NETWORK RENDERING
Message #128944
Hi folks. I have a question regarding network rendering with 3DS3, and that is; do you need math co-processors in order to render on the additional machines? One of the environments I work in has about 15-20 PCs networked, but most of them don't have co-processors. Thanks for any help…
Thanks. I'll try that one out. I suppose one of the problems with modeling in 3DS is the fact that you have different ways of doing the same thing, and the simplest approach isn't always apparent, especially with low time on the software as I have. Thanks to all of…
Thanks for your reply. I'll check out the files to see what's there.
Thanks for your reply. I now remember why I stopped using 3DS!:D It's amazing what you have to go through sometimes just to make a simple object. Anyway, I'll try your suggestion, and see if I can come up with something useful. Thanks again for your reply.
#SIMPLE OBJECT (?)
Message #126170
Hi folks. I was trying to make a basic object the other day, and I got stumped. Not using this software for over a year, I can't remember if there's an easier way to do this. I was attempting to make an old '60's-style TV set, and immediately got stumped…
No, I haven't gotten back to him yet. Maybe this weekend. I'm going to suggest QEMM to him, as was suggested here. Other than more RAM, I don't know what he can do. Doesn't 3DS make virtual memory from the drive, or is that moot in this case? Thanks for…
Yeah, I was just getting a little annoyed that CIM kept distorting the message I was making, apparently because I was importing text from the different AUTOEXEC, and CONFIG files.
Can you suggest some modifications to his boot files, that may be of help. I guess he'll just have to deal with multiple boot files in order to roll with 3DS. Thanks.
Can you suggest an AUTOEXEC, and CONFIG file that he may use in his system when he runs 3DS? Also, are the changes made to his virtual "C" drive or his "D" drive, or both? Thanks.
I just want to add that CIM really sucks.
And here's the "D" DRIVE (TRUE C). [Note:CIM keeps dropping the first two letters from the previous AUTOEXEC. They are ] D DRIVE (TRUE C) echo off PROMPT $p$g c:\windows\smartdrv.exe PATH= C:\DOS;c:\windows;c:\util;c:\nu;c:\wp51;c:\ndw;c:\aldus;c:\pm4;c:\ ;C:\ADDSTOR;c:\mouse (Note:I put this here to fit this message) *lh MOUSE CENHANCE lh c:\mouse\mouse.com rem ******************************************************** rem loadhigh…
Apparently, CIM didn't like my message. Let's try that again. #3DS AND SUPERSTORE
Message #83449
Hi folks. a friend of mine purchased 3DS (V.2), and is having some problems with it. He uses SUSPERSTORE on-the-file compression on his system, and I told him this may be the problem. He also has some video capture and output cards, as well as a sound card, which may…
Someone here has mentioned getting version 2 thru an education channel for $395. What are the specifics of this?
Well, I think this book may be out of print, but, you may be able to find it at your local library. It's called "3D COMPUTER GRAPHICS – A USER'S GUIDE FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS", by Andrew S. Glassner, on Design Press, a division of TAB BOOKS. They have an…
#VERSION 2.0 SUPPORT
Message #67492
Someone's made an offer to sell me their V 2.0 of 3DS, essentially for the price of their upgade, which I feel is a decent price for this version. Will there still be support for earlier versions here (and this version needs all the support it can get!), or is…
Although I don't think they'll be as fast as a hard drive, the 2.5 inch disc size should yield faster times then you'll get from a 3.5 inch unit, and you can speed that up even more with one of the new CD ROM cache software packages. They use a…
As mass storage drives go, I mentioned in another forum how Sony is FINALLY going to release it's portable mass storage drives, based on it's MiniDisc technology. You may want to look into these units. The 2.5 inch MO's will have a 140 meg storage capacity, and the disks will…

TOPAS vs 3DS
Message #54563
Well, I'm glad to see that a potential new user can get a chance to see if Topas is good for them, or not.

TOPAS vs 3DS
Message #54407
Well, as I've said elsewhere, I suppose I'm the oddball here, and ultimately, everyone finds their place under the 3-D sun. Whatever works for an individual is what you're going to go with. I draw my experience with 3-D Studio from a class I took on it, to decide if…
Well, considering that the instructor in class, as well as some experienced students, agreed that they are bugs, I don't think it's user error. I'm not one to complain about something when there's nothing wrong.
As I've said in other messages here, you would do well for yourself to take a 3-D Studio course, if it's available where you live. This way, you can decide if it's going to be for you. If it isn't, it'll only cost you the course. If it is, you'll…
Well, As I've said elsewhere, I think the fellow asking for opinions seems to be approaching this from the point of an end user. Even if not, I don't compare 3-D Studio to $10,000 programs, I look at it as what it is. At it's price, I find it inexcusable…
Well, I sincerely hope v.3.0 attacks the shortcomings of this version. I don't consider HOLD undo. It's HOLD. If you're really caught up in what you're doing in the program, it's easy to forget to HOLD. If you mess up, it's all over. Other modeling programs have UNDO, there's no…
Paul, consider yourself quite lucky to not run into the bugs that I've run into, so far, with 3-D Studio. I'm constantly running into shape formation problems in the lofter, as well as problems with the boolean operations, two of the more useful tools in the program. I'm also constantly…
Well, as I said, 3-D Studio, in my opinion, is a royal pain to create things in. I find Topas far more intuitive. I work too hard in 3-D Studio just to make simple shapes. Hopefully, 3-D Studio will live up to it's image of a premier solid modeling program…
Although it's almost like comparing apples to oranges, some things that come immediately to my mind are that 3-D Studio has some interesting third-party support, which gives it a lot of versatility, but, Topas is an older program, and a LOT more stable. 3-D Studio is pretty bugged-out, and will…
See the suggestions I gave Steven C. Amos, in the message "3D soft. ADVICE needed", above. These should be right up your alley. Good luck!
Well, 3-D Studio would probably fill your needs, but, not for $800. For that kind of money, you COULD look into a combination of programs that will work together to give you a final image. I say this because you seem to have a CAD slant. AUTOCAD, however, will cost…
Well, it's a good excuse for a hike. That's all.
Real-3d (the Product)

I lost you, on what you're referring to.
A good definition of radiosity is found in the book "3D COMPUTER GRAPHICS -A USERS GUIDE FOR ARTISTS AND DESIGHNERS", Second Edition, by Andrew S. Glassner, on Design Press, distributed by TAB BOOKS. It's a little involved (radiosity), so, I won't go into it here. The book, however, is an…
Since when does one have radiosity available to them in 3DS?
Go to the Graphics Developer forum in the Graphics Forum, and download MRAY.ZIP, POVIBM.ZIP, POVSCN.ZIP, POVDOC.ZIP, POVPAN.ZIP, and, if you need to do keyframing, PV3DV1.ZIP. The combination of these programs will give you what you're looking for, and with the exception of MRAY, and PV3DV1, are all public domain. Your…
Not really. We recently incresed the memory in the machine to 64 megs, loaded a small (30meg) file into QFX 3, and it was still a slug.
Well, I hope Autodesk "gets on the case", and just does it. No more "just around the corner" talk, know what I mean?
3D Studio Classes??????
Message #50760
Well, if you live in the New York City area, Pratt is the place to go to for 3DS classes. I'm in the middle of one of them now. Decided to take it to see if 3DS is worth it or not. The jury's still out…
Yeah well, Rasterops, Supermac, what the hell. 🙂 As for the Targa/AT Vista, I don't like interlaced output, which is what I really meant by "bringing them into the modern age". I know that they're not interlaced for the video work, but, video work is not everything! Neither is 1024×768…
Last time I looked into that, it was bugged-out, and kept crashing. Otherwise, it seemed like an interesting alternative.
2-D 24-BIT ANIMATION
Message #50568
If it's artwork, not photos, why not just do the stuff on the P.C.? I think modern raster programs are capable of doing that kind of stuff. Vector programs, as well, can be of use, no?

D 24-BIT ANIMATION
Message #50567
Yeah, that's a drag, the 8-bit stuff. Hopefully, someone will come out with a 24-bit package. You never know, ANIMATOR may rise above it's "rinky dink" status it now has, by going 24-bit. I'm not holding my breath on that one, though. The AXA package, however, is interesting to me…

D 24-BIT ANIMATION
Message #50566
Well, I'm not sure, but, Truevision themselves may have some modern-day alternatives. Whether or not they're 24 bit is another question. I've seen a lot of lower-end stuff from them since they were sold to, I believe it was SuperMac. If the Targa and AT Vista cards were brought into…
Well, with the exception of Picture Publisher, I work with all of those packages, principally QFX. We recently upgraded to version 3, and immediately went back to version 2. Ron Scott has totally ruined his brainchild under pressure to be more "Windows-like". As for 2-D animation, my research has turned…
Not in 24-bit.
Hmmm…seems to me there's plenty of P.C.-Video activity going on in the P.C. world, like people such as Matrox.
Well, I actually don't have an attitude about P.C. based systems. As far as I'm concerned P.C.s are the only cost effective way to go. The comment about the Targa\Vista stuff comes from my daily experiences with it (I work in a digital imaging house, where, among other systems are…
Thanks for your reply. However, I've never been fond of Targa/Vista-based systems, so, this isn't really "up `my alley", so to speak. Thanks for your input, though.
Does it do 2-D animation in 24-bit color? If so, at what res? I"m taking a course over a Pratt in NYC on 3-D studio right now, and so far, I don't see anything that has to do with 2-D animation (actually, 3-D Studio so far does not impress me…
2-D 24-BIT ANIMATION
Message #49833
Hi folks. Does anyone know of any full-featured, professional P.C. 2-D (NOT 3-D) animation packages that will output in 24-bit color? I've seen a lot of animation packages (like Animator "Pro") out there, but, they're all rinky-dink computer presentation packages. I'd like to have a true, professional 2-D package, that…
It came out of the Targa manual.
