Just as a note regarding these password problems. Schreiber is shipping all new IPAS routines without protection to registered users. Some existing products will be shipped in early 1995 in unprotected form automatically to registered users. All routines as they are updated will also be released in unprotected format to…

Get a FREE PLUG-IN CD ROM full of convertible demos of all the Schreiber Plug-Ins. Yes FREE, but not for long. This offer will be available for a limited time on a first come – first served basis That is when we have depleted our overstocked inventory of SIGGRAPH 94…

Hello Again- I have a significant amount of material to contribute to the forum but am finding their isn't enough room? Will there be more room soon or is that in the plans? Scot Susmann
We are here… Information on QuickSurf at 1-800-252-1024. We also have a couple of dealers up here… Greg?
The richter scale is logrithmic.. 5.0 is 10x more powerful then 4.0 6.0 is 100x more powerful then 4.0 7.0 is 1000x more powerful then 4.0 6.6 compaired to 4.2 is a huge difference. The 6.6 quake I think ranks it about the 5th most powerful in the states this…
Ed, You use both. If the object is metal use a metal shaded material. If the object is not metal then phong is more then likely the best choice. The metal shader has a completely different highlight curve. Check this out by creating a phong shaded material with shininess and…
Dale, Autovision is using ray traced shadows and the high number of faces in the scene will cause the shadow calculation to slow the rendering time way down. Tree foliage faces are very bad for ray tracers as the number of levels of faces they need to work though is…
Steve, We more than likely have something. Check our BBS at 303-759-3598. If you don't find anything just leave the sysop a message.
ARA, I agree with Greg, you will need to know C. There is plenty of help here to get you kicked off if you decided to go for it. Gus G. is always up and is alot of help. Several other people up here are also working with IPAS now.…
Joakim, We distribute the Yost IPAS. I will check on this right away for you. Should be able to do alot better than a month. Schreiber Instruments 303-759-1024
Mike, We carry 3 arc second topo data for the whole lower 48 states available on a 3 CDROM set. May be able to source one region as well. We have done alot of terrain data. Call 1-800-252-1024 (303-759-1024) ask for Ward.
Hard to tell where anyone's from on CIS. That makes you about number six on the list. It is just with the growth of the 3DS market if there a software product that sells elsewhere to enhance animation someone will create a 3DS version. Keith.
I second that Alec. A "simulation" is an entirely different process than an animation. Although, with the next couple generations of PC's and multiple processer support from the OS, PC's will begin to make in roads in the simulation market as well. Keith.

If you are in the states call 1-800-252-1024 else 303-759-1024 for our lastest catalog. You can also check with your multimedia dealer. They may "own the market" now but the numbers will be in favor of 3DS down the line. The pricing structure for IPAS routines is way below the…
I have seen VisLab too. They tend to run it on a $80k+ Crimson Box. If you are seeing Reality Engine Graphics add $50k. Any software will look very good running on this type of hardware. That does not make it ten times faster than an equal dollar value of…
Will that be Watcom 9.5 or 9.01 ? For our ADS development we are using Watcom because of there are several bugs in the High C 3.0x compilier. We had a very bad time getting High C 1.7x code just to compile with 3.0x. We also could never get the…
David, We have a free 3DS BBS system which is connected to FidoNet. Anyone is welcome to use, plenty of space available. Happy Canyon BBS 303-759-3598 14400 or lower.
No, I think Montana has 2 3DS souls and a whole lot of sheep.
Nicholas, We are much closer then he would have you believe. We provide 3D Studio software today to build the entire crash environment. We can setup an entire site in a matter of hours in complete 3D and render ready. The only missing piece at this point is the crash…
The very best source is "Curves and Surfaces for CAGD" by Dr Farin. by Academic Press.
Bob, Imagine Sun can do all of that. You can place multiple sun's into the same scene but you would be responsible for turning off the sun's you do not want for each rendering. The multiple sun option could be used for "off world" animators for more than one sun…
Thank You, couldn't have said it better myself. All of our Imagine line of programs work with R3 short of Interface which will require an overhaul. Keith.
Gus, I also have a copy of that SDK gathering dust in my basement. If developers made the user load OS/2 to buy that app then those same users would call the developer for support on everthing they did not understand about OS/2. A software developer would become burdened with…
OK more machines today. When the current Windows 3.1 based Apps release a true Windows NT version those Windows 3.1 users will follow. Hardware is shipped with Windows already installed how do compete with that? We, as a software company, have regular requests from existing users today for Windows software.…
Doug, As a programmer I agree use the best OS available. I would go with IRIX. X windows with motif along with open GL and Inventor are very hard to beat. The "marketing guys" would never base a product on the need to switch peoples operating system. A large public…
John, We also offer Imagine Sun which even creates a spot light sun object. Includes complete animation control and retails for $99. Keith. BTW. Greg P. can sell this too.
I second (third?) the software / hardware split of some kind.
With Windows shipping with almost every PC sold, the Windows NT / OS-2 war was over before Windows NT reached final release. The current Windows users will begin to move to Windows NT as soon as the common apps are ported. As software developers we looked at both Windows NT…
Doug, 3DS is a native 32 bit program. It will use every bit of RAM you can stuff in a PC as flat memory. The Phar-Lap DOS extender "reboots" the processor into 32 bit protected mode. I am not looking forward to the time when 3DS is not a DOS…
I have not tried VisualLink with R3 but the R3 file has a version change which may cause VisualLink to skip all of the objects. BTW, only the final release contained this change so the beta releases did still work. Keith.
Payne, Will you support .SXP, .BXP, .cel & .fli/.flc file formats for inputting texture maps? What about calculating the object positions at different frames? A ray tracer could be an .IXP but you would also need to read the current 3DS file of the scene for some of the information.…
I hadn't thought of poster size. The image buffer would be very large you still need the capacity on each machine to handle the entire model. BTW, you are talking (typing?) to an IPAS developer and no the process is not possible in the R2 IPAS release. Someone with more…

Thanks I was looking just for that…
Remember weitek is no longer supported under R3. Keith.
I haven't tried your rendering regions but I would expect the savings to be very small. The bulk of the data (memory) is used for the objects, texture maps, shadow maps. Without slicing up the model itself the only savings I see would be with image buffer itself. Not much…
The 80's were the decade for CAD. The 90's are the decade for 3D. The current momentum of hardware and software innovations will bring us to an interactive threshold that we can only dream about today.
Well said. If you feel a routine is problem because you have to teak it a dozen times, remember the developer ends up running it easily hundred fold that. All the possible uses and options on these types of routines can not be checked. Some times the unplanned "features" of…
I understand that functions are not being developed while you are working on 3D Studio. The edge I refer to is the creative process which must occure before any coding occures. When developing a program, while working on one segment, solutions to other problems often are found. This covers the…

True, and each new developer adds a new direction. For example, the design people have different needs then the medical imaging people. These veritical markets are to small for AutoDesk to provide products for. Each of the vertical markets requires staff which are experienced and understand those specific needs. To…
John, It is true that Yost Group will always hold the edge for IPAS development, after all they write the program. The delayed IPAS release means that developers will have to take the interface "as is" regardless of weather it works or not because the final release is already in…
The diffences in the hardware is reflected in the hardware cost and performance. The workstations have dedicated swap partitions running full 32 bit and processor speed. They also have custom engineered graphics boards which are optimized with the processor. They also may use multiple processors. Windows NT brings (I have…
