I've been following this garbage about changing, moving, & removing messages here, but have missed some of the stuff as well. In the last week or so, I left an *EXTREMELY* detailed reply to H.B. Siegel of Wavefront regarding Real 3D vs 3DS, and I believe you must of read…

No, I think *brain* impediment is more accurate. Going through relocation, divorce, property settlement, career changes, etc… Get the picture ?
#86997 GRIDS,etc. Message #87440
I was kind of …..wondering….. about that.
#86978 FOG Message #87439
In what I was describing, I actually wanted to pass through layers of varying density fog (gas clouds in space). Have to dig out "the book" and look up layered fog, as I can't remember ever using it. Will try it out soon.
Spline Types Message #87406
Hi All, Since I've seen some questions here regarding Bi-Cubic Patches (from B-Splines) and Catmull-Rom Splines as they relate to the forthcoming Yost Skin IPAS routine, I thought I would jump in and post this little blurb regarding that subject FWIW: You can generally classify spline curves into 2 categories:…
#87260 Lighting Candlepower Message #87267
Hi Joe, You're welcome. It is a complex problem to *accurately* simulate lighting for evaluation purposes. Bill

Hi Nik, Yes, I finally was able to "see" the file area. Thanks for the comments. I've just be plauged – all of a sudden – with comm. problems galore, don't know why. Can't get either the Dvorak or CIS Navigators to work either. Everyone here has been super helpful…
#86966 GRIDS,etc. Message #86967
He**, don't put much stock in *ANYTHING* I say ! .
Lighting Candlepower Message #86959
Hi Joe, Besides the answers you've received and will receive (I'm sure), regarding light types, angles, etc., you might try working with the actual material definitions as well to "fake" more even, diffused light such as from an area light. However, I did architectural renderings for several years using 3D…
#86936 #GRIDS,etc. Message #86957
So why do I have so many problems with comm. s/w then ? I *can* use some s/w – sometimes. Bill
#86935 #FOG Message #86956
Didn't like my fog rectangles kludge, huh ? It actually worked pretty good —– HONESTLY !
#86947 #GRIDS,etc. Message #86950
Ah, you just gave away some interesting info on 3DS . I'd stay away from the Indy for 3D work though, from what I've seen. Look into the DEC ALPHA boxes if NT app's are developed that interest you, it's amazing – or Indigos of course. What's the deal with…

Thanks a million for the help and the offer of further assistance. I got called away just after speaking with you here and have not had a chance to experiment or call…..probably get a chance Sunday. I might take you up, and call then. THANKS AGAIN Bill

Hi John, Thanks a million for the sample. Unfortunately, I got called away shortly after we last spoke and have not had a chance for communications efforts since….probably try it out Sunday. (now that I've forgotten everything that I was attempting to learn about CsNav in the first place ).…
The only *major* difference I've noticed when using custom low compression is actually in areas of the image which have expanses of *CONSISTENT* color, as opposed to gradients or colors constantly changing from pixel-to-pixel. Think it's something to do with the way the algorithm "fools" your eye.
#86534 Missing Alpha Message #86931
I just wanted to second what Gary's saying and agree that 3DS alpha works just fine for me. I've used alpha channel manipulations for video as well as other app's for years. My recently uploaded image "RUBE.jpg" is a test mock-up frame from an animation I'm working on and used…
FWIW, I did some tests a while back with explode and motion blur applied to the .axp cube – and to my surprise, it worked just fine, although very slow. Thought I'd mention it.
#86918 #GRIDS,etc. Message #86926
Oh definitely these were just workaround suggestions, plus I've never tried the fog thing *with* 3DS as I am new to it as well. But, when I did it in the other program, you couldn't see the any giveaway. The rectangles were larger than the scene's volume of space though.…
#GRIDS,etc. Message #86912
PMJI, but I am just recently experimenting with 3DS myself. I've used both Alias & Lightwave in the past and I assume you are referring to the reference plane in this discussion: >> Since your taking wishes here, how about a user definable grid which rests on the 0 point…
#FOG Message #86900
Thanks a lot for the IPAS3 interactive description. PMJI to G. Teegarden's request/comments w/r/t fog: >>Actually Gary, what I mean is the ability for the fog to assume the colors of the backround. For instance, when we set up our scenes in LightWave, we create a gradient backround, and turn…

Hi Jonas, Cerainly sounds like they are up to some interesting stuff, that's for sure. I missed the last IPAS wishlist, I'm sorry to say. B/T/W, do you know if my Fish.zip & Rube.jpg uploads ever got straightened out? The last few days I've been plagued with comm. problems, and…

>>As Jonas said, our new flame.axp and vapor.axp particle systems are both being implemented with interactive IPAS3 features…… Hi Gary, Yes, I'm very interested & excited to see some of this stuff. Perhaps I'm late "arriving" on the 3DS scene or missed something, but could you or someone elaborate on…

Hi Gary, I was thinking about doing that if y'all don't mind. Gonna' take one more look myself though before disturbing anyone. Thanks, Bill
#86398 Whales Message #86445
B/T/W, I didn't develop *any* motion for that test – just threw the stuff together on hunches, and spent the rest of the time trying to figure out the memory useage puzzle, and trying to reduce the flic size by *REMOVING* things ! ….other than trying to get some fish…

Hi David, Thanks. I don't know if I'm going to go further with it or not. I just did that test based on A) Related stuff I read here B) To test the proj. lights, bubbles, & flock. Someday I've *got* to force myself to lay something from 3DS to…

Hi John, ….long story short. Found it (before reading this), d/l it (twice-problems) installed it. System disconnects immediately after logging in – "can't access service"….not even E-Mail. However, I can run terminal emulation which gets me on CIS, then take over manually ????? Tried all night. I HATE communications software/hardware…

In the past, and still today I've been kind of surprised that there has not been *more* procedural texture IPAS routines developed – a la the PIXAR & VALIS shaders for Renderman. I was just curious why this was so, and if any work is in progress ? Also, I…

Hi John, Now that I've got my CIS rates corrected, I took your advice and started looking for that navigator product. I happened to get the CSERVE magazine in the mail today, so I figured there would be info there on it / how to get it. I first saw…
#86277 Real 3D to 3DS Message #86301
They're dumping the program (I'm sure) as there are many problems *OTHER* than the modeler. As I said, it's great. Being able to *use* the program productively by exporting to 3DS would likely re-kindle current R3D owners interest – and potential owners or 3DS current owners couldn't help but love…
#86018 Real 3D to 3DS Message #86063
Thanks. Yes, it's another one of those love/hate stories. FANTASTIC modeler and interface though. If you know of anyone, convince them to write R3D->3DS converters. I'll bet there will be some money to be made as well, done properly.
#My Upload Message #85935
Did my fish.zip u/l come through? And did you get my message with the corrected file description ? Didn't see it in library, thought I'd ask. THANKS
Real 3D to 3DS Message #85929
Hi H.B., < Part 1 of 4 > With respect to your questions about Real 3D vs 3D Studio, here goes: >> I'm interested in your experiences with Real3D. Besides the modeller, what other areas impressed you or disappointed you? I-Plane ViewCam->IPlane Roll XYZ Hor.Lock Vert.Lock Reset HotPoint H/P Foward…
#85749 Whales Message #85922
Hi Jonas, Now it's just a simple test as I said, but encouraging and a *little* more interesting than my last u/l I screwed the file description up though, and E-Mailed J.Pike with the corrected text. If you get a chance I'd much appreciate it if you could check to…

#Whales Message #85719
Hi David, Well I'm finally uploading something now re: the underwater discussions we've had. It's just a 55 frame excerpt at 256×150, but is large enough to tell a little bit about my experiment with the projector lights to emulate refractive caustics on the dolphin body, the bubbles following the…

#85536 Real 3D to 3DS Message #85647
Hi H.B., Sorry, I read and responded briefly to your E-Mail before reading this message. I know quite a bit about Real 3D. Please see my E-Mail Reply and respond to my questions if you would. Let me compose an appropriate reply off-line after I get your next E-Mailed answers.…
#85533 Whales Message #85645

#85528 Whales Message #85640
Hi John, If you could just import the shaping object into the editor as an open loop (which is also your K/F path), I think it would solve the problem(s). Or if the routine could ignore selected vertices, yeah – that's the ticket Actually, their explanation of how to do…
#85571 SIGGRAPH Demo Reel Message #85638
Hi Greg, Thanks a lot for the response. Yes, that's about how I've summarized the machine. I would ONLY use it to dub to/from the AU-665, no SF recording, editing, etc.. I know the Luma & Chroma b/w is less than PVW/BVW (right?), but is it visible to "most" eyes…

Hi John, I think I need a macro for that question. M.G. are the initials for my given formal name. My parents nicknamed me Bill as I was born on the first of the month – get it ? How embarrasing Regards, Bill
