I would be interested in the Quicktime IPAS too. I use Premiere.
#Meshpaint
Message #189797
Kyle- I would like your recommendation about meshpaint. Is it worth it or should I stay with the traditional way of making maps in Corel and Photoshop. In other words, is it shortening your creation time? The reviews say it has a few rough edges still and a version 1.1…
#How's Russia doing?
Message #189706
Aleksey- Just wanted to say hi and ask you about Russia (I assume you are there and not some other state). How are things? Is the economy better? Are you and your friends working? The news about the former Soviet Union has become scarce here. A friend of mine went…
World Builder Upload
Message #189705
Anne- I uploaded an image I made with World Builder, Mountn.jpg, to the IPAS library and it didn't appear there or anywhere…what happened? This is the first time I have uploaded anything so maybe I did something wrong but the file transferred OK. Do you want me to put images…
Jefferey, No its not bogus. The price is the same. Tough it out! In this case I think the PVR board will be the standard for quite a while. Bye!
Sure! Jeff's E-mail address is: jtech@ix.netcom.com Tell him I sent you. Bye!
I'm going to upload some scenes over next week of so. Typical render times are taking 10-20 minutes per frame on a Pentium 100 (gag!) I'm now looking at WB as a stand alone product in its own right. You can do cool flics of just scenery. Later!
I've got a PAR board but now wish I had a PVR board for the simple reason that I can hang seven hard drives off the PVR but only two off the PAR. That would give me 56 gigs online instead of 3.4 gigs. The biggest PAR drive is the…
David, If you have not seen World Builder yet, please download the images. I got the program yesterday and while I screamed about the price, I now know it is well worth it. The control over the landscape, the plants, the water, and sky are superb! I got excellent results…
David, I want to conratulate you and the AnimaTek perople on World Builder! I think its a great program and the price is about right. I think most people are used to software and hardware prices falling (we paid $5000 for the first IBM PC) and for IPAS and other…
Call David Teachworth at (800) 854-4496. Have fun!
Robert, I'm sitting here with the Novajet III sales brochure and its 300 dpi for color, 600 for mono. I have (are you ready?) 8"X10" color and b&W film negatives…don't ask who I work for…and they produce super prints. I think the Novajet will be OK since the blowup will…
After working with Worldbuilder for only two hours I am truly amazed! A quantum leap over vistapro… Well worth the price!. Will post some scenes tomorrow!
Brendan- Just got copy #84 today (Tues 10AM) of Worldbuilder and have already generated a few incredible scenes! At least you can do simple scenes right out of the box without having to go through lengthy tutorials! Next stop… flics!
Hamid, The ones I use are Digital Video, 3D Artist, and Planet Studio which is subscription only. CGW (Computer Graphics World) is only OK. Planet Studio is the best as its dedicated to 3DS. Bye. 🙂
Dan, Call Digimation and get David's training tapes. Also order the Video Post tape. It really got me over the hurdle and made everthing come together. After viewing the tapes we kept say to ourselves "of course! how stupid! why didn't I think of that!". They are working on some…
Thanks for the info. We're not that sophisticated yet and I'm still doing research on all the print options. We have some Epsons and one Fargo. I would like to see some IRIS output. Read some things about it, thats all. Is it superior to the Phaser dye-sub output? Couldn't…
YES! I get that problem! Also, sometimes the transitions don't preview. Just see an "X". This is an ATI driver problem. Adobe and ATI are aware of it. And sometimes it just locks up! The ATI Mach64 card is a very popular card. You would think Adobe would do this…
Grahame, I haven't receiver my copy of WB but it should be here this week. Get people to post samples on the forum here so that it WON'T die. Its up to us users to make it worth while. When I get it I'll work on producing some decent output…
Chris, Go back and retrieve some the old messages (last two weeks) and look at the discussions we have been having on OpenGL, SGI Indigos, MAX, Multi-processor boards, etc. I think a lot of people are gearing up for MAX in a big way. I looking for either a DEC…
Robert I agree with you on the output question. Dye-sub is only an option. For us it was the only solution. For a ridiculous low price it was impossible NOT to buy the Fargo. We are going to get the Novajet later this year since we need the large output.…
Yeah, I hate when that happens. I left WFWG on the drive "just in case" . NT said to install itself in the same directory os regular windows "to share resources". Will let you know…
Ed, We got Win 95 for the regular office PCs on Thursday, the release day. We tested on 8 different PCs with a wide variety of hardware. To date only 1 out the 8 PCs we installed it on worked. The other 7 went back to Windows for Workgroups. You…
Dave, just read your note to Eron. I think for the next few months I'm going to keep WFWG and NT together. It took forever to get the memory set up for the Monterey, the network TCP/IP stack, maximum conventional mem, and so forth. I'm going to let the dust…
NT up and running
Message #188829
I'll do some research for you. I'm getting the 3.51 update this week. So far I love it, but I haven't installed all my drivers yet. Missing: Quicktime and a few others. What works correctly: AVI files, Adesk FLC files, ATI MACH 64 video, PowerBuilder ODBCs, TCP/IP stack for the…
Jim, Thanks! I have heard of the BBS but could never find it.
Did you delete WFWG first? if you did then that is your problem. They need to coexist and share resources. Also do you have 3.51 or 3.5? Let me know.
Thank you for the info. I had a feeling the cserve forum was the main point for 3DS people and that employers might be scouting this place out. Its not like you see ads in the paper for 3D artists. Wonder what the SGI/Alias people do? I'll begin to post…
#NT up and running
Message #188762
Dave, NT is a true 32-bit system. The 16-bit programs we all have now require some juggling by NT to run. When I put Photoshop 3.0.4 on NT it flew. But its a 32-bit program. The 16-bit programs are only a shade faster. I think your limitation on your speed…
Thanks for the info. As I come across dual Pentiums at good prices I'll let everyone know. I'm getting P100 motherboards and chips right now for around $400. They work fine as slaves for release 4. I just got NT loaded and am starting the OpenGL hunt and testing process.…
#Jobs from CIS referrals?
Message #188754
Kyle, got a question. I assume that you are doing 3DS professionally. I do it in-house but am ready to try some stuff in the big bad world out there. Are you getting referrals (or at least is it helping) by posting images here on cserve? Thanks.
Terry, I would like to know also. In fact I'll Jeff Teachworth at Digimation on Tuesday. Generating explosions is a little clumsy right now. Hope this will be better.
Yep, it does… but I always want more of everything…Just hate to miss out on the new stuff.
#Volume Lighting
Message #188722
Your volume lighting example is super! And of course I can't duplicate it! Would you post a note on how you did it? BTW, you must have been working with 3DS since the stone age. Everytime I see a neat shot it's got you name on it. How long did…
Dave, Just duplicate you groups and apps to NT. I talked to Microsoft and they said do it that way. There's no way to actually transfer or copy then to NT. Loaded in slicker than … whatever. Drivers were another story. I just identified each driver and reinstalled then to…
#Trinity BBS
Message #188719
Jim, I'm stupid. What BBS are you doing and how do I subscribe?
Also, standard uncompressed TGA output will fit on a floppy, about 1 meg. If you can, call Fargo in Eden Prairie, Minnesota (area code 612) and get then to send you some samples of the Primera Pro and the Pictura 310. The Pictura outputs 11X17. I think it will knock…
John, You just aren't going to get good output from any of the color laser printers or ink jet printers. I demoed a HP color laser printer and was disappointed. I've used HP 500s, 550s, and 560s and they're terrible. For home use I have a Epson stylus color for…
#MAX, OpenGL, Processors
Message #188706
Hi there, I've been in a hardware architecture dicussion for a week know with a variety of people here on the forum and wonder if I can get some items clarified before I lay out the big bucks for MAX hardware: 1. What processor should we use: Alpha, Mips, or…
Thats a good question that I hope the Autodesk people will help us find out (y'all jus jump here anytime). The knowledgeable people tell me that Renderman doesn't use OpenGL to help acceleration. So assuming (a dangerous thing) that the MAX render engine (Hoops thing) also is not OpenGL dependent,…
Thats all right, I probably should have known better. But I hadn't even seen an SGI before the demo and got excited. My buddy about had an orgasm when I told him about the SGI. So you can see where we come from… the wrong side of the tracks. Plus…
Thanks. I've got the catalog and will look it up.
Hi Dave, Whats Python? I hardly ever see IPASs except Digimations, Schreibers, and the other big-name stuff. Thanks
Whats Inferno? If its a flame routine I would be interested. Thanks.
So what we might be able to say at this point is: 1. Renderman is better than the 3DS render engine. (Is it available as a 3DS plugin?) 2. Renderman doesn't use OpenGL to assist in rendering. So the processor become paramount in this case. 3. MAX may or may…
Like I've said before, I'm the rookie here and just trying to learn (A year ago I didn't know whut a computer grafix artist wuz, now I are one…) type of thing. Plus I don't have access (yet) to the high-end stuff nor the experience of all of you have…
Its like drinking from a firehose. Still gotta learn Key Framer and World Builder without letting it interfere with productions. Not to mention gearing up for MAX and more hardware. Just got Win NT loaded. So much simpler than Novell! Bring on the Gladiators and the raytracing engines. I'm ready!…
Found the number and I will call on Friday.
Thanks for the help as I can see that I still have a lot to learn. At least I can talk about this stuff without putting my foot (both feet?) in my mouth. Question: We know that 3DS cannot do raytracing (except for shadows) in its present form without a…
While I have been working with computers for 20 years back to the dinosaur days of punch cards on a Univac, I have only been doing 3D Studio for a year. I still got lots to learn. Martin Foster of MetroLight has been kind enough to help me with some…
