#197168 ATI Pro Turbo/3DS4 Message #197183
Mark, I have/have used both the VLB and PCI versions (all 2 meg) at up to 76Hz with no problems. (Never tried higher refresh rates.) I've used 'em with NEC, Sony and CTX monitors and usually set Editor at 1024x768x256 and Materials Editor at 800x600x16.7M. One place that had Mirage,…

Rick, I apologise if I came across sounding rushed or huffy; that wasn't my intent. My only concern with creating a .prj was that fewer people may respond if they have to d/l something. Otherwise it's fine with me, and it will certainly ensure across-the-board consistency in our results. Want…
Kevin, Thanx; I learn something here practically every day… SCL

Sanford, It may be that at least one of the reasons for the demise of the LA group was their dues/fees. They probably had to charge to pay for the meeting space, but I seem to recall it was like $10 at the door for first-timers, or something like that,…
#196992 Lines in Editor Message #197042
Randy, About a year ago I had a similar-sounding problem — tracked it down to the '93 model Diamond Viper VLB I was using. Replaced the card and all was fine. BTW, that Diamond was replaced under warranty but never used since I'd bought another in the meantime. If you're…

#196977 #Benchmark standard Message #197040
Rick, Well, yes, Rick, but these are all controllable from within 3DS, (with the exception of antialiasing filter method, I just checked the docs… BTW, what is a Bartlett filter anyway, and how does it differ from the regular method?) so we can tell people what settings to use without…

; you _must_ have too much time on your hands! But does the beta for Alphas support delta compression of gamma? And don't forget that phone support is only $4.99 a minute, by calling 1-976-HOT-IPAS, as featured on late-nite TV near you. (Discreetly billed.) SCL
#196937 #Best Printer Message #196956
Bob, Seen the latest PC mag? (Nov. 7 issue) More than anyone ever could possibly have wanted to know about printers… They also liked the Tektronix 480X, but you're right, it needs special paper. SCL

Sanford, Oh, _that_ SoCal 3DS users' extravaganza… I thought maybe you were talking about something from Adesk. Actually, I have been talking to Bob Weil about the OC meeting. My only problem is it's a good hour's drive… Thanx, SCL
#196889 #Really registered? Message #196929
Mike, I just called cust serv 800-538-6401, as listed in the 3DSurfer announcement, but then again, Jonas may have a better number… SCL
#Really registered? Message #196871
Imagine my surprise when, after _thinking_ my R4 copy had been registered for the past year, I called Adesk to double-check and found that it WASN'T!!! Now, I border on the neurotic when it comes to registrations and such (proof is that I did call to check ), and I…

Lee, Go GRAPHVENA, and look for VRLI, Inc. Vistapro 3.1 is fairly closely integrated to 3DS. (Will export .dxfs, and texture maps.) SCL
#196823 Follow Funnies Message #196854
Dave, Oh. I recalled a case where deleting 'em all fixed a weirdness problem I was having. Maybe I really fixed something else to make it go away, and just thought starting over _after_ the paths/follow was what did it. Thanx for the clarification, though. SCL
#196795 #Benchmark standard Message #196853
Rick, Off the top of my head, the only render parameters in the .set file that might significantly affect render times and can't change from within 3DS are the render-band-width and the dithering algorithms, neither of which anyone is likely to mess with. (Course I could be wrong…) IMHO, to…

Sanford, PMJI, but what's this SoCal 3DS users' extravaganza? I'm in LA, and I hadn't heard anything… SCL
James, Sorry to tell you, but 4 megs o' RAM just won't cut it. With that little HD space available for swap files, 16 megs would be a realistic minimum. SCL
#Follow Funnies Message #196768
Donald, Another possibility is that your object transform is skewed from the world coordinates. Say, like if something came in from the lofter sideways and you had to rotate it to get it right-side-up, and hadn't done anything else to cause it to fix itself. Also, if the path you're…
#196721 #Benchmark standard Message #196767
Dave, One interesting facet of the no mem mgr setup is that the status pulldown also reports an additional half meg or so available to 3DS! (Sometimes that can make the difference between a swap file or not!) May I suggest that you post a concise set of parameters under…
#196710 # Help! SMP or RAM? Message #196758
Bob, Intel hasn't released Triton2 chipset yet… My info is 3rd-hand, someone (Mark Pippin, I think) quoting from an Infoworld article recently. You'll be able to tell when it's available — when they offer pipeline cache/EDO RAM on SMP systems. Sounds like a good meeting to have attended; I've been…

Dave, Chevy.3ds 640×480, all defaults (mapping on), Pixel Size 1.1, frames 0-14 (15 total), no display, no save. 486DX2/66, 32MB, 256K L2 cache, Hint G486HVL EISA mobo: _with_ QEMM 7.0: 1:14:58. No mem mgr; min config (all loads low; dos mem.exe shows 357K low dos avail.): 1:12:35. =143 sec improvement
#196604 Matrox Max 96MB Ram Message #196691
James, FWIW, I got best results from QEMM letting it do its own optimization, not allowing it to write over the Page Frame, and not allowing it to use Stealth. But then, I didn't have 96 megs to play with… Hope this helps anyway. SCL
#196664 # Help! SMP or RAM? Message #196690
Bob, Yeah, I'm waiting, too. If you're going for a dual machine, it's _doubly_ a good idea to wait until Triton2 chipset's reported bugs get worked out, so you can use pipeline cache. BTW, how'd your UG meeting go? I attended one about 2-1/2 years ago, but an hour each…

Rick, Got it; thanx. I'll u/l 15-frame times this eve, so y'all can see what suffering us 486 users must endure. SCL
#196436 #Benchmark standard Message #196529
Dave et al, I was just gonna try the 15-frame thing, and lo and behold, the last time I cleaned up my maps directory, I evidently accidentally deleted 3ds3text.jpg (foolish me; oughtta be more careful)! I'd hate to have to do a re-install just to get it back, which appears…

Mark, Have you tried keying the flare off luminance, and keying on the color channels of the lights themselves? Since it sounds like a regular cycle, you could even loop each light's keys, so you'd only have to do it once. SCL
#196436 Benchmark standard Message #196491
Dave, I'll go for it. SCL
Are you _sure_ that's the right guy, Tim? You'd better scroll through your File Cabinet and check _every_ message, to be absolutely certain!
#196279 #Benchmark standard Message #196360
Rick, Actually, I think it's gonna have to be long enough… (See related exchange w/ Greg P.) FWIW, a 50-sec. rendering will give us 2% accuracy, which is probably plenty good enough, and my Alpha estimates are probably close enough that a dual 300MHz box is still going to take…
#196206 Benchmark standard Message #196223
Greg, I see your problem with having to pull the maps across a net; only trouble with rendering multiple frames that I can see is that even a P133 is going to take more than half an hour to do ten frames at 1280; my poor old DX2/66 would take…
#196211 3DS Benchmark Message #196222

Nah, that was George S. But I think the S stood for Spam. SCL
#196089 #Benchmark standard Message #196130
Rick, What do you think we should do about the .PRJ? I'm thinking maybe selecting all, then shift-mirroring selected, and pulling the camera back and/or opening up FOV to get it all in… Probably won't quite double the time, but ought to add a couple of minutes, anyway… You've probably…
#196009 Benchmark standard Message #196129
Timothy, Doesn't bother me a bit to pass along our results, raw data or compiled — science knows no national boundaries, or whatever that quote was… Part of the reason why I've been rooting to get this done is precisely because the mainstream publications really don't address our particular interests…
#Benchmark standard Message #196038
Dave, If, and it's a big 'if,' my dual-Alpha estimations are fairly close guesswork, and if (assuming enough RAM) there's a direct, 1-to-1 correlation between resolution and rendering time (i.e. a 640×480 takes _exactly_ 4 times as long to render as a 320×240), then, extrapolated from posted times for P133s…

Anyone in L.A. area have any recommendations for a good monitor repairman/shop? Places to stay away from would be appreciated as well… Thanx in advance, SCL
#195870 Network/OS choice Message #195896
Bob, PMJI, but that un-trustworthy dealer of yours sounds a lot like one I ran into here in SoCal… I started to get suspicious when he was telling me how 3DS will only run properly on one of three (expensive) machines, and of course, he was also an authorized reseller…
#195865 Support for 3D Studio Message #195895
You don' need no stinkin' support!!! I have never seen a better-documented product. There are also several books readily available, and of course you've already found AMMEDIA. Take my advice, and use that grand to buy more RAM! SCL
#195782 #Benchmark standard Message #195891
Martin, You're right, I'd forgotten for the moment that rendering to NULL will keep it from defaulting to Render Display Size. Didn't know that Chevy.3DS was a "quasi-official" benchmark, though. Probably 1280×1024, Metal, Alpha on and a Pixel Size of 1.5 would give us a long-enough render time to be…
#195834 #Benchmark standard Message #195890
Rick, Somehow in my blurry, 4 a.m. mind, those two msgs got confused or rolled into one or something… You're right, I'd forgotten for the moment that rendering to NULL will keep it from defaulting to Render Display Size. Anyway, see my msg to Martin for a proposal for a…
