen size and see more of large queueing jobs.…
#VP problem
Message #151163
I'm having some really strange problems with Video Post. I'm trying to overlay a still image at various points in an animation. The trouble is at certain points this image just refuses to composite. For instance, it works fine at frame 235, but not at frame 85. If I extend…
RE: Microsoft System Journal article. Thanks for the tip. That's one I wouldn't want to miss. Ian.
Blob ipas. Great news. I'm a graduate student just starting my thesis which will be an animation involving some animals. My plan is to create the critters with blob and animate them with the BOnesPro deformation IPAS. Suggestions- be able to load a background reference bitmap image to model over.…
#Fast Preview?
Message #148836
I have a Pentium 90 with 64 megs of ram and an ATI pro turbo adapter which is pretty fast in all respects except with the new Camera/ Preview module in 3DS4. I can't get a frame rate above 2fps even with an animation consisting of only a cube and…
Re: Monterey problem I had the same thing . It has to do with BIOS settings re. the 32k address space. I can't remember the exact proceedure for fixing it but I'll take a look in my BIOS to see if it might jog my memory. The TB people seem…
I've gotten the same problem WITH v1.34b. Other problems too. I've got plenty of cooling. I think DPS has flakey software. Ian.
I'm getting that corrupt data stuff too. The field reversal thing is sort of annoying but the trashing of animations is potentially devastating. And its happened to me a few times. Ian.
Do you shell to DOS? I've gotten corrupt PRJ files when I shell to DOS then later save the project. When I try to load the same project later…Whammy! Ian.
#3DE Editor?
Message #142244
anyone know where to find the 3DE dialog box editor? Can't seem to locate it. Ian.
That upgrade pricing is different that previously announced. Autodesk was offering a $150 upgrade price to those upgrading before the release date. What happened to that offer? Ian.
What were your "costly misunderstandings with In-Synch"? Ian.
Who's seen RazorPro @AU?
Message #137716
RE: Gallery Effects. I think that should be version 1.5.1, I had 1.5 and could not get it to work with Photoshop despite several conversations with Aldus/Adobe people, until I finally found someone who knew the scoop.
Marshall, Where are you located? Ian.

#Animator Studio
Message #136861
March, that's a long ways from the "December" that was quoted at the Autodesk seminar that I attended. What happened? Ian.
You can convert a flic to quicktime in premiere for windows. But you have to then load and resave the movie in Premiere for Mac before Director will recognise it. Either that or export a series of TGAs then convert them to PICTs and load those as cast members. Ian.
RE: Plato bios w/SCSI Thanks! Ian.
Why is this bios upgrade deeded for SCSI? Ian.
Thanks, Sounds like I have a bum motherboard. I'll see if I can replace it. Ian.
Darn, my P5-90 is choking seriously! Ian.
#P5-90 optimize
Message #121835
I remember a thread recently concerning speed optimizing Pentium 90 machines. I just bought a Pentium 90 mb and it turns out to be a little less than twice the speed of my 486-66 for rendering (no disk swap.) Is this all I can expect? I was hoping for more.…
Great news Chuck, Might get that new ATI now! Ian.
All Pentiums or just the "low-end" 60mz and 66mz's? They must be gearing up to toss out the 150's. Ian.
I have one. I'd suggest returning it. Ian.
Jamie, re:rotating user view perpendicular to screen. whew, glad its not just me. But maybe someone at adesk might consider this for a wishlist item. Ian.
Gus, Are you sure its not 2.2? I think Greg once recommended 2.2 (though maybe he was refering to PAR). I'm a little nervous because I'm doing my first broadcast animation and I don't want to have to pay for a tape transfer twice — or rerender! My contact at…
#User view struggles
Message #118646
I find that I often need to rotate a USER VIEW window around the axis perpendicular to the screen. But I find it difficult to rotate the tripod without effecting the other axes — even with angle snap on. I can't seem to get the rotation I need using the…
John, re Abekas/Exabyte output. What do you set the gamma at? Ian.
I've had this experience also. The only thing I could think of was that it was a problem of memory fragmentation. Could you work in smaller segments then piece them? Ian.
Connie, Let me know how it goes. I may need to get another tablet and I'd appreciate hearing your experience. Ian.
I have a Calcomp DB II. It does NOT work in absolute mode in 3ds. Also the pressure sensitive support is far less than with a Wacom. ie not pressure suport with ani pro. Also the pen eats up hard to find baterees. Had I to do it over again…
bad flic build
Message #115151
Help! I'm trying to build a flic from targa frames (0-800 by 2) in VP but it keeps quitting after fram 400 saying that it can't find frame 1. The black line in the VP graph only goes as far as fram 400. Do I have to renumber the TGA…
Primitive Coords
Message #113672
Ever think of adding built-in mapping coordinates to primitive objects? Ian.
Do you think that swapping out to Ani Pro might have done it? Ian.
Tried that. No go. Ian.
#missing objects
Message #113007
I've been working with a 3ds file that has suddenly lost an object. The name of the object still exists but it does not appear on the screen — nor does it render. If I select it with the H key I can move it around but it still does…
#Portable IPAS?
Message #111745
Gary, If 3D Studio were to be ported to another operating system (hypothetically speaking, of course) would all the IPAS routines need to be rewritten? Ian.
I think I missed the original message. could you repeat? Ian in NYC.
Thanks, I'll give it a try. Ian.
Gary, Apparently my first upload regarding my opacity problems went astray before anyone had a chance to peruse it. After checking David Marks' suggestions I discovered my current problem was indeed caused by NEW-SUBTRACTIVE-TRANSPARENCY. Switching it off solved the problem. But why doesn't it work with the new method? I…
I did, several weeks ago. Got no answer. Ian.
#Opacity Hell
Message #106962
Gary, I'm still having problems with the opacity maping in 3ds3. Several weeks ago I uploaded a sample project to demonstrate the effect. To sum it up, under certain conditions (I'm not sure what they are) opacity mapping fails — ie. areas that should render transparent do not. Sounds like…
Babraham Lincoln? She's a Babasaurus! I'd certainly be willing to do a little dithering on the side. Ian.
How 'bout converting the other way? I'd sure love to import Typestry models into 3DS. Ian.
Gary, Choices, choices. Howbout incorporating universal animation curve editing into R4? Ian.
John, The way I convert TGAs to Applle QT is to – 1) Create a QT movie from sequencial TGAs in Win Premiere 2) Open the Win QT file in Mac Premiere then resave it (to Mac QT). Although Mac and Win QT files are not compatible Mac Premiere can…
