Joe, Before you buy, make sure that you can access all the names on the CD without paying any additional per/name charges. Bryan/DAK
Paul, We're constantly evaluating new drives. Our lab has most of the drives talked about in this forum. It's just kinda hard to convince Drew to change drives when we are selling them faster than we can get our hands on them. But as the market changes we'll certainly be…
Jerry, Thanks for the information. We're going to set up a Lantastic network for one fo the groups at DAK. We'll probably add a couple of CD-ROM drives, too. Bryan/DAK
To add to the rumor mill, I've heard there is a company developing a software solution — it's a special disk cache (like SMARTDRV) that works only with the CD-ROM, thus increasing the total buffer from 8K to anything you want. Bryan/DAK

third bundle ?
Message #17024
Judy, The third bundle includes National Geographics Mammals, Audubon's Bird of America, and Audubon's Mammals, plus the Family Doctor. All four are $129.90 plus $7 postage and handling. This bundle is only available with purchase of our BSR CD-ROM drive (if you already own our drive you should be getting…
Barry, It's too early for me to say how MM will affect our existing hardware. There still aren't enough MM applications available. Not much to play with. Lots of different things being discussed, though. A lot depends on what Windows 3.1 includes in terms of sound support. We're no longer…
Try a couple of y-adapters from Radio Shack. Bryan/DAK There is 1 Reply.
What's the BBS number? I'd like to download 2.21. Bryan
Joe, I would recommend that you call our Canoga Park (Calif) store and check the availability and shipping. Sorry, I'm at home and don't have the number memorized or I'd give it to you. Too bad you're not in this area. We often have products in the store that aren't…
Barry, Haven't heard anything yet. I'll let you know as soon as I get the news. Bryan/DAK There is 1 Reply.
Joe, I wish I could give you more technical information on this, but all I know is that we bought a quantity of NEC CD-ROM drives a while back. We're just selling them through the store at the moment. They have a SCSI interface card and should have everything you…
Buz, I'm not familiar with the P70. You might try calling our software support line and ask them, but as far as I know we don't have any adapters for sale. The Zenith might be okay. You could always try it and send it back if it doesn't work. Bryan/DAK…
Walt, All the information is in the catalog. If you don't have the lastest copy, call 1-800-DAK-0800 and they'll send one out to you. Thanks for your interest. Bryan/DAK
Steve, Before you try recording from the RCA jacks, first try just running those outputs into your amplifier to make sure they work. I can't think of any other reason they wouldn't work. You might also unplug anything from your headphone jack. Larry Payne, the author of the programmable music…
Steve, The RCA jacks on the back of the drive are the stereo line outputs . These are the outputs you should be connecting to the line inputs of your tape recorder because they offer the correct output level. The headphone jack is designed to drive headphones only — you'd…
Bill, New bundles are offered to existing customers via a special direct mailing that goes out after the bundle is announced in the catalog. Bryan/DAK
Malcom, All I can tell you is that we are closing out some NEC drives through our retail stores. These are drives we bought in too small a quantity to devote an entire page to in the catalog. Bryan/DAK There is 1 Reply.
Bob, We haven't sent out cards yet on the third bundle. We need a little time to create the mailer, but I'll let you know when it goes out so you can watch for it. Bryan/DAK
No, the drive we sell is external and really isn't meant to be operated out of its case. It does have standard RCA line outputs on the back and includes a couple of different programs for playing regular music CDs. Bryan/DAK
Dwight, You're way ahead of me. That's the first I've heard that we sell the caddies separately! Bryan/DAK There is 1 Reply.
Wall Street Journal

There is a good article on CD-ROM in today's (11/21) Wall Street Journal. The column is "Personal Technology" by Walter Mossberg. Check it out if you can. Bryan/DAK
DAK's $225. CDROM
Message #14909
Bob, Well, we might create a catalog number just so people from out of the area can buy the drive. However, it's still just a limited quantity that really only intended to sell through our retail outlet. Funny though, one day our store sold new, 300-baud accoustic modems for $3…

The term "multi-media" has been in use since the first time anyone ever added sound to a slide show. Mammals and other products with sound (including some awesome games soon to be released) are multi-media products that have nothing to do with the "multi-media PC" or "multi-media extensions". Their sound…
Ed, The BSR is not a SCSI drive. It uses a proprietary Sony interface. You can daisy chain additional Sony 6201 drives, but obviously no SCSI devices. Some people here are looking into a possible upgrade on the buffer size. Not sure if this possible, but will let you know…
Adrian, I'm sorry, but we don't sell outside the U.S. Bryan/DAK
Dwight, I don't really know anyone in particular to tell you to talk to. I do know they have the disk, and if you tell them you want the new Sony CD-ROM drivers, version 2.2, that fixes the problem with Mammals, they should know what to send you. If you…
Dwight, It depends which CD-ROM drive you have. Version 2.2 of the MSCDEX/Sony drivers fixes that problem on the external BSR CD-ROM drive (Sony 6201). However, some earlier BSR units used the Sony 510 drive which doesn't support the oddball track suppression used in Mammals. Instead of making a true…
Mark, Thanks for your comments. Glad to hear that you're enjoying the product. Bryan/DAK
Keith, I believe the next catalog will start mailing at the end of next week. I can't comment on the contents until it hits the streets, though. Bryan/DAK
Ed, I haven't run into that problem. Best to call the technical support line and see if they have any info. Bryan/DAK There is 1 Reply.
Larry, As you have probably discovered, companys don't put rocket scientists on the customer service phone lines. In DAK's case I feel the overall company has an exceptional knowledge of CD-ROM, but that doesn't mean that all 100+ support people have gotten up to speed yet. You would not believe…
Larry, If Compton released three confusingly similar of their Encyclopedia, you should be blaming them for the confusion, not the distributors ("retail outlets") who are just trying to sell the product. Likewise, distributors don't create or analyze MPC specs nor do they have the time or staff to test every…
Glen, Sorry, there are currently no plans of DAK offering the CDU-541. We only sell a relatively small number of different products — but in large volume. Just the nature of our business. If your heart is set on the 541 you should be able to locate it through some…
Ed, I can't announce the titles yet, but you'll seeing bundle #3 in the next catalog. We've also got bundle #4 pretty well nailed down, although it probably won't be announced until the following catalog. We've sent out thousands of surveys to CD-ROM customers asking them which applications they use/don't…
Tom, I finally figured it out, and when I did I got MAD. That file is downright PATHETIC! I can't believe I wasted so much connect time downloading it. If anyone else is reading this, don't bother! Bryan
