In any case, I'm not sure exactly what Seagate did to make their drives work better with the PAR. I'm just assuming that they reporgrammed thermal recal and degauss cycles to preceed large block transfers. Evan
Chris: The main problem is not the thermal recalibration, it is the head degauss. Most drives have a degauss track. So they need to seek to it periodically to degauss. The Micropolis AV drives have a dedicated degauss sector on each track, so they don't have to seek to degauss.…

Steven: Yes, the Micron P60 is an ideal machine for 3DS. Micron is an Autodesk registered hardware developer, and uses 3DS in-house.

All disk drives which use thin film heads need to periodically run a degauss and recal cycle. It is possible to make these less visible for video use by modifying the drive's firmware. Both Seagate and Micropolis have done this on certain drives.
You might be interested to know that Chris, the fellow you're lecturing on graphics boards and drivers, is one of the handfull of programmers in this country who writes driver software for AutoCAD, 3D Studio, and Windows.
